    In this tutorial you can learn how to create the famous 'mask effect' from the Mission: Impossible films using two people, a cheap rubber / latex mask and Adobe After Effects!
    Watch the updated version of this effect here:
    • Mission Impossible MAS...
    I walk though how I've updated the effect using better techniques (in this version the whole person's body transforms, not just the face and we use the after effects puppet tool, not the mesh warp.) The process is based on the idea of shooting both subjects in front of a blue or green screen, timing the movements to match, and then overlaying a series of keyframed layers to blend the face into the rubber mask and matching the movements using the puppet tool. Filmmakers, give it a go! Much more fun than a Tom Cruise deepfake!

    Very interesting and we now realize it takes much work, layers and imagination to pull off a couple of seconds of a mask scene. Thank you.

    I rewatched the original scenes and noticed they have some little tricks to make the transition easier:
    1. The mask they use has hair matching the person's hair
    2. They use something to cover the original person face during the transition, sometimes hair, sometimes the elbow, most of the time they use the inverse side of the mask
    So overall you did a really good job.

    • @SteveRamsdenYoutube
      @SteveRamsdenYoutube  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks, yes it would definitely work better with a mask with hair. Also I can never tell if they have tracking markers on the mask as well, or if they would simply get in the way. I'll probably try this effect again when the next MI movie comes out, so I might refine it a bit before then!

      the body transitions too which distracts from the effect. I mean great work, and fucking AMAZING shot on a Fs7 in a small spot, but if I were to nitpick to perfection, that would be my only complaint. Otherwise a better mask pull than the first!

    I so wish actors; Martin Landau and Leonard Nimoy from the original series were still alive to see this excellent doc on the visual effects used for the Mission: Impossible films today. Since they were the masters of disguise for the original TV series. As they played; Roland Hand and Paris respectively in the original show. R.I.P. as it seems Tom Cruise continues that legacy in the current movies. And Unexplored films now continues that legacy as well too. (smiles) 😀

    Steve, I was thinking of trying this effect this month for a friends birthday using my son has a younger person. Is there a reason why you chose a blue screen, even considering you have blue eyes? I was just wondering if the camera handled the blue screen better in this case. I can use any option.

    • @SteveRamsdenYoutube

      Good question, I tried blue for this version as I thought it might produce less spill around the dark clothing, but I forgot about the eyes! 😂Next time I try it (probably this year) I will likely go for green. Hope it goes well

      @@SteveRamsdenTH-cam , Hi Steve, thank you for the reply. I’ve always enjoyed your work and love following your channel. I have a friend in Idaho that has a wine shop. I was helping her with some weekly videos in 2020. I live in Oregon so it was a bit of a challenge there as well. She was sending me video from her camera and I did the editing from there with intros and Outros and my sense of humor built in. Anyway, we started doing some green screen work which was kind of a nightmare, because they never lit the scene or they wore the wrong clothes. Most of my work is on the cheesy side, admittedly, but here is an example of trying to work with black on green that is not lit. You should look at the Christmas special where we had green on green. LOL!
      You don’t have to watch but it might make you laugh.

      I didn't do it all in one go, but I think the whole effect probably took at least two full days of editing. But I think I tried a few failed experiments first, so call it 2-3 days. If I had to do it again from scratch then I might be able to cut down the time!

    • @SteveRamsdenYoutube
      @SteveRamsdenYoutube  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both green and blue are useful. It depends on several things like how bright your subject is, hair colour, what background you will add, etc. For brighter hair colours, blue is better as it is more of a contrast than green. It is also better if you are going to be adding a dark background as it makes the edges easier to disguise. A green background would give you more difficult (bright) edges to fix if you're going to be adding a really dark background. Plus we just wanted to experiment with blue haha!
