9 day overland car camping trip in the Jeep Wrangler JKU Rubicon through the most remote parts of Oregon , Nevada, and California that I could plot a route through. Along the way I had a chance to explore dozens of historic sites including mines, homesteads, and ghost towns. I also got to travel through some of the amazing desert landscapes of the west.

Casey , @ 10:01 - 10:14 , That's the Mill Site at Bonnie Claire for my Gold & Silver Mining Claim at Tokop . It used to be really nice but since I don't live on the property to where I can protect it , people keep stealing all of my equipment and vandalizing the place . The Mill Site was initially developed by Vic & Mellie Huson in the early 1950's . I purchased the Mine in 1969 from Mellie Huson after the Death of her Husband because she was unable to work it due to medical problems and her advancing age (she was in her late 70's) . The big steel-framed building up on the hillside across the Highway , is the old Lippencott Smelter that processed Lead ore from the Lippencott Lead Mine up in the hills west of Racetrack Valley in Death Valley National Park . Bonnie Claire Townsite is actually a historical site as it was the railroad terminus for all of the building materials used to create Scotty's Castle at Grapevine Springs in Death Valley , which was brought in from San Pedro (Los Angeles Harbor) on the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad . After everything was offloaded from the train , it was then freighted by wagon to the construction site in Death Valley .
Wow. Thank you for sharing that. That’s really cool getting some background and a little more history on that site. It was one of those places that I just stumbled across marked on an older map that I decided to stop and check out. It ended up being one of my favorite stops of the trip. Reall neat ruins and I could tell there had been a lot of activity at the site and in the surrounding area over the years. Cheers my friend. Thank you.

awesome trip, when you get home put some loctite on those pesky fasteners that vibrate loose and buy some torx bits for those racks, I am really inspired to get out and explore now, i recently purchased a new F150 4x4 and hope it would have off road capability of your jeep, I will still go anyhow but choose routes wisely, thanks for sharing your adventures with us
The Jk has solid axles. The Rubicon addition has lockers front and rear with an extremely low 4low. And to help keep all the tires on the ground it has front sway bar disconnect. 1/2 ton has none of that.

great video and I would put a little locktite on those bolts to keep them from coming loose
Done! First thing I did when I got home is replace those bolts with ones I can tighten with hex head wrench and loctited them down! Cheers!
Did you have a chance to drive up to Cerro Gordo mine/town or the Lost Mule mine? Swansea Gap is another great spot! You look down at the basin of Death Valley from about 6,000 feet. You can see Death Valley, Owens Lake and Valley as well as Mount Whitney from one spot! Great pictures from there!
I went to Cerro Gordo. I’m definitely going to make another trip down there. There were a lot of cool placed I just didn’t end up getting to. A lot of really interesting stuff to check out in that general area for sure.
Wow, you went through some beautiful country! People who haven't seen the desert think of it as just one giant sandbox, but there's so much variation in the landscape, the wildlife, and the foliage. I like the remote sites as well. I agree that the best places are where there's no other folks and it's peaceful and quiet.
When you were in Austin, did you visit Stokes Castle? I hadn't heard of it before, but Nomadic Fanatic (another TH-cam Channel) just passed that way a couple weeks ago on his way up the Lincoln Highway.

This actually happened to me. In the mid 1980s. I was laying out a partial thinning unit. Not huge. Eastern Oregon.. I was just doing my job. Timber Layout, at the time. I did encounter 3 people in the woods. Doing something illegal. Digging up a prehistoric site. Sifting it with shaker boxes. They did not know that I was watching them. I let my presence be known. Those people left the area.
I told my supervisor about the incident. Returned the next day with Cultural Resource, as well as law enforcement. The CR lady said, yes. This is a prehistoric site. The law dog set up cameras. They eventually caught those people. I am not proud of it. Just my job.
I know you are good about leaving artifacts on public land. Thank you. Just. Some ppl don't care.

Thanks my friend. I ran into, and spent a few days with a fellow adventurer but they didn’t want to be on camera at all. Luckily for me they were open to holding the camera for me a few times ;-)

I think jeep top tents alright great way to see things and you get away since you've had so many of them would you want to get rid of one very very cheap I would never be able to afford a new one or even a cheap one

You should contact the company about that rack. An off road product that needs special tools just for tightening a mount is a no-go. That rack should be easily adjusted/tightened with just your Leatherman. ..not using the file. Just my opinion though.

I agree completely. I have contacted them and they sent me a replacement set of bolts for that riser that can be tightened with a regular hex head. I’m good with that. I carry a set of those in my repair kit.
But a reminder for sure of how important it is not to have a bunch of stuff on your rig that needs proprietary tools to repair. Bad idea.

Coyote Works glad to hear the company stood behind their products. I find most small businesses want to produce good items and value feedback like this. Hopefully your inputs can make it better for all of us.
The glimpse of the bolt head I saw it looks like a tamper proof Allen. Probably used to slow down someone that would steal the rack system. I would keep them on and put some Loctite on them to keep from working loose. I would also get the tool and keep it in the vehicle tool box.
Coyote Works what type of bolt was our? I couldn't see from the video. I do agree on the loctite.

I do air down quite a bit. I’ll go down to 25 lbs or so a lot for off roads. I rarely go much below that but I’m learning that I can go a bit lower.
Coyote Works ya o have built a number of keeps in my day , ya 25 psi works good I think I went down to 20 psi with out beadlock wheels and my on board air was a little Co2 tank with a special regulator about the size of 2 footballs and over 3000 psi it would air back up all 4of my 35 inch tires also so many uses blow gun attached to clean out air filter multi use indeed ! Can you tell I love Jeep's lol wish I could build another

It is really an incredible place. One day I was at 180 feet below sea level at one point in the morning, and and camped at an elevation a little over 4,000 feet above sea level in the evening. Pretty cool area for sure!

Do you have a communications system for emergencies since you go to remote places alone? I like your whole setup, especially the roof top tent and the awning.
Other than a cell phone I keep a HAM radio in the rig. I can usually pick up a repeater or something with it. But truthfully neither are very reliable in a lot of the areas I go. Just too remote. I think the only thing that would really work would be a sat phone or one of those GPS SPOT beacon devices. Cheers!

All three of those items are made by Freespirit Recreation. You can check them out on their website at www.gofsr.com . The tent is the M55 Adventure Series, the Awning is the 74” Jeep Awning, and the tripod light is called the Readylight. Cheers my friend!

You are almost correct on the tool. As soon as I got home I pulled out those bolts with the proprietary heads on them and replaced them with bolts that I can tighten with a hex head which I have in my tool kit!

At 12:48 - is that yellow thing some sort of pull behind generator?
I’m not sure. I think so ;-)
Some of those units were generators or air compressors. They sometimes used air to run drills for blasting. I came across one a long ways up a mountain here in Idaho.
I like Mountain House meals too. But at $6 minimum a meal and for example beef stroganoff has only 250 calories a serving and doesn't come close to needs. I would prefer less palatable but better nutrition... Great views tho..
Usually I just eat the whole meal which is generally 2 or 3 “servings” so I end up getting somewhere around 500-600 calories out of one. You are right though. There is better food you can eat. For me it’s mostly a factor of convenience., weight, and bulk. When I’m multi day car camping I usually alternate “good” food with Mountain House meals.

Another great video about exploring. How much gasoline did you bring along those really remote areas? Also how was Gaia on this trip?
I carried about 6.4 gallons of extra fuel. And a couple of times I used every bit of it. Now that I’m getting the feel for the actual off road range of the Jeep I’m seeing that I’m going to need to figure out a way to carry more fuel. I’m thinking I would like to be able to carry about 12 extra gallons total. That would give me a pretty solid 300-350 off road miles.
Maybe you could convert that Jeep to dual tanks.

I'm so curious about your planning for this trip. How well were you able to gauge your availability to find gasoline? Did you have to top it off more than the one time you showed? I'd love to take off and do this someday soon.
I did fairly well on the planning for fuel stops. I did have to use my extra fuel a few times. The hardest part was the travel times in between locations I had planned to stop. When traveling the jeep trails and 4x4 roads it’s so hard to tell from a map what your average speed is going to be. There were several long sections of trail where it was rough enough I just couldn’t get much over 10.miles an hour. So several of my camping spots I had planned to get to in plenty of daylight, I ended up getting to really late at night or sometimes had to stop at another spot and camp before I even got to them.

Is there any way you could provide more detailed info on the route you took? Which roads? Locations we could find on maps and/or GPS? I’ve been considering doing a very similar trip and would love to go to some of the same places you show in this video. I would definitely be spending some time in Nevada as my best friend from high school

Awesome looking adventure. You’ve got a fantastic setup. I know that you carried some extra fuel with you but was wondering how much preplanning you had to do just to make sure that you could get gas when you needed it? The stone school house was delightful. You mentioned an old 1900s map; would expect your walls to be adorned with vintage and other maps. Really liked the stone-walled building. Your excursion into Stateline was fascinating with what appeared to be wood-lined vertical shafts. Oh, wow! A stone-lined entrance to a mine! And the one-room stone cabins remind me of the Eskimos' using snow and ice to build their homes - from the land itself - such a marvel of ingenuity and fortitude! Love it! What a marvelous fireplace/chimney from found stones. The old combination mill and smokestack seemed out of place. Whose idea was it for the detail at the top of the stack? Such whimsy. So many days on the trip - would imagine there are a lot of stories there. Thank you for this glimpse of the treasures South of you.
Great trip CW. Ive been going to Death Valley since I was probably 5.... We use to collect reptiles down close to their ( Panamint Springs area) just outside the monument, sleep in our truck, and display them at the Panamint Springs Resort (with their permission). Bus loads of european tourists would go thru their in the summer time and loved looking at the snakes, lizards n such we had caught. Good times, this was back in the 80s, never thought to film it but then We didnt have any way too..... 👍👍

How does fuel work on trips like this? Surely they cant go off just 1 jerry can and a full tank for 9 days right?
I usually plan fuel stops about every two to three days. I can get about 400 miles on what I carry on the Jeep. Cheers!
looks like you ran into my ex in Belmont lol i think you would laugh at our Jeep tool kit, but our leatherman puts in work for sure. we have lost a number of bolts n things traveling DV: control arm bolt, brake caliper bolt, entire tire carrier sheesh its never ending, those roads are tough! nice trip, good to see you down here in places i frequent. thx for sharing.
Ha! Yeah those miles and miles of washboard roads have a habit of rattling things loose for sure. And there are a lot of miles of them in DV for sure! One thing that I swear by is dropping my tire pressure on those roads. I’ll run sometimes down around 25-28 lbs pressure and that goes a long way to taking the edge off the beating my vehicle takes. It’s kind of a balancing act. If I get my pressures too low it’s hard on the tires.

loaded up, i drop the fronts to 12lbs and the rears to 18lbs. unloaded ill drop the rears to 12 also. the load range "E" tires hold pretty well down to about 7lbs but then we start losing beads, thats only for a serious rock crawl too. were on 35's tho, looks like your on 33's, 31's? i could see higher pressures then for sure. it can be bit of a chore if you have to keep airing back up for lengths of pavement also.
That’s good to know. I’ve always stayed above 20lbs just out of caution for not wanting to lose a bead. But maybe I can start easing down a little lower. I do run load range E tires so maybe I can get away with going to a bit lower pressures. I’m running 32’s now but as soon as I wear these out I will go to a 33-34 inch tire.
Oh ya, try it, you will be surprised. It really lengthens the footprint and adds suspension. I imagine your pressures might be a bit higher than what we use on the two door, but id try 18lbs then maybe 15lbs depending how you liked it. I haven't had 32's in years so i don't what differences you may have from 35's otherwise.
Hello great video was in Death Valley oct 2019 13 days but not ever enough days found some old mining areas one still had the tram towers and more.new sub .p.s. seen you went thru Goldpoint I spent 2 days there .and lots of pictures. Your not suppose to put out videos showing you and the Jeep out there doing it in the wilderness, your suppose to put out video after video of all the stuff one must have on a Jeep. Hate it when someone just doesn't get it that there's more to life than exploring in your Jeep. Life's going to pass you bye my friend if you keep spending your time exploring and not buying more stuff to put on your Jeep like the rest of SHEEP. Did I say sheep? I meant Jeep.
I just noticed as I’m watching for a second time that the American flag is flying in front of the court house at 15:40. So somebody must be taking care of that building or at least the flag. Did it have a light for flying it at night?
If not then who’s taking it down each evening and putting it up in the morning?

Like your vids and your craving for self exploration, but its also the fact that youre alone most of the time that makes me cringe...only because of the fact that you don't have a winch. PLEASE get a winch and stay safe!
Thanks my friend. I’m working on the winch. The front bumper and winch will likely be my next major purchase for the Jeep. Just takes time to save up enough of my lunch money ;-)
Chain and a hi lift jack makes a pretty decent poor man's winch in a pinch.
Smart driving and careful choice of routes can keep you out of trouble thus avoiding the need for a heavy bumper and winch. A heavier bumper can require upgraded suspension and the winch may need upgraded electrical power: alternator, batteries and cables. It becomes a money pit.
Is anyone else experiencing audio issues with this one? The video is just not synced up with the audio, and some audio parts overlap.

The cozy mountain is an awesome place. The wife and I make it a point to stop there when traveling the area.
I'm here in northern Nevada, we have tons of old sites like Belmont all through this state.
One of your best videos! And the places you went are at the top as well. Im in Northern NV. We did Death Valley in the mid 80s thru early 90s in just a car or truck with no shell.. keep up the good stuff👍

Mostly solo. I’d love to do some trips with other Jeepers but I just haven’t connected with any around here to get some trips planned with.

It is a concern but I don’t worry about it too much. If it happens I’m prepared to walk out. I have all the right gear to do it. Would be a bummer but really just an unplanned backpacking trip ;-)

Joel Web for the most part I do travel alone. The camera I use is a Canon M3 mirrorless. I like it because it’s a little more compact and lighter than a full size DSLR.

Great vid! I have a couple of questions for you... What kind of spare gas can and carrier is that? Also, do you ever meet up with any of your subs on your adventures? I live in SoCal, I have a Wrangler and have been wanting to explore Death Valley.
Thanks! The gas can and carrier is the Rotopax Jeep Spare Tire Carrier Mount and the can is the Rotopax 3 gallon can. You can get it all right from the Rotopax website.

Thanks my friend. I pulled those bolts when I got home and replaced them with ones that take a regular hex head that I have in my tool kit. I’m still surprised they would put a specialty bolt like that in there. Cheers!

where you get gas
At the gas station ;-). Lol. Sorry I couldn’t pass that up. I generally fuel up last thing before I leave town in Prineville. Depending on where I am going I will usually always fuel up in the last gas stop that’s closest to my route. Then I always take at least 3.4 extra gallons with me. And I’ll take more extra gas depending on how many off road miles between gas stations I’m going to be. About the most extra fuel I ever need to take is 13 gallons.

Wife has a new Rubicon. Drives less than 20 miles to work unless We have more than 1 inch of snow. than calls in give Her shit every time.

Great video! Another really cool spot to hit in Death Valley is Aguereberry Point. You need a short wheelbase high clearance vehicle to get there. We have been up there 3 times and not seen anyone else yet.
I haven’t’ heard of that one but I’m definitely doing another trip down that way this year. I’ll add that spot to my list. Thanks for the tip!
