Robofly has wings, a “brain,” and the winged robot is able to make decisions completely on its own. Robofly is the world’s first insect-sized drone able to wirelessly take flight and it’s a member of an entirely new class of flying robots. Its specialties aren’t limited to the sky, it can also navigate obstacles on land and in the water, too.
And who is behind this latest innovation?
A team from the Autonomous Insect Robotics Laboratory, or AIR Lab, at University of Washington whose founding goal was to build a new class of autonomous robots modeled entirely after insects.
Using nature as a guide for human-built systems and structures is a practice known as biomimicry. The idea is that we can solve our difficult design problems by looking at how nature solves them. In the case of tiny autonomous bots, this can include things like figuring out what wing shape is most aerodynamic, or even how to mimic the mechanical performance of natural muscles and develop biological systems within robots so that they can power themselves.

@Andrew Capasso I have seen A LOT of science fiction, and about 99.9% of it was utter crap, with no thought given to actual science. I no longer waste my time.

The answer to that would be in the material used for the technology.
You would have to see it at the molecular / atom level, because they mix materials together for the chips and circuits, like with Silicon.
If it doesn't have Graphene, it's probably a form of corruption for "each" company in the way they make the materials for that technology. Remember that people are to blame, not the technology itself, "some people do blame computers and technology, for the faults of humans that make it, and humans are where it starts, and don't stereotype because people can be different, it really depends on who it is, and the company. Because technology can be used for very good things, depending on the innovation, if it's good innovation."

I like this for exploring missions that are sending probes to new planets and moons and all. It would be cool to have a water snake that can go to Europa
This biohybrid robo-fly will offer a lot of valuable data for us in the future. Very fascinating information!
In the worst case scenario (insects way become completely extinct, if the climate change continues) these gadgets will help us stay feed.
I've been following the development of these kind of things for 25 years now. It's not "a couple of years away" before we get well working flying robot insects. We're talking at least another 20 years IMHO..

In theory, this is really cool. In practice, I can't help but expect that this technology will eventually be used surreptitiously by the powers that be to create a panopticon wherever it is deployed.
They don't nearly have enough energy supply for that. There's a reason almost all these bots have been tethered so far

I think a good first practice mission is to fight the swarms of locusts. Maybe hone in on their aerial combat skills or load themselves with pheromones to crash the locust’s population.

They're more complicated to build, a propeller drone just needs a motor, a wing needs multiple servos or complex mechanics

and yet the tiniest quad copter like the Estes Proto-X can fly un tethered for up to 7 minutes in average weather for the cost of $50 and is no bigger than a half dollar... they even have a FPV version for $100... so how much money did they spend on THAT toy?
