      Not sure there ever were rules. But everyone had an interesting approach.
      Rome: Kill the enemy, parade their leaders, enslave some of them, and make the rest pay Rome tribute.
      Napoleon: We defeat them into a peace treaty, make them pay taxes while forcing them ally with us against Britain.
      Dutch: We steal everything the Portuguese and Spaniards have gained.
      Portugal: We mostly want to trade, but God forbid you don't give us exclusive trading rights, or we'll take down your Empire. By the way, do you mind selling us some slaves?
      Spain: We kill their leaders, enslave those that that can mine gold, and convert all of them to Christianity.
      Assyrians: We take over the lands and resettle the entire population in all corners of our empire causing them a cultural-linguistic genocide without mass murder.
      Mongolians: We tax 10% of everything, including able men and children ....but if they rebel, wipe out 90% of the population.

    • @Sorain1
      @Sorain1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Basically. The government and military might be perfectly willing to burn down their cities, and fields, and infrastructure. Hell, even some of the population might be okay with it. But not all the population.
      If they're willing to let you take the ground, then you dig in to keep it and suddenly their loss of all that stuff, especially if your the one the locals who didn't flee depend on for food/burnables/ect? They've lost a chunk of their country.
      Yes, you didn't get all the shines because they burned them, but it's not your shines being burned here. No nation can keep that up indefinitely because no population can withstand that for terribly long.
      It takes your winning being WORSE then having everything they know destroyed for that kind of thing to fly. When time with you holding land proves your being in charge is demonstrably not worse? Support for their war effort implodes on them.
      Now if you mean an enemy on the smaller scale (individual, unit of troops ect.) then you just set up a position where you have hideously overwhelming advantage (Fortified position with machine-guns covering the approach vs infantry for example) and let them kill themselves on you for minimal loss. They're willing to die, meaning their judgement of risk to themselves is already compromised.
      Keep in mind that's not 'willing to risk death', that is 'willing to accept the certainty of their death'. It does make them dangerous by conventional standards, but if you know your going up against it, you can swap tactics and get kill ratios so high your likely to be investigated by the Hague.

      +Sorain1 That only works if you can afford a prolonged war, because a weaker force is unlikely to attack a fortified position unless they are incredibly stupid. Neither Napoleon nor Hitler could really do that because it would give the UK and her overseas allies time to regroup and launch an offensive against them leading to war on multiple fronts which would spread their troops, resource, and supplies thin. Rebuilding fortifications and maintaining supply lines to secure captured Russian territory would have been too costly as every mile deeper into Russian territory increases the length of the front/border that would have to be defended. In addition, they would be extremely vulnerable to insurgency from starving Russian citizens who are just as likely to blame you for invading as their own leaders for destroying their own land to prevent you from capturing anything of value. Keeping the Russian citizens in the captured territory happy would add even more expense as would defending against resistance/insurgent fighters supported by guerrilla tactics by the Russian army since they had an advantage in manoeuvrability. All of which would leave Hitler/Napoleon extremely vulnerable to attack from UK & her allies.

  • @wjd23104
    @wjd23104 7 ปีที่แล้ว +425

    Arguably Hitler did have to Invade Russia. While Stalin and Hitler had signed a peace agreement, they both did so to buy time. Stalin assumed the French and British would fight a long exhausting war with Germany and whoever eventually one would be severely weakened (Obviously this kind of blew up in his face France surrendered within a couple of weeks). For Hitler it was a matter of wanting to avoid a two front war. The peace agreement gave him time to dispatch the Brits and the French and then fight Russia but he was fully aware that Russia remained a threat and when he couldn't achieve a decisive victory over Britain he launched a surprise on Russia nearly reaching Moscow.

      It is not completely untrue: the Luftwaffe had to face the RAF in order to bomb out the British ports and the Royal Navy. Without uncontested air superiority above the Channel, there was no way that German invasion forces could out maneuver Royal Navy units.

    • @georgelaidlaw3748
      @georgelaidlaw3748 7 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Fundementally true. Even if the Germans had mananged to win air superiority or even supremacy over the UK, they still had to deal with the Royal Navy. While you can bomb individual ships into oblivion, it is rather more difficult to destroy entire fleets that are protected by carriers, ship AA and harbour defenses. The RN would still need beating and the Germans had pretty much no good, quick way to beat it. That further hinders their ability to attack the Navy because they now have to divert planes to maintaining air supremacy etc. Would not be fun to be living in a British city and logistics would get even more complex but losing the Battle of Britain would, contray to popular opinion, not have immediately led to a successful Operation Sea Lion. There were significant questions as to whether the German transport barges were suitable even for the short trip across the Channel and they were certainly not amphibious assault craft. Once you have dispatched the RAF and RN, you still have to deal with the British Army who would ferociously resist any attempted landings leading to heavy casualties for the Germans. Most historians agree that Operation Sea Lion was doomed to utter failure regardless of the Battle of Britain.

      Maybe my history education isn't up to snuff on this but didn't RADAR play a big role in the battle of Britain?

    • @danielkorladis7869
      @danielkorladis7869 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Yes, because it basically comes down to that.
      The Royal Navy was far too strong for the Germans to mount an amphibious invasion. Yes, Germany could have used paratroopers, but they'd have to be resupplied somehow, and you run into the same problem.
      That's why the Luftwaffe tried to bomb Britain into submission, especially terror bombing against civilian targets, meant to demoralize the public (it didn't work, obviously).
      It's also the reason for the U-boat commerce raiding campaign, to try to starve Britain out (despite some successes, this also failed).
      If not for the presence of the *massive* Royal Navy, the Germans would just have invaded Britain like everywhere else.

    while this is true and it's kind of silly people think that winter was the only reason the nazis/napoleon lost in russia and it is a pretty big misconception, cracked just has a tendency to omit small details that explain lots of things
    Like the fact the nazis didn't have any tracked vehicles was mostly because the production of these vehicles was very new and the idea of massive numbers of tracked tanks everywhere was still barely even seen in the world's army's
    The production line at the factories were already producing all these vehicles and to switch around the assembly line to new ones would set back the production of new equipment for troops that needed it by months even years not just in the troop waiting to invade Russia but also in the Africa front that was an on going battle
    Hitler had a loose peace at best with Stalin, the communists were planning on invading Germany after they had their internal issues figured out after the great purge, the Germans were trying to take advantage of the Russian lack of command structure while they could, it's why they took as much as they did in the first place

    • @charlescalthrop2535

      Ardail Coffey I wouldn’t even call the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact a peace treaty. It was basically just utilisation of mutual motivation. Hitler was always going to fight the CCCP, as this was a major factor in his political theory of Judeo-Bolshevism. As you said the Stalin was also going to invade Germany so their pact was basically worthless.

The red army as disorganized, unprepared and showed no stance of immediate invasion. If Stalin wanted to conquer Nazi Germany early on he would have struck at Romania where the Wehrmacht was getting its supply of oil. Hitler even said it himself, that the USSR could have easily broken them if the Red army made that move but they didnt.
      "Hitler invaded Russia during the great purges, which meant that almost no one was there to lead the army and that Russian officials were too busy fighting each other." No, they did invade Russia in winter. The problem is invading Russia in SUMMER. In summer, you have to cross rivers, lakes and swamps. All three slow down armies in the Summer. Come winter Russia's rivers, lakes and swamps all freeze over thus Russia becomes a huge flat pancake. The Mongols attacked in winter when Russia is a huge flat pancake. Napaleon and Hitler attack in Summer with all of its problems and then faced the mud seasons marching instead of holding up till winter kickes in. You attack Russia in winter, then find a place to stay during the thraw or Mud season and consolidate your conquest in the summer. Thus long moves in winter where the rivers, lakes and swamps are frozen so none are barriers. Short moves between rivers and lakes in summer to consolidate your conquest. Simple, but you have to make sure your troops can move in winter and that requires good boots and other winter gear.

    The movie 1612 is a fictional fantasy, it had unicorns in it. Russia loses wars and gets invaded like any other country.
    Poland captured Moscow and the polish armies stayed in Moscow for two years. After negotiations failed, the Poles returned home. Russia was suppose to join the Polish Commonwealth, but difference in religion prevented the Polish King and the Russian nobility to agree on terms. When they left, Poland took a chunk of Russia to compensate (Smolensk area). That's how wars worked in the old days. Two countries go to war, the winner takes only a chunk of territory and not the hole country. Basically you can't take the hole country because the population will rebel and unless your OK with mass genocide, you better off taking a small piece. Usually rebels get financed by foreign powers and try to break up the hosting country.
    Same with Germany in ww1, they won against Russia. Just look at the territorial changes after the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
    Just check out territorial changes of Russia in general. When it looses a chunk that's because it lost a war.

    It looked like Germany was going to win on the Eastern Front until somewhere around mid 1942, which is when things started to slow down. The Germans made massive encirclements of Soviet troops and almost completely annihilated the Soviet airforce in the beginning of the war. They didnt think the Soviet Union wouldve been able to recover from the several total military catastrophes the Red Army suffered during the firts half of the war.
    Also it was mostly not the Russian winter that stopped Hitler. The Red Army and its leadership learned from their mistakes in the beginning of the war. The development and changes in Red Army doctrine from 1941 to 1944/45 was pretty massive. Also the idea that the soviets just threw men at the germans completely disregarding casualties is also wrong. This mostly comes from the catastrophic defeats of the Red Army in the beginning of the war and the conditions that the Red Army fought in at the battle of Rzev. not far from Moscow in 1942.

    Also, the Mongol invasion HAD to happen in winter, because that's when the rivers in Russia freeze over, and they could cross them on their ponies. Additionally, Mongol ponies were smaller than typical horses of the era and able to forage in snow. The Vikings also conquered Russia several times, and once they were finally kicked out, were literally invited back to rule once local Russian Princess started feuding. Furthermore, most of Hitler's army (contrary to popular misconception) was primarily horse-drawn (the so-called blitzkrieg was more propaganda than historifact), whereas the Soviet army was provided Ford trucks through lend-lease programs by the US.

    Also not invading Russia went against Moustache Man's own book and his idea that Communism and Slavs were as low as Jews
    Amd it wasn't just Moustache man thinking that
    All high ranking officials were completely with Moustache man on Operation Barbarossa

      Completely accurate. BTW the examples of others that defeated russia do not really count, because they only captured/ defeated a small portion of russia. Russia's strength comes from being 11% (!!) of the worlds landmass and having the oppurtunity to use fabian tactics as well as being able to have a function country while having an enemy within the borders, (for example: the russians moved an unbelievable amount of factories to the east before and during the nazi invasion). Only the mongols really were capable to concer russia and they are the mongols; they are the defenition of effecient war.

    Ok so you claim that the Germans sent heavy tanks and keeps and shit. And also said that they had tracked vehicles which if you had researched this subject well, you'd know they're called halftracks. But in reality Germany didn't have many halftracks and at the time of Operation Barbarossa, they didn't have a heavy tank. Mainly they were using light to medium tanks, like the Panzer 2,3,4 and Stug. All of those were able to Blitz the shit out of the soviets. Until they encountered T34's or KV1's. Which is why Hitler pushed Porsche and Henschel to produce the Tiger. And I'd say that Russia was at its strongest under Stalin. He could force millions to die with no questions asked. So to say Hitler just brought the wrong shit is quite false, he brought his best shit and when it got destroyed he made some shit that could destroy it. And then that shit got stuck in the mud. Also don't call it a Penis helmet it's a Stahlhelm.

    Germany had created the first assault rifle the stg 43 and it was used in the early stage of operation Barbarosa (Russias invasion) , it made a lot of damage among the russian ranks and suddenly idk why Hitler took it out of service and replaced it with traditional rifle. The stg 43 was retaken in 1944 but it was too late. Good job Hitler.

    He forgot to point out when the Mongolians conquered Russia, it was called the Kingdom of the Rus. The capital was Kiev, further to the south west. Moscow was a minor city at the time. Long story short, anyone who conquer or beat the Russians ended up being conquer back by the Russian and then Ruled over by them. Read Bismarck's many quotes about the Russians, the man had it figured out.

    This is the most cringey shit I have ever seen... the jokes aren’t even accurate... especially the helmet one. Also, Hitler didn’t invade Britain because their navy was too large - he just got caught up in bombing cities rather than attacking strategic military objectives with Britain. Note that many of Britain’s ships had to stay in port because of U-boats and German air superiority. There is also speculations that Hitler thought Britain would help him invade Russia (because British and German were fairly racial similar, while he saw Russians as a petty race). Not to mention much of operation seal-lion (invasion of Britain) involved paratroopers being dropped at strategic locations all over Britain. Basically, he waited too long, the good seasonal weather was ending so they gave up and set up preparations for invading Russia. So please at least do some real research before labelling yourself as, essentially, an educational history channel and then pulling shit like that in your video. I know you want to keep it short, but please, history is much more complicated than you let it seem to be here buddy. I don’t think history is you’re kind of subject... no offence - but please stop.

    • @mrtrugglez5567
      @mrtrugglez5567 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Sorry but no. Hitler can't invade Britain precisely because Britain has a bigger navy and also Britain having air superiority over the British Isles. When you try to invade an island, you want to make sure that after the initial landings, you will be able to supply your troops in enemy territory through sea. And to do that, you need air superiority to clear out close air supports from pummelling your troops, fighters from destroying your close air supports. And also Naval superiority to actually LAND and SUPPLY troops through barges along with shielding the invasion force from enemy ships or troops in land through naval cannons. It is exactly because Britain has a larger navy and air superiority over Britain and the Channel at the very start, they can intercept and destroy the German invasion force along with what ever German screen ship protecting it.
      And also "Many of Britain's ships had to stay in port because of U-boats and German air superiority"? Many =/= Most. Not to mention that Britain was able to send its fleet to patrol the channel, the north sea (Home fleet) and convoys with escorts (Destroyers, Corvettes and other screening ships) as well as the Mediterranean to disrupt Italian supplies commanded by the great Andrew Cunningham. Also U boats? Did you forget escorts have torpedo, depth charges and radar to spot submarines? And that U boats are pretty much a non factor post 1942?
      Not to mention the Brits launched an actual invasion in 1942 (well it's more of a raid). The Dieppe Raid, which managed to land British commandos inside Nazi occupied France by sea. So please enlighten me how naval supremacy is a non factor in invading an island nation.

    The germans had no heavy tanks at the start of the invasion. They also were not aware at beginning of the heavy support of supplies by the USA, the crawler wheels of the tanks were small and thus not good in mud unlike the russian ones, the strong winter came around 2 month earliert hen regularly and thus expected thats why they were not prepared. Hitler knew he had not the ressources for a long war thats why he speculated for a short blitzkrieg like in france. This channel is good but god this guy is so cringy.

    Well pretty funny video, though you don't really know history, my friend) So don't make it look like you do. Russia wasn't EVER conquered, Mongols conquered Russian's principalities(basically many independent states) and only in about 1497 Russia actually begins as a united country(after Mongol yoke, who actually helped in creating it in the first place).
    And you clearly understimate Napoleon, who wasn't just the Greatest ruler of his time, but also Hitler who almost made the whole World his bitch.

      Well, the mongols didn't conquer the Russia we know today, but that's only because that Russia didn't exist back then. They crushed the Russian princes and ruled over the area that would become Russia for a few centuries, with one of the longest lasting mongol clans the Golden Horde.

      hitler was a complete disaster from start to finish, his success was almost entirely due to the group of politicians and businessmen that used hitler as a puppet, he was a totally colossal moron and is the single greatest reason the Nazis lost, by the end anybody with good advice just got shot, axed, or ordered to go die fighting in a completely useless last stand (completely useless because his stated purpose would be so they could stall the incoming forces for instance, ever though most of those forces would simply go around and directly attack an even less defended berlin after encircling the armies hitler literally ordered to just die)
      keep in mind, the amount of land hitler conquered really doesn't matter for 2 major reasons, 1. he invaded a de-escalating Europe that was very intentionally trying to prevent future wars, he caught them by surprise, not by being outright logistically and thereotically a superior force (apparently a lot of meth helped this speedy advance aswell) which he couldn't hold worth a damn, he lost his entire 'empire' in just a few years, why? because 2.the Nazi's themselves weren't brilliant at much of anything, their rocketry for instance was less scifi and more 'adapted from fringe American researchers', their advanced military theory also didn't evolve to counter the counters allies developed, they came up with one tactic (completely ignored their navy) and repeatedly hammered away with the same technique, even after facing failures. meanwhile the allies genuinely won because the allied organization and adaptability was far superior, they saw problems and fixed them to save lives, while Nazis tended to just pile up more 'volunteers' willing to die.
