One of my father's friends from high school was killed in this battle. He was a radio operator. He was gravely wounded and ended up behind enemy lines when his squad fell back. He radioed his squad and told them not to try to get him as he was dying and the enemy were almost on top of him. The story was told in a newspaper article from that time (Roanoke Times). My father cut out that article and kept it his entire life. I now have that article. War is senseless.
This movie is AMAZING ! The worst parts of this battle ? Hill 937, the actual name of the site, had NO strategic valor, nor any particular relevance to the war. It was just a hill in the map, full of defenses and soldiers, but they could very much just flatten it with non-stop air strikes...but someone decided to turn it in a meat grinder.
Entirely false. Flattening things with air strikes in a dense jungle such as Vietnam doesn’t solve problems. An area isn’t secure until the infantry move into those areas and confirm it. That hill was infact considerably important, and the 101st’s objective was to blunt the fighting capabilities of the unit within this region, which they succeeded in- and even the north Vietnamese forces acknowledged that their casualty rates were considerably high, even when casualty inflation/deflation was at its peak. Your perspective of this battle has been muddied by the politics of the time and the media portrayal which took a number of interviews with the common man out of context. The soldiers fighting in this battle on both sides were VERY experienced, with commanders who were respected and equally capable at this type of warfare. Almost the entirety of the NVA’s units stationed in this battle were virtually vaporized in a final engagement, when the marine corps placed tanks on the hill which fired on the retreating soldiers as they attempted to cross the border.
The battle occurred due to US goals of body count during the war. Geography played a small part in it but the US military by 69 was fighting the professional NVA by this time and bloody battles like this became more common place.
In 1969, a platoon of soldiers fight in Vietnam, ending with a soldier dying on a helicopter. As they prepare to be sent into action again, a platoon of the 3d Battalion, 187th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), receives five new recruits as replacements-Beletsky, who constantly complains that he won't be able to remember everything he has been taught; Languilli, who is obsessed when people mispronounce his name; Washburn, a quiet, conservative man and the only African-American in the batch of replacements; Bienstock, who is outgoing and has volunteered for combat duty in Vietnam; and finally Galvan, the quietest but most promising of the new soldiers.
This movie is pure gold. I love it. It's my all time favorite Vietnam War movie next to Platoon and Casualties of War. The ending of this film is sad and powerful.
I personally like this movie over platoon; Both are great but I think It was really overrated while this one was underrated. I know it’s difficult to count every single body but can think of at least two that were missed. In the panning view at count #3, there is one body caught up in net in the river (assumed to be female) and another is a brutal quick shot of two soldiers getting killed by claymore tied up in trees.
Over the course of 10 days in May 1969, an infantry squad led by Lt. Frantz (McDermott) and composed of both seasoned troops and new recruits, attempts to take a hill during the Vietnam War. In between attacks, the squad members deal with the other psychological stresses of the war, including the effect on the morale of the antiwar movement back home and flashes of racial hostility between white and African-American soldiers, all mediated by the cool-headed medic, Doc (Vance).
People wanted me to watch this film after explaining why the hill was given that name, and I had to decline. I know it happened, I just ... imagining so many unique faces, lives with waiting families, turned into unidentified gore. It's one thing if it's fiction, but it's too far for me if it's from reality.

The saddest thing is this movie was made in 1985, but because the Vietnam matter was still controversial the producers waited to see if Oliver Stone's "Platoon" could be successful. After the box office hit and the Oscars, "Hamburger Hill" was finally released 😓 Irvin movie came first, but nobody knew
more like, it's change a lot, of course there will be something wasn't change, but that never was matter, because changed or not, another day and another bloodbath, that all matters.
Funny thing, always remembered my grandpa having this film as part of his VHS collection when he was alive. And yeah, quite crazy to see this. And question, was the head explosion edited down in the film itself, cause the edit feels too sudden to be in a film and more on you to get the video up. XD Either answer wouldn't shock me. XD
@@CarnageCounts Kay. Cause if it started with the head exploding, but only for a split second, cool. But since it was like mid-explosion, it was like Uncle Frank's death in Hellraiser where suddenly the edit showed the explosion mid-explosion, get me?
The crows. The worms. The Americans eventually pushed the Vietnamese off the hill, then realized they didn't need it for a strong point at all so they withdrew; they gave it back by just walking away. Hundreds of lives ended in blood and filth and muck, and for nothing. You could say the Vietnamese technically "won" because they got possession of the hill in the end. But overall, it was actually worth nothing at all, and cost a lot of good men everything they could possibly give.
Hill 937 have absolutely no strategic point or whatsoever, yet lot of GI were sent into the blender not getting know what they deal, not even after 1 months the hill was recaptured back by the NVA after US withdraw theirs troops Poor dude
Yes, America does, and often does, but never forget, every side and every person, even in those movies, those VC/NVA, off-screen and historical moment, they do got friendly fire, died of accident never forget to count or illness was still exist, of course, If the media always shows one side, you will always see only one side being the teamkilling as usual.
