  • Jeep Camping Overland Style - Oregon High Desert Historic Routes
    Another episode of Jeep Camping Overland Style. A couple days out overland car camping in the Jeep Wrangler JKU Rubicon following some of the most remote, un traveled offload 4x4 trails in Oregon.
    In this video I find routes to get me to a series of historic homesteads while I'm pioneering a route for a group overland trip this fall. Along the way I show some of the historic sites I find, some of the gear I use, and a lot of the remote back country routes that I travel. I also share car camping tips and tricks I've learned over the years.
    Hope you all enjoy!

    Exploring tracks and searching for lost history is one of the best ways to spend time in the backcountry!

    Maybe in another life you were a nomad; you definitely have your eyes on the horizon, but don't lose the importance of details. Your camp for the night was fantastically simple, allowing more time to wander. Thanks so much for the ride-along.

    Love the video and music! The only suggestion I'd make is to not have such a difference between you're talking volume and the music volume. It's kind of startling and I'm over here getting looks from my wife, lol.

    Wow... You're living the life I wanted to live! (...And still do, actually.) Unfortunately, Norway is not "offroad friendly"... And a rocky, jagged mountain trail is an unforgiving "road less travelled". Thanks for the videos and please keep us posted with any new ones! P.S. Oregon looks great! reminds me of the desert east of San Diego. d:D)

    I really like these exploring videos. You've got a nice little niche here with the truck camping/overlanding, gear reviews, showing the outdoors of Oregon and most interesting to me the history. I really appreciate that you do some research and explain it to us, if you have the time i wonder if you could find pictures to add too. This is something I started doing in Arizona recently after discovering the rich history here, that doesn't include mining, from the early cliff dwellings to the first white settlers leading to the Apache wars. Watching your videos inspires me to do something similar, but something more school project-ish and focused on the event. I think that's a GREAT idea having a meet-up and i hope it encourages you to have more, because later down the road i'd love to swap experiences with you and take advantage of a free guide to Oregon, a place i've always wanted to spend time in. :)
    Also, with regards to your dusty conditions at camp, i always carry an aprox 5x4 cutout of a sort of outdoor flooring/AstroTurf that i put below my tailgate and can secure with rocks or stakes. I also carry a heavy duty outdoor porch mat that i can put under my door or awning room entrance.
    Keep it up man, good stuff!

    I know this was filmed a year ago, but I would love to join you on a trip sometime. I don't comment much, but have watched a ton of your videos. Curious about your profession. I am not asking you to tell me by any means, none of my business. But when we meet up on the trial someday, I will ask. I have a theory but want it to be a surprise. That is unless it is in a video already and I have not seen it yet.
    Thanks again for the fun, I hope you have a blessed week Sir.

    With all these little drive-abouts, you have excellent options for planting 50 gal plastic drums with water, food, fuel, and other assorted shtf prepping/camping gear etc. Of course, I would suspect that you might already be doing that with geo-caching, and not telling anybody. Maybe when I get up there, great options could happen in these regards.

    Definitely need to bring out the drone and sky-survey those sites. Saves a lot of eyestrain at the horizontal, and be able to fly and see everything, and then drive to suspected areas, and good camping sites ahead as well.

    • @johnlord8337
      @johnlord8337 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Need to dig out that hand-dug rock well again, and positively (modern) cover-up the well head, and that will be a great SHTF water resource, especially in an out-of-sight locale.

      Wait till the outing, (as Im already here) and having my drone, and using it for some of the vids, and aerial surveillance, and having it do the "Follow" and "Watch" circling the controller, ... and we can have some tremendous shots ... plus I have some songs that are totally clicked into the vid - and laughable.

    Mountain House meals: yes, I understand the convenience of being quick but after so many years of having only that, or other brands, as a main course, to eat while backpacking I would never submit my self to those while overlanding. Its just too easy to light the Partner Steel stove and cook a decent meal, that includes coffee and breakfast in the mornings also. To each his own!

      @CoyoteWorks01  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's amazing that the well was dug by hand. Good point about the intact pieces. We use the Mountain House pouches as well. I've not used the breakfast ones though. Good to know that you liked it. Hey Casey (cool name btw haha). Did you mount your awning to the FSR tent frame? I was looking at these at their store in Bend and noticed the T slots on the frame of the tent! I'm getting ready to switch from a CVT Mt Shasta (mounted on my f150 rear canopy) to the M55. Are you still happy that you switched? I know you said before that the new tent is lighter and fits better for your application with your Jeep (and I know about the quick setup and no spring rods etc.); but if that wasn't a factor (for example you have a trailer to mount it on) would you still prefer the FSR tent over the cvt? One thing I use all the time on my CVT is the annex and the annex for the M55 has some issues. I go to high country lakes a lot and there are always a ton of skeeters so the annex is a lifesaver. Problem is they don't have one on display anywhere (the FSR annex). Just interested in what you think after using it for a while now. Thanks in advance!

    • @CoyoteWorks01
      @CoyoteWorks01  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m so much happier with the M55. I love the lower profile and the fact that it’s just easier to set up and tear down. Yes I mounted my awning directly to the t-slots in the base of my rooftop tent. It’s worked really well and I didn’t have to get the extra mounts to attach it to my Rhino Rack. Welcome to the Freespirit family. You will love that M55. Oh and the guy that works in the Freespirit Retail store is also named Casey. Can’t get much cooler than that right?!

    • @CoyoteWorks01
      @CoyoteWorks01  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree 100% my friend. I love the wide open spaces. It does get hot in the days but it cools down nicely at night. Most of the time even in the hottest parts of summer it will cool down to 50 or 60 degrees at night. Generally once the sun starts going down it starts to cool off which is nice.

    Casey, would you be open to folks bringing a metal detector out on your open invite to the area? Metal detectors can help locate human activity where they eyes can't see it. I'd like to tow my offroad trailer out that way especially after the summer heat dies down and we start to get some crisp cool nights, possibly light snow out that way.
    FYI...I'm on the west side up against the northern Oregon coast range on the edge of the Willy Valley, so it's a good 5-6 hours to for me to get over to central Oregon.

    • @CoyoteWorks01

    As a purely city woman, I didn't find this boring. It's a bit like looking through the looking glass, at another world, another aspect of life that I don't experience. Pretty interesting to see what a man gets up to out in the woods all alone.
    In case you care how I ended up here & subscribing ... I recently took an interest in emergency preparedness. That caused the TH-cam algorithm to go bananas with lots of outdoor & prepper channels. Some, like yours, are interesting or have tidbits of useful advice, so I subscribe. So, keep going on 'boring' adventures, knowing you have at least one female in the audience who's fascinated anyway.

      That’s actually really interesting to hear your take on some of my content. Glad to hear you developed a bit of an interest in prepping. My interest in prepping, and in history are closely related. I think there are a lot of lessons to be learned from those early settlers. They basically were preppers in a sense. They had to figure out how to be self sufficient, how to live of the land, how to improvise, adapt, and survive making do in large part from what they could get from their environment.
      Thanks for taking the time to share your comments. Was really interesting to hear a bit of your take on it. Cheers!

      Coyote Works Oh yes, your history interest come thru in the kinda poetic way you were imagining life in the spots you found.
      Prepping seems very gear-centric. I guess that's because it's pursued mostly by men focused on the rugged survival phase, rather than the feminine / communal how-to-rebuild and help each other phases.
      I'll never be a full-on prepper. At 5'5", I'm simply too small to carry everything I need to survive long enough. That's ok. I'll do what I can to help others along. So the info I'm learning here and elsewhere gets absorbed in that context.

    Great video. Serious question regarding any permits required where you travel and camp especially for out of state travelers. Here in WA state we have the Discover pass that can be bough for a twelve month period and at my age of course the lifetime pass for all federal land and parks?? It seems difficult to find the correct information for Oregon state. Any information would be appreciated.

    • @CoyoteWorks01
      @CoyoteWorks01  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks my friend. Whether or not you even need a forest pass depends on where you are going. Different national forests may or may not require a pass. You really don’t need one anywhere in Eastern Oregon where I travel. And you don’t need one for the BLM land in my area either. Mostly the pass system is for more heavily used national parks or forests. If you know the name of the national forest you are planning on going to you can look it up by that. In my area I have the Ochoco National Forest, and the Fremont National Forest. At least those are the two I spend the most time in and neither have any pass requirement. But the Mt Hood National Forest on the west side of the state does.
      Hope that helps my friend!

    • @prophotos365
      @prophotos365 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Casey my Golden age pass ( I think that is what they called it) covers me in all national parks and forests for entry and camping fees at campgrounds that require payment for half price to use the camp grounds. Our DNR permit does the same for state land I was hoping there was a yearly pass in Oregon for a one time purchase each year and then forget it! Appreciate you quick response.

    I always enjoy your adventures. Have you ever researched the towns you have found? Why were they there in the first place? Mine? Stagecoach stop? It looks like it is the middle of nowhere now! What would have been there 100 years ago to make somebody build a town? Still very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

    • @CoyoteWorks01
      @CoyoteWorks01  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely. I’ve researched most of them that I find. A lot of them were stage stops, pony express stops, etc. A lot of them were just little communities formed around an area where there was a concentration of homesteaders. They usually started with the most basic things they needed...a post office, school, general store, blacksmith shop. And if the area was suitable for people to be able to make it very long off the land the community would grow from there. But there were also mining towns that sprung up around small gold or silver strikes, etc. Fascinating stuff. Cheers!

    History will not be forgotten with your explorations, thanks for sharing. I do have one question though, why all the weapons? Since I've began following you I've never seen any reason in your films for a weapon, therefore the question.

    • @CoyoteWorks01
      @CoyoteWorks01  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks my friend. The reason for the guns is mainly just that I like them. I’ve been shooting all my life, and when I grew up we always carried guns in the woods. It’s just kind of a tradition I suppose. And one that I enjoy. Cheers my friend.

      beter to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. besides there are only two types of people that get that remote. exploring jeep campers and sketchy people looking for a place to hide.

    My friend, want your opinion on 55" try layer tent made by your tent manufacturer

    • @CoyoteWorks01
      @CoyoteWorks01  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh man! I havent’ tried the tri layer yet but I’m dying to this winter! I’ve heard it’s awesome. I think it would be a great way to go. Better insulation in the winter, and in the summer the M55 is so well situated with window and venting I don’t think it would be a detriment at all. I’m thinking it’s going to be the way to go. I just haven’t had a chance to try it yet. Cheers. If you end up going that direction let me know what you think. I’ll probably switch out to the trilateral in October or November.

    You need to add a drone to your recon set up. Much more efficient for searching large distances like you have there. Additionally, you'd be able to see things from the air you'd have a hard time seeing on the ground.

      @CoyoteWorks01  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We were just out at the Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival last weekend. They did a couple of lengthy classes on drones. If it's a matter of cost, DJI is coming out with a new version of the Mavic. There may be some deals to be had on the secondary market from people upgrading and selling their old Mavics. Keep and eye out. We'll probably pick up a less expensive one to learn on and then grab a Mavic when we're ready.
