It’s refreshing to see a Checkpoint under $2500, but the brakes are a bummer. Nice weight too though.
Great review as always, I hope that , with all those spacers on a carbon steerer they speced an extra long expander plug to support the clamping area of the stem.
It would also be nice to see an upgraded model with a dropper actuated by the left hand shifter.
If you’re going to transform road bikes into drop bar trail bikes, might as well go all the way!
From Montreal Canada! James, you're right. Old MTB's were rigid on 26"er's. Wow have things have changed.
I think that there is too many different bicycles now. Keep it up!
I bought a 2022 ALR5 and love it! I ride it more than my road bike.
I have the exact same brakes (and most other components) on my Merida Silex 300. they work fine and are easy and cheap to maintain. it's a gravel not an enduro... if you get this for around 1200-1400 I'd say it's a fair deal
I am thinking about buying this model. What do you think about mechanical brakes? I will use it for commuting, sports and sometimes travelling. I am an average user.
@@NikMan987 they do their job. i haven't had any problems with them yet. i mainly use it for going to work and back, but also ride steep mountain roads from time to time. of course, i normally ride an enduro with magura mt5 4 piston brakes, which is a different world, but for gravel the brakes are enough for me. i just start braking a bit earlier :) but so far they always react reliably
@@egazzz99 thank you. I would like to buy Trek Checkpoint ALR 4.
Thank you for noting the frame size during weighing it.
Priced close to the Kona Libre which I've been considering.
A positive of Trek bikes in WI is the dealerships and ability to see everything and get fit.
I like the look of this bike.
Your reviews are great, any thoughts on the GT Grade Comp Gravel bike? I'm about to pull the trigger on one on sale.
Just picked up the new Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 AXS from Landry’s Worcester. Decided to pay a little more and so glad I did. The bike I bought is amazing. You need to do a video on that bike. It’s a game changer.
I was looking at that one too, not sure about a dropper post on a gravel bike though, heard that droppers can give more seat movement from side to side . That green color with pink lettering is really unique
@@doziershaw9765 I am looking at the same one but with mechanical Apex shifters. The bike looks great on paper but is it that good when you ride it? why’s it a game changer?
The ALR 5 AXS for $2899 has electronic shifting , the new ALR 5 with 3 new colors and SRAM Apex mech shifters is $2499. I guess electronic shifting is the new thing now and is getting cheaper to make so will start seeing on less expensive bikes
On those mounts UNDER the too tube - they're for a 'bolt on' frame bag not for a top tube bag, also why it has additional mounts on the down tube.
Getting a checkpoint ALR 5 driftless size 61 now that the price dropped 600 bucks. I prefer paying 500 more for that than the 1799 for the 4.
Any chance your going to review the Giant Defy range?
The 5 is $2400 for hydrolic brakes and GRX.
I know canyon is direct to consumer, but you can get their grizl AL with grx and hyrdo disk brakes for $1,700. Obviously direct to consumer comes with its own pros and cons.
It's on sale now for $1999
Nice looking frame and fork, like that the dealer hasn't already cut the steerer tube and slammed the stem. Having said that would not have this model, it has two big problems for me 1x and sram components, can't stand either one. I would take a 2x micro shift before messing with sram and it would probably even be cheaper.
Microshift really isn’t too bad, I used them on my bike (in a 3x) and they just work. Their new Sword is actually really good looking with all internal routing.
Can you review the polygon path x5? Its currently on sale for 1200 and has shimano 105 drivetrain.
Trek should've put hydraulic brakes on here. It's criminal at that price imo.
Or, why not save weight and money- use higher end rim brakes
as usual by Trek, its still $500-600 too expensive for the parts that are on it. the colorways are cool and I've ridden the checkpoints ( the do ride well) but its overpriced for sure. wait a year or two and watch the prices of all these bike post pandemic continue to fall because manufacturers are making too many now thinking there is demand for them when there Isn't.
Driftless alr5 checkpoint was a big price increase over the alr 5 for a frame bag.
The manufacturer : it's gonna be called gravel bikes and you gonna love it !
Me : F*** off
Im just not in the camp that thinks 1x is suitable for gravel, doesn't serve the range needed
That Martian backdrop in the video ruined my perception of that beautiful bike
Trainer bike
Brakes are the only issue
Just buy a domane and put 650b wheels on it. You'll have a better two way bike. I got my 2024 domane al disc to 16 pounds
what did you change on your domane to do that ?
@@snakeshiet scram rival axs 1x, carbon wheelset, carbon seat post, carbon handlebar, saddle, and seatpost collar. Everything was just taken off my bike I had on the trainer with the exception of the collar. But right now rival stuff is really cheap online. I just picked up a rear derailleur for another build for 170 new.
I heard people get pedal strikes after doing that
@@drill_fiend1097 I don't understand what you mean. Why would you get pedal strike. I have 160mm pedals, but going to 1x does not change pedal height. If your referring to 650b wheels I would suggest a shorter pedal
@@kimwarner6050 i am talking about 650B. Not sure how the pedal strike has anything to do with 1by conversion.
Trek has now lowered the price of ALR 5 to $1999, just $200 more than this bike
That price should be hydraulic brakes
Still waiting for the 2x version.
Will they release a 2x version ?
@@zituado They have a 2x version in 11 speeds. Waiting for the 12 speeds version, if they will release it.
great review, but $1800 is 64% of %2800. Not half price.
Oh for goodness sakes 😂
pfft. got my argon 18 grey matter on sale for 1800
Trek is definitely taking the piss yeah? Giant are much more affordable and better value. Di2 defy for $4400 Aud these days whilst trek Australia want almost 7k Aud for di2 domane.
If they could just clean up the welds.. grind them off? would save a little weight... I like a understated logo from Trek for a change.
It's not safe to grind out welds. It will make them weak.
@@michalgnap5930 I am curious how Klein and other AL frames don't have big ugly welds... different process?
Mechanical brake on a $1800 bike? Wow, that's a big miss...
Alu bike with mech brakes for 1800??? Trek tax definitely in work here...
Maybe it's just me but Trek doesn't look appealing. I prefer Cannondale or Specialized or another brand not Trek. Seeing too many of them on the roads and trails. $1800 for mechanical brakes - I'll pass.
Yes, this was exactly my thinking when I was in the market for a "gravel" bike in 2020 a few months before the pandemic started. Was looking at the checkpoint, but I wanted something different from the road bike I already own. Went with a Surly Midnight Special.
I do love my cannondale
$17009? no wonder the bike industry is crashing.
Buy used
Et donc sans garantie,
du cadre, particulièrement. 😬 💸
Modt overpriced brand period trek
