  • Back at it with the great drone footage from the mavic mini of some ohio river barge traffic and of course some more footage of the homestead projects. In the woods today with the John Deere 755 Compact Utility tractor doing trail maintenance on the four wheeler trailer. Using the tractor to carry the brush out and cutting the brush with our new Ryobi 40v battery powered chainsaw.

I just want to say, i love your explanations of what you are doing, and your family vids, and the barge shots. They are so RELAXING! Keep it up! Remember, Rome wasnt built in a day, keep at that honeysuckle(be glad its not Kudzu!) and Roundup really is your best friend in this fight. Just spray it on the honeysuckle vines and bases, it wont come back. It also dies when it hits dirt(the Roundup does).

When I see "trail maintenance" I think of my father. That's what he did? He worked for the Park Service. He helped maintain back country hiking trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They also maintained graveyards where people were buried before their descendants were forced off the land when the Park was created. Daddy was on Hazel Creek building a foot bridge in 1974 when he had a heart attack. His co-workers had to revive him, pack him out and carry him across Fontana Lake by boat before an ambulance could pick him up and take him 30-40 miles to a hospital. He seemed to respond well to treatment but on the day before he was to be released he had another heart attack and died.
We have honeysuckles here but they don't get as big as yours. But we have grapevines and muscadines. And worse, we have the dreaded kudzu. I am on a mission to rid the world of all the vines I can before I kick the bucket. Sorry I didn't mean to write a book!

I do my vines differently. I cut them off about 3’ above ground just like you do. But, I hook a chain around the roots and jerk them out. Haven’t had good luck with them dying out when I leave them.
My neighbor cut a path along our property line. It is for his little kids to walk and ride bikes. I pointed out that all those sticks coming up knee high from the forest floor were Poison Ivy. Morning Cap! Have a river questions. Not being familiar with your part of the country, although I did have family who lived in Jeffersonville. So here it goes. Does the agency responsible for navigation on the river (if there is one) require pilots or does the Ohio not require any form of navigation assistance? Given the size of these barges I would assume that transportation up and down the river would have to be regulated for passing?? Again these question are from an FNG who has little to no knowledge but interest! Thanks.

Still liking the drone footage, do you go down to the river or are you flying from your home up on the hill. Sure seems like you have some good batteries in it. I once saw a guy with an airplane type drone and he hooked it up thru a cellphone to fly it over the cell network and flew it from one of the islands in Hawaii to the next and back. Took a few tries because he was loosing signal between the islands but eventually found a spot where the coverage linked together. Forest management looks like it’s coming along good. That was an interesting implement for the tractor, seems to do a good job. Stay safe, wishing you and your family the best.

I just don't understand, Michael. You put all that work into making your property better, but yet you clean a trail, or a particular area of the woods, and then just push the crap off to the side of the trail. Why? I noticed you doing that when you were cutting in the road. All you're doing is making a mess that will eventually need to be cleaned up another day. Seems like you're working against the grain. I know you got your burn piles but man, sure seems random. Not hatin, just saying.

2ridered2 Have To make access before you can start cleaning areas. Two: I don’t own every piece of equipment and I can’t have every piece of equipment every day. So I do the work specific to whatever equipment I have at the time. I won’t waste time or money doing anything other than the task I rented Th equipment for. I can always clean up brush and timber on my own time.
