Let’s not forget the Steel alternatives for those who are interested- the Fairlight Secan and Faran are excellent options, as is Temple Cycles Adventure Disc models, Brother Cycles Mehteh and Kepler, and Ribble Cycles Gravel 725, and CGR 725.
Lauf Seigla is an obvious missing entry here. For $3000 USD you get Apex wireless shifting, progressive geometry carbon frame, UDH for future upgradability, and suspension. For $3500 (still in this video's budget) you jump up to Rival and get a power meter. Rigid fork options for even cheaper. Best value for money out there in my book,
I’ve got the Revolt Advanced Pro from a couple years ago with the grx di2 and it’s an excellent bike. Also makes a pretty good road bike as it’s not far off my Defy when on the road. Doesn’t feel as fast but according to strava the times are pretty much the same or better in some instances.
I will most likely buy the Revolt Advanced 0 for my first gravel bike with another set of Carbon wheels and 28 cm tires to use for road rides. Would you please give more detail of what makes this a great bike for you. Specific feedback on what type of off road conditions it performs well on, gravel, smooth single track, chunkier conditions, ect... Thanks
Buy the cheapest bike you can find with 45mm clearance and a hydraulic grx groupset. Spend the rest on upgrading tires, wheels, saddle and camping stuff so you can go on adventures. And keep a bit aside for repairs because stuff gets broken/ wears out quicker off road. Thank me later xx
I run both 2x11 and 1x11 and the gearing is fine. Currently running 1x 40x11//32 cassette in road set up and gearing is fine. It is not gears that get you up hill but your fitness. @@MysticMac000
I'm not a big fan of carbon. I've been riding Cannondale Topstone 0 (Topstone Alloy) for the past two seasons. It's a perfect gravel bike at a good price and in a gorgeous colour - Champagne, which is very nice for ladies.
Still not cheap but for the quality and parts its good value and not 5k and above or 10k. Sometimes i ask myself if those bike brands due pay their employes 50-100k a year so they can afford their uber expensive bikes .. But sadly they dont pay very well ... Thx for the nice video , cheers ...
Awesome channel David - I've been trying to decide between a Giant Revolt Advanced 0 and a Canyon Grail CF SL 7. I'm a roadie mostly, however looking to get into some gravel trails. Which would you recommend?
Lordy, lordy!!.....A "no brainer entry level choice..." @ $3300.00 !! Is this just a sign that "enthusiast" cyclists are just cash-flush dilettantes or is a bottle of water now $100 & I'm just Rip Van Winkle?
Inflation, buddy. Read up about it. Your government is printing money at an astounding rate. And your £s/$s are devaluing quickly. Meaning your wages should be keeping up at the same rate. And if they’re not, it’s something you should take your own responsibility for. Good luck. This isn’t a criticism of your comment. It’s just your comment popped up at the top, made me laugh, and I had to reply.
Seems good price - I bought for ca 2000-2100 (I paid in other currency so price is diifferent every day) Kellys Soot 90, a little upgraded and I like it very much. Cannondale at this price had aluminum frame so you did good deal.
I have an old Cannondale with the Ultra Fatty Headshok and it would ride similar to the Rockshok cartridge I imagine. It smooths out chatter and can take bigger shocks. The Redshift stem I also have on another bike and the dampening is there but it’s different because it’s a pivoting action rather than a vertical piston action. For dealing with chatter both systems are good. It’s too bad the VCLS isn’t offered with the Rudy fork in the Canyon. I have a VCLS seatpost as well on the Cannondale and you really need as much of it exposed as possible to get benefit so shorter seat tubes are in order if you want one because they aren’t cheap.
@@alexk2791 I heard that too. The Redshift I think is designed from “looks like a regular stem “ first, action second. The main selling feature other than that is a solid bearing system and elastomers that can be tuned.
Hello David! Why u didnt consider to put Rose Backroad on the list ? I'am jus curious because currently i am struggeling between Backroad - Grizl - Revolt. Can you share your opinion about Backroad ? Many thanks!
Totally agree. I got a The Advanced Pro 0 with Sram Force AXS second hand for a good price. Fantastic bike, awesome off road and good on the road. Can use as a endurance bike with road specific wheels. With the bonus of using it as a gravel bike if you want to. Better option in my opinion to the Giant Defy.
@@deanf2259hi Dean. Im looking at this now (blackcurrant coloured one). Torn between it and the new SL8 roubaix (apex 1 by version). Is the revolt advanced pro as good as people say?

@@MysticMac000 what’s colour got to do with what I said 🤦♂️ road bikes are basically being made into mountain bikes from years ago with suspension and heavier weight etc and not as good on rough decent off road tracks. It’s all marketing and it’s working.
You know, I was riding some fairly rough double track recently, and I was thinking to myself as I was bumping along, I should stick the lauf fork back on this bike if I keep riding here. Maybe I could go full on xc mtb, thought about it plenty of times, but right now, 48ish mm tires, flared bars and high engagement hub has me gunning down rough rail trail and jeep track. Plenty fun w/out sus, more comfortable with just a little sus. Nothing to get upset about, imo.
@@paulwilliams4990mountain bikes from years ago were converted road bikes. Modern gravel bikes are like a 90s mtb but faster thanks to 700c wheels, no dropped chains thanks to clutch rearmechs and far superior brakes .
No - it is simply another option - for some riders very useful but as always it is compromise -such bike will be slower on smooth roads. I rather use gravel on smooth roads so I mounted 32 slicks to be faster (but still not as fast as typical road bike co compromise again) . For terrain I prefer full MTB - even electrified for mountain tracks.
From where I live, it's hard to get Lauf without paying a large delivery fee or finding a place to test drive. But they look amazing and grit suspension is brilliant.
Lauf and Ribble need to be in the conversation. Both offer huge value for money.

Also, if you can find one is the Scott Addict Gravel 20. A Brilliant performance Gravel bike with Rival AXS.
Would be great to have same kind of videos on carbon wheels, as it's usually the next big upgrade after you bought your first bike.
There have been some cracking issues on the seat tube on the Giant Revolt. There is a reddit about it.

The giant revolts were brilliant up until the latest models, where they stuck a bloody wedge In at the seatpost which is cracking their frames .
Did this happen on your bike. Did you reach out to Giant? If so, what was their reply?

Rose Backroad. With GRX 810 for 2600£ and the 810 Di2 version for 3100£.
