I've actually gotten really good at doing this for myself. I've been doing the Russian manicure on myself for about two years. Practice makes perfect. As to why it's necessary to remove all that skin from the "pocket"... it's all about the way your nail looks as it grows out. The whole point of the Russian manicure is, as you said, to make it look like the gel overlay is growing out of your cuticle. So the better the prep, the better and more natural your nails look, even as they're growing out. This will minimize your trips to the salon. But I totally agree that this is something I would be extremely hesitant to offer as a service. I've never actually done this on another person, and I don't think I ever would. It is very invasive and cleanliness is of the highest importance. Not to mention the risk of injury with tools. I've hurt myself plenty, trying to perfect this technique, and still probably will in the future.
Nothing to do with the content, but you are so lovely 😮 thank you for the information, I’ve been doing my own nails for 10 years now and always appreciate videos like this
Grea video! I was getting an authentic russian mani for about a year, total game changer. Nails were gorgeous, lasted literally 6 weeks, didn't see new growth until a month in. But appointment is literally 2 hours and $120 a pop, just color, design extra $$. In this economy I had to give it a break. Now trying my hand at DIY... ugh it's a challenge. But your videos are so informative!
Totally get it. If you could wear the manicure for 6 weeks, that's approximately $20 per week which isn't too bad for having your nails manicured. $24 for 5 weeks, etc., etc., ... Also, keep in mind that you have to be very careful when doing your own gel nails. Improper cure due to poor quality products including curing units is high risk for an allergic reaction. DIY gel nails should only be attempted after proper training. Otherwise I highly advise using a good quality nail polish, or press-ons. Thank you for being here 💐
i no longer perform a full russian manicure simply because it takes too much time and work. i still love the clean look and honestly (if done correctly) i don’t think there is anything wrong with it safety wise….we simply do not have the patience for it in the US
7:51 sometimes you don't need to do it. You can take it off using efile. If you want to practice buy a bad silicon brush or silicone that has a lip that needs to be removed. Use it to practice taking the lip off with nipper or whatever. Then move on to practice on your own finger! One finger! Then move on to the next a day later or something. Keep in mind you can't do this in a short period of time span. You might get your nail bed weakened. You have watch like 10 videos daily about it to get the great understanding about it, even if you take calsses. I think knowing about it before taking classes and watching more videos after finishing thr course is going to help a lot. P.s not anyone have the stomach to do it. Make sure you have a kind of md mindset. 😂 but when you like it there is no way going back.😂
This was super informative! I’ve had a few clients mistakenly believe my service was a Russian manicure because I use an e-file but now I have the clear bullet points as to what entails one and can inform clients, thank you! Btw, what nail desk lamp is that one? Been looking for a bigger one just like that than the one I have 👀
I get the same service in Italy apart from the gel overlay. That is discretionary for ppl who want ricostruzione 'reconstruction'. Also our pedi are called curativo meaning medical pedi. Pedi with semipermanent application lasts over 2 hours even 3. Mani almost the same. It depends on the tech length of experience.
I don't like the way the Russian manicures looks. That pocket area always looks swollen and puffy. I also actually like the look of that bit of skin they cut off. Fingers look strange without that skin, imo. Years ago I had an issue with picking at my cuticles. It became a terrible compulsion that I had to deal with to stop. Every time I see a Russian manicure I think of the way my poor cuticles looked back then. But to each their own. I know the Russian mani is in fashion right now and many love it.
Paola I would like to know your take on the Brazilian manicure that has become trendy. From what I have seen on those videos, they are almost making a mini surgery on those nails.
I think you know my take if that’s what they’re doing :) Another fading trend that probably some will try and get wrong, until they understand nails and enhancements don’t need to be that complicated.
I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that service. All that tissue cutting and digging under the skin isn't safe. You can badly hurt someone if you make a mistake.
If you're like me and not fully committed to the Russian Manicure, check out my Modified Russian Mani Mini Course here: paolaponcenails.com/modified/

Fantastic! Glad this video can help you put it into words!
This is from IKEA, the lamp that is.

I totally get what you’re describing and agree 👍🏼
Thank you for the information! Is the gel brought onto base gel + colour + top? Or is it just 1 layer? Thanks!
I've tried to give myself a Russian manicure a few times. I didn't quite make the cut (pun intended), but my nails looked nice 😁
Hehe… easy does it… I have learned. Especially when doing on yourself.

@@PaolaPonceNails 🙌 yes!
Could you do a similar video of brazilian manicure? 😊
Don’t know much about it 🤷🏻♀️
I second this
