Pro drummers seem to approach drumming in a different way than the rest of us. But what is the secret to how they are so good at drumming? Is it the fact that they simply know more drum beats and drum fills than us? Or were they just born as drum gods? I've found that most pro drummers treat their everyday habits and practice much different than the rest of us...let's find out what these pro drummer habits are!

Well, I have to say that drumming helped me change my eating habits and finally take down the weight of my body (I have been overweight almost my entire life). I had done that just by saying to myself, 'If you could be disciplined about such things as drumming, why are you not serious enough about your own health and life expectancy? You should work on living longer in order to play those drums you are so vigorously learning to play!' I confirm that discipline can help you in so many ways, and I took drumming habits the other way around, out in the real world!
And I am 50 (third year of learning to play drums). Thank you, kind sir, for all your videos, lessons, positivity, and help you provided without knowing it - until now! 😊❤

I’ve been drumming for over 60 years. Still learning, still practicing, still listening to good advice, still playing shows with 2 different bands. Gabe’s advice is so true. Everything he talked about helps me get better.

Quite interesting making the parallels between the day to day routine and getting more well-versed with the drumset. Intention and commitment are vital to getting better at anything, in my humble opinion!

Such an inspiring video! Lucky for me DBO Academy helps me to streamline my practice and makes me a better drummer every day! The community there is incredible as well and it feels amazing to connect with other drummers to learn from and support each other. Cheers to my DBO Fam!!💜🤘You made me realize in the #7 one of the things I like doing besides of drumming is making jewelry , easy to see now the similarity with choosing colors shapes and textures (sticking patterns, grooves and fills) and putting them together to create something beautiful! As always Gabe hits home with his contagious positivity and keeps us motivated, thank you for all you do! You're amazing! Cheers

One of my biggest inspirations is Gene Hoglan , especially his Death era. I love how Death being a death metal band still have these very unique and melodic drum lines. Another inspiration is KAI from The GazettE , especially his passion and attitude towards drumming.I'm also a big fan of Nick Menza , Aquiles Priester.

Massive humbleness and always learning. I follow Dany Carey, Carter Beauford, Dennis Chambers, and Thomas Lang to name a few. I focus on crafting and creating unique sounds, practicing genres, and be willing to fail as a way to learn a chop or timing didn’t work and to find the way to make it work then work better then work differently.

I’ve dabbled in drums since I was a teenager, in my 30s now, and this lesson is what I needed since I plan to be pro level good.
I have 3 major drum influences in chronological order.
YUKOHIRO of L’ Arc~en~Ciel his ability to riff and actually use a massive drum kit to its fullest potential still blows my mind . He was at the forefront pop metal drumming. I think he’s untouchable in this regard.
Jon Theodore of Golden, The Mars Volta, Queens Of The Stone Age, One Day As A Lion, Utada Hikaru is the only one I’ve seen live. I’ve seen him so many time I lost count years ago. His drum parts only sound right when he plays them. His dynamic range is subtle but one of kind. His ethnic polyrhythms have still not been copied in any mainstream way. I want to study Afrobeat because of him.
Anika Nilles is my favorite. Words don’t do justice to how much of a GOD on drums she is even in songs where she focuses more on backing the band. She’s immaculate, faster than light and pushing technical drumming to a place no one has throughly explored yet. The biggest reason she’s my favorite is no one can copy her style because she’s still very publicly developing it.
My five year goal is to combine my favorite aspects of all three listed drummers and create something only I can.
    Thanks for the lessons!

I have a hard time with practicing what I'm not good at. I will warm up with playing whatever and then switching to practice but after a while I can get discouraged and go back to playing whatever making most of my practice what I already know.
I should dig in more like that point said and keep in with it even if it takes longer to get it to start sounding better.

While this is good in theory, in reality most pros don’t really practice much or at all because they are playing all the time and there is just no or very little time to practice! I went to Thomas Langs boot camp in Nashville a while back and I asked him about practice. He told me he barely practices and when he does it’s only song oriented not technique groove development etc. Many pther big name guys have said the same thing. As a pro, For me I try to get some wood shedding in as time allows but I’ve learned to really focus and no wanking, lol 😂
