As a fairly experienced drummer, my tip for beginners is to try open hand drumming. Open hand basically means that you play the hi-hat with the left hand and the snare with the right. And also if you have a crash on the left side use that with your left hand as well. Getting used to open hand drumming can vastly increase your left hand’s independence and when playing fast your left hand will probably be next to something that you want to hit. An exercise I recommend for this is to try playing a standard 4/6 time signature beat on the hi-hat with the snare on the 4th beat and bass on the first, and play this entire thing with only your left hand. This will not only increase the amount your left hand can do (which can be helpful down the line for faster fills) it can also strengthen your left hand considerably, making your weak hand a very capable tool at your disposal. Also remember if you struggle with this, as this dude said, slow it down, then once you get the hang of it, slowly speed up.
I'm left-handed and did this from the start. It's so much easier to do fills and stuff!

i'm a left handed person but i just played right handed but i wanna try to play open handed cus it might be better for me
I'm left handed but want to play the bass drum with my right foot. It makes setting up the kit awkward lol
I'm right handed, but I do this! I didn't know that it had a term, open-handed. I sometimes have trouble keeping my right hand from following the pattern of the kick drum, but the left has no such problem, so I often use my left hand for when I need a slower, steady rhythm.
I would also like to weigh in on the heel up vs. down thing: It has always come naturally to me to play heel up. Some years into my training as a drummer, I started noticing some people do heel down and I actually got the impression at a certain point that it's the opposite: down is good, up is bad. But I had already developed my technique so much with heel up I said "well I guess I'm going to be doing it 'wrong' for the rest of my life because I can't go back now." When I got to the point in the video where you said heel up is good, heel down is bad, I about jumped out of my chair! Then I did some research and I agree with others who posted saying "it depends on genre" and "it's not all about speed." And, as of such, when I finally make the leap into Jazz drumming, I'm always going to go heel down.
I feel like the heel up or heel down motion on your kick pedal should be based on what kind of music you play. For instance, when playing jazz you would rather play with heel down than heel up, because with heel down you can play much more consistent and silent on the basdrum what you really want for jazz. But when playing rock or such you should play with heel up like tou said so it's much more louder. Nice video dude
I had a metamorphosis in my drumming over the past 2 years. I spent a year grinding hours of practice a day all alone during the pandemic in preparation to gig. Playing with new musicians for the first time was intimidating and challenging but after a year of gigging and jamming I’ve developed soooo much comfort, confidence, and creativity where I can write effortlessly when working with new artists.
While the year of solitary practice allowed me to hone physical skills like doubles on kick and stick control/chops, performing and socializing has completely upped my mental game.

Interesting to hear you say that most drummers do not start off playing with songs, because that's how I literally began. I wanted to play what I heard, and I still want to play what I hear. On a FFDP kick rn 🤘
a song i really like to play on drums (even tho it's basic) is "smells like teen spirit" it has fast parts and slow parts so it's diverse and will be good practice for most drumming. if you're a beginner you should try it but don't feel pressured to play it exactly like dave grohl tho😂

My only critique is that you talk about the heel-down kick drum technique as if it is inherently bad and hinders playing. It has its place in drumming, and I would argue that a proficiency in heel-down and its applications is just as important as heel-up.

I had a really tough time playing drums a few years back, i was unmotivated to play, didn't find it fun, didn't want to go to lessons or anything like that. Nowadays I'm really thankful i didn't quit because drumming has become so much more fun and i really just thank myself for not quitting drums.

I'm not sure if it's too fast, but I've been playing for literally a week, and I've already started incorporating songs to play along too, and most importantly I record it. Trust me when you listen back you'll hear what you need to work on but also you'll see what you've started to get good at and it'll help encourage you. Keep drumming my brothas!!!

Honestly, just put some jams on and go, I played in high school percussion through college but nothing had a bigger impact than listening to music and jamming along. Different genres, styles and tempos, the more diverse the better. Carter Beauford was a game changer, right-handed players forcing the open hand really opens doors!

You're right! You always should play a beat er song like you really mean it but that doesn't mean you need to play it overload. I feel like lot of drummers like to play really hard and than they play a gig in a restaurant or coffeeshop or something and they play overload and the people start to leave. Also it can be very annoying when you rehearse in a smal room with a drummer that plays way to load. So I think a drummer should also learn to play silently on the kit. To me it shows you have control over your kit, your sound, your body and it shows skill.
How do you feel about using a electronic kit with clone hero to help familiarize yourself with using/ getting more comfortable on a kit and having the fun of playing with songs and keeping up with bpm but also taking the time to practice by itself and using a metronome. Obv everyone learns differently, but being new to drumming, i dont want to pick up hard to break habits.
To anyone thinking about joining DBO academy i would highly recommend it. I got the lifetime membership its been such an awesome tool for progressing fast behind the drums.

I ask every drumming channel I come across this question if I watch more than 1 video, do you have any tips for a broke drummer to practice double bass without access to a pair of bass pedals? the floor doesn't give the same kind of feedback and I feel when I'm air drumming to a song that I raise my foot/leg too high the last time I have even sat behind a kit was when my friends and I tried to start a band about 9 years ago
Consistent practice is better than the occasional hours long marathon. Sometimes I find I just can't get something down one day, while something else just clicks and feels easy. Then the next day, the difficult thing feels easy but that easy thing just isn't working. But over time, they'll come together

steady progress is allmost impossible. its more like reaching a plateau than u stay there and after a while the learning curve will go up again. learn to enjoy the plateau and dont give up!
