One huge factor in rear and mid mount turbos is the turbo oil system. Which of course can be avoided buying an oil less turbo which you have to change the grease out every couple thousand miles and that grease is pricy as well, but if you use a turbo that requires oil, maybe a 300-600 dollar one, you'd have to run long oil lines, one to feed the turbo some oil, and one to drain the oil from the turbo to the block and use a scavenge pump to push the oil back up to the oil pan, and use check valves to avoid the turbo smoking on start up and little details and such. That's another con that can be avoided by buying an oil less turbo that runs over 1k, some 2k, which the cost of the turbo is a con on its own. Being as my entire turbonetics/custom pieced together fabbed kit cost me about $1600 without supporting mods like gauges, fueling, radiator and oil cooler, luckily since it's top mount, it's just gravity drained, but I have experience with low and mid mounts as well. Looking at building a rear mount when I build my 383 big block mopar. Should be building 400+lbs of torque off the line anyway so I don't think I will care about turbo lag
A single exhaust wouldv'e been less materials/welding and less heat loss, though maybe you didn't have room for a larger diameter pipe? Have you considered wrapping the exhaust to keep heat in? And for those of us with a bit more room under there, an air-to-water intercooler under the back seat floor would reduce travel (not to mention increase the stealthiness).
The original design was to accommodate a second turbo but that plan has changed. Knowing what I do now a single setup would be more efficient for sure! I just buttoned up this build yesterday and it hit a HUGE number I didn't expect 😅 video is being worked on now. Also the piping will be getting wrapped!
True if you can look under my hood, there is no space whatsoever to fit any sort of Turbocharger. It’s just full of engine Also you can hide your turbocharger so your car doesn’t look turbo’s in anyway
Dude thats rad! Idk if your subbed or not but I'd love to have a group of Australians filling the channel! It's a bucket list destination and I hear the car scene is pretty awesome!
All you have to do is make a turbo box. I know you don’t understand what it is but think about it for a few minutes and you’ll make one and I’ll be the fastest and you won’t have any lag.
One of the thing is with the long pipes , is when you shift. You do not have as much pressure drop inbetween . So the initial spool lag is a very small price to pay , for keeping the boost up between shifts. The rear mount allso is less harsh on your turbo as it won't get as hot. However i would still say that on a car that allready sits low.. that can be a problem. Now , depending on the car , if its say.. a 4 jugger, I would rather look for 2 small turbo Than a large one. Cyl 1 and 2 , and 2and 4 paired. The long tubes will even out the pressure waves a lot better. Than with the small turbos you can mount them higher. Many Times its cheaper to aim for a pair of smaller turbos Than a large single unit. And many Times small turbos can get a lot higher boost. Potentially you can even regain the initial spool lag , while enjoying the benefit of the less spool loss between shifts. With the 2 small turbo approach you may verry well not need the intercooler. Saves space. Allso you can crossfeed , the turbo that gets exhaust of cyl 1 and 2 , can boost cyl 3 and 4. Its far less complicated to make a manifold with proper dimensions thatway. Volumetric efficiency can and does varry between cylinders , if you flowbech a head , you will see the deviation can be up 10% or even more. This helps resolving that issue , and while you will have less peak power , you will have a better curve. From performance stand point peak values mean nothing. Power under the curve is indeed what tells the story.

Well anything is possible! But I knew little about that platform so I think your best bet is to join a few Facebook groups and ask LOTS of questions. Tuning capabilities, supporting mods like fuel injection and cooling solutions. Once you have enough info find a local fabricator to help design and build the system. And last you will need to find a tuner to tune the car. It's a long road but worth it! Now if that is to much at this point I'd say start with a good set of coilovers a nice set of wheels and some sticky tires! You will see and feel a huge difference in performance

To be honest I really don't care too much about turbo lag in fact I think it's kind of fun waiting for boost to hit then feeling it start to floor you into the seat, however the reason I'm watching this video is because I've had a really bold idea in my head that I have to do now which is cutting into my trunk in my Miata and making a turbo that pokes out the trunk facing forwards with two entrys leading to the front side of the trunk almost by the doors, too crazy of an idea? Cause I'm kind of obsessed with the thought now

Check out Nugget Garage. His Supra has a setup that’s unbelievable. Biggest issue people run into. Now a days there is no reason to lower compression. Especially with the tuning of these systems we have now. People using far too large an exhaust pipe diameter. People also not wrapping the system to contain thermal energy. The lag. Think of it as perfect traction control.
I get really frustrated when I see people modding their cars because I want to, but all I have is my one car and can't risk breaking it. Almost like I can see it, but it's still just out of reach
This build has been going on for almost 10 years now. Don't put yourself down, just chip away at it part by part. Whenever you get a bonus or maybe when you get tax returns or something like that snap up a couple of parts. Also prices on cars are coming down so maybe your dream car will become attainable. Keep your head up buddy! It takes a while for most of us
I realize this is an old video but one con you missed is having to integrate a return oil pump because it can't gravity feed the return oil back into the oil pan all the way from the back of the car & sitting that low. I've always been fascinated with rear mount & mid mount setups. I plan on doing mid mount twin 70's hanging off the back of long tube headers on my 77 Chevy K10
I mean I don't think that's really a con. It's just a part of the system. Something that's necessary, just like an intercooler or bigger injectors. That's why I didn't really put it on the list, but that k10 sounds like it's going to be awesome!

Also thought about cutting a hole in my spare tire well in the trunk for the filter. Use naca ducts to feed it.
Screw what other people say. Rear mounts are funny as hell! I'm backing you.
Thanks for the info! I’m planning on going boost this summer too and was thinking about doing a rear mount
hope this helps! ill be making more info videos soon on the build as winter has come and the car will be going away.
Watching now. From 1000 subs to 22k , nice.
@@EmilAlexandru it's been a journey and we are still growing!
2013 express 2500. Doing a mid undermount in place of the third cat. Welding in a T4 flange right under the side cargo door. Tons of space between the frame and drive shaft. Should be very inconspicuous.
Nice! U doin this ona big Chevy Express van? I like em alot, they roll real smooth and solid.. like the big elephant coming lol
Im interested in doin a mid mount on my 94 Plymouth voyager 3.3 shorty van.
Its stock now, with 20" 2022 Dodge Challenger wheels on it.
@@koollee may as well. Those old voyagers we're awesome. I had an 88 we called the brown bomb in high school. I killed it when I jumped it over a set of railroad tracks back in March of 1997. Yes I am doing a cargo van. Came with 799 heads and a 6L90 trans so she is already begging for it.
awesome video. - agree being exclusive, i have had mine 4 years now and never seen another one in South Africa
I have been to South africa!!!
1: lag is highly subjective - personally mine comes in around 3300 rpm and goes through to 8000 , when I change gears its in the band continuously. dont see how that's a bad thing?
Looking at building a rear mount when I build my 383 big block mopar. Should be building 400+lbs of torque off the line anyway so I don't think I will care about turbo lag
Im thinking of doing rear mounted turbos on my c4 this was a great introduction for me learning the ins and outs of my soon to be build c:
Absolutly recommend it!
Check out the rest of my videos! My current set up almost hit 600 whp
You gotta move that clock behind ya, it blends with your hair and makes ya look funny. Like a cartoon haircut :) Also, thank you, super cool topic.
Haha thanks! I have sense moved and set up a new location!
I have rear mounted twins in a G.cherokee srt8 2012 and it hits boost at 3k rpm and its like you said "when the boost hits it hist strong"
So bad ass! But yeah it's just regular driving till you need the sauce
It’s just full of engine
Also you can hide your turbocharger so your car doesn’t look turbo’s in anyway
Thanks mate from South Australia
Power under the curve is indeed what tells the story.
i dont like 350s that much but i enjoy your narrative and im trying to remote mount my 2nd gen acura tl stock motor. for the same reason as you, i enjoy unique things about cars. im excited for whats to come for this z and my tl
(yours will %100 be faster lol, i just wanna beat stock c5's)
Haha thanks man! Sounds like you are on the right track!
Turbo setup on an Acura RL ka9 I would love to see this
same here!
Just built a rear mount turbo system on my Porsche 928 ( the V8 Porsche ) There is ZERO room for it under the hood so rear is the way to go.
That's awesome! Is the car back on the road or still under construction?
@@blackpearlmedia7797 Its almost there. I had to change to a stand alone because the stock ecu is not tunable. So many wires and I haven't got a clue where they all go so It is as of last week. ( November 5th 2022 ) it is in the shop getting wired up by a pro

I wonder if the back pressure is lower with a rear mount so you could run a larger cam.
Hmm not sure 🤔
Con's were definitely items I have thought about already. Im still intrigued with doing this on my '06 V6 Eclipse..🤔🤫
Doooo ittttt
I like how your cons turn into pros lol

Can this be run on an mqb platform? Mk7 gti or R would be unstoppable with a twin turbo setup , is20 or is38 up front and a big ole ar70 at the rear .
I'm not sure but probably!
So do you have to run a pump to supply oil?
Yup! Scavenge pump!:)

On my rear mount c5 corvette would 250f oil return line work or will oil get hotter it has 2feet of an line first then into the line I speak of
This would be a good question to ask an actual mechanic as I am not one! In my mind it doesn't sound like much of an issue. But I would definitely suggest an oil cooler in either case
Nice video bro and the quality looks great 👍🏽
Ayyy thanks! I put a little more effort into the lighting and audio haha
Wow you have a mature audience. Surprised there aren't "put it in the rear" comments 🤣. Good info man.
Subbed and liked my fellow CT brother 👌
Appreciate it man! Yeah I'm surprised haha
I watched a video dyno testing different pipe lengths The result was that length of the exhaust to the turbo does effect lag somewhat BUT the length of the charge pipe does not increase lag any significant amount I'm sure if it was 100 feet long it would but 15 feet or so have so little effect it is not worth thinking about
Great job! Almost to 10k!👍🍺
Thank you! Getting there :)
I want to do this on my 2002 civic
I'd love to do this with a VQ35 Elgrand
Great video bro, subbed. I’m considering doing this on my G35 I think this is the route I’m going to take for sure

Hey sir new subscriber here. Just trying to see if i can do rear mount exhaust to my 2000 Toyota Camry 3.0 V6. I couldn’t see or find any exhaust manifold that is already build so idk if this is the best for my car. Plus i have an idea where i can change the car from stock pipe then to another exhaust with turbo 😊. I would like to have my car to be a project can then it will be a unique in some way, That a family car\sedan can be a beast. Please let me know if this is possible. Thank you 🙏🏽
Problem I’m thinking rn is snow and rain. A good rubber cover will be great
Well anything is possible!
A snorkel on the turbo inlet would solve the water problems, right?
I live in a flood prone area, so this rear mount idea might be about to get the can from me.. lol
Thankfully I watched this vid. Thanks ;)
Haha everyone's situation is different! Around here heavy rain and flooding are easy enough to avoid but it may not be that way for everyone. I'm glad it helped!
“Really cool spool inside the car”
*shows dyno clip* 😂
If you get water in it itll probably blow the turbo up before it touches the engine
nah driven plenty in heavy rain and have had zero issues

Seems like a grat idea to add cheap top end to my 370z, my car seem to beat v8's 1/4 mile but from a roll of 75mph they eat my Z
I gave you a like just for acknowledging the straight piped VQ not sounding good.
I’ve got a Mark VIII and there is nobody in the community after 28 years that has found a way to mount a turbo near the engine. Rear mount seems to be the way

Thanks for content, im wrinting from poland. Here rear mount turbo ist popular. Turbocharge modifications are very popular, but it is just in the front of the car. Great posibility for me also to learn english from u in the enjoyment way ! ( i have toyota yaris 1.5 106 HP. Very nice car, considering weight of the car its very fast. I woud like to make turbo to this car. Rear mount turbo sounds amazing ! i ii go that way parhapse. )
Greetings from the USA! Rear mounts have a ton of benefits and are super fun to drive! You have to do a little designing on your own but that's the fun in the challenge!
It's a mess but it does fix a lot off reliability problems

what size turbo you running

@@crw3673 it does! I have nothing to compare it to personally but everything I did for research pointed to smaller turbos

Hydrolocking....just extend the inlet plumbing to a higher location-- shucks you can run your intake to your roof if you want

Very informative video!
Glad you liked it!
With a rear mount would it change the whole exhaust setup? Just got a tomei and i would rather not lose it lol
Is it kinda unsafe on how low the turbo and its sucking in debris? I rarely see them have intakes.
It's sits much higher then you would think. No debris issues
I was thinking about doing a rear mounted turbo for my Q but $5k seems like a bit much. Do you know if a kit from a 350 or g37 would swap over?
Probly would need some modifications
Same here I have a q70 3.7 and want just a lil more power like 5psi
To be honest I really don't care too much about turbo lag in fact I think it's kind of fun waiting for boost to hit then feeling it start to floor you into the seat, however the reason I'm watching this video is because I've had a really bold idea in my head that I have to do now which is cutting into my trunk in my Miata and making a turbo that pokes out the trunk facing forwards with two entrys leading to the front side of the trunk almost by the doors, too crazy of an idea? Cause I'm kind of obsessed with the thought now
Sounds like it's perfectly fine to me! Kind of reminds me of the hard body guys that put it in the beds of the pickup truck
Rear mount twin turbo no more lag
Lag can be caused by alot of factors. Turbo size and piping can play a massive part
very true!
Been watching a few videos on the build and i enjoy the content! I bought a beater sn95 v6 mustang that i want to rear mount turbo when i upgrade the turbo on my galant vr4 to a holset hx35
Do it man!
Hi would like to ask how the turbo sucks up air if it's behind?
And to the car enthusiasts don't jump on me I'm just asking
There is air all around the car at all times :) there is a lot of air flowing under the car as well so it's getting a lot and it's 🥶 🧊 ☃️
@@blackpearlmedia7797 okay thanks
Check out Nugget Garage. His Supra has a setup that’s unbelievable. Biggest issue people run into. Now a days there is no reason to lower compression. Especially with the tuning of these systems we have now.
People using far too large an exhaust pipe diameter. People also not wrapping the system to contain thermal energy.
The lag. Think of it as perfect traction control.
I will be heat wrapping in the next few months! Definitely move videos will be coming out on that topic alone!
Yup they got 1000hp and used only 2 inch piping on a 1uz v8 which is what I’m thinking should have been used on this build
I really want to know how many feet of oil lines do you need

Welcome! Check out the playlist while your here :)
How much power are you making? What psi?
408whp and 402tq at 9psi. But there was 2 big limiting factors that I have updated! Shooting for 500whp and 400tq

You just gotta believe!
It takes a while for most of us
A boosted N/A miata sounds wrong😂
What about oil return???
What about it my friend?
I realize this is an old video but one con you missed is having to integrate a return oil pump because it can't gravity feed the return oil back into the oil pan all the way from the back of the car & sitting that low. I've always been fascinated with rear mount & mid mount setups. I plan on doing mid mount twin 70's hanging off the back of long tube headers on my 77 Chevy K10
I mean I don't think that's really a con. It's just a part of the system. Something that's necessary, just like an intercooler or bigger injectors. That's why I didn't really put it on the list, but that k10 sounds like it's going to be awesome!
Turbo lag is awesome!
