“We need to talk about the third major VR headset” *holy shit someone’s actually mentioning the WMR headsets* *proceeds to talk about PSVR* “The Oculus Quest was the first big implementation of inside out tracking” -Oculus quest released in May of 2019 with inside out tracking -WMR released in October of 2017 with inside out tracking Bro we exist too stop pretending we don’t we have feelings as well :(
@@PlayerZeroStart WMR is an abbreviation of Windows Mixed Reality, Microsoft's line of VR (Not AR, ignore the name) Headsets that had initial designs and specs given by microsoft to PC OEMS (Lenovo, Asus, Acer, HP, Dell, and Samsung) and they were supposed to modify them and release them as products (with only HP and Samsung modifying them in any way), with microsoft handling the software, having it built-in into windows 10 as the Mixed Reality Setup or something. Using 2 cameras, and a plethora of led lights on the controllers, the hmd could track your room and controllers without the use of external sensors, thus being one of the first major headsets with inside-out tracking. Unfortunately, they never had great success in 2017 when they were released as they weren't advertized much, and the wmr platform wasn't/isn't as developed as the Vive and oculus ecosystem were/are. WMR became slightly popular when headset went on major discounts becoming viable budget options to get into VR. (They also had support for SteamVR content) Most WMR headsets you will find nowadays are used on eBay, except the HP Reverb G2, which is coming in November for the first preorders.
the whole time i was watching this I thought how if his character in vr had legs it would just be some guy in a green and black shirt, helmet, and gloves with a speedo on
The quest used a vslam (visual simultaneous localization and mapping) algorithm. It picked out stationary objects and used their relieve positions, orientations, faces showing, texture, amount of the texture showing, side of the texture showing, and perceived sizes as well as an internal gyroscope and accelerometer sensors to determine its relive position. Ironically this same system is used on many smart robotic vacuums. Also the headset had 4 cameras, one per front corner. Also the constellation system would flash the lights in a specific order as well as having a unique constellation for each face to help with accuracy and orientation. While the htc vive system used infrared sweeps of the room and recording how long it took for the sensors to revive the signal. However in order to get accurate tracking they had to include a synchronization cable to make lighthouses sweep at exactly the same time. Also modern 3D movie glasses use polarizers to split the image.

I actually forgot to watch this video ages ago but went back now that I'm getting a vr headset like 1 week before christmas that I saved up for for 2 months
The sound was actually intresting. It gave some sense of depth to your voice and the reverb of your room gave a somewhat robotic voice to your avatar and it really matched up with it.

@@blucky_yt i know of vr chat but i meant specifically something more like in this video, one person explaining a topic while another person draws and brings up stupid assets like that skull thing. something about this entire concept seems really fun to me + is probably lighter on the editing work required compared to a usual video like that. too bad tiltbrush doesn't seem to have multiplayer support :/
This video is amazing, and not just because of the kawaii-esque >o< eyes. Or the skull jumpscares. 3D and VR have always made me sick and given me eye strain, especially since I already have to wear glasses, but I've always been very impressed by the technology that goes into them. Thanks for educating me on the topic in such an unconventional and fun way.
You know once VR becomes more consumer friendly I wonder if it’s even possible to allow you to wear glasses while wearing a headset because by design a headset kind of screws over people who need glasses. (Edit) I just realized contacts exists but my point still stands because forcing people with defects they were born with to pay more is still a problem.
(Brain wave) what if instead of having the player squint there’s a option for bad eyesight where looking at a spot for a second causes the game to zoom in.(and keep things on screen for more time)
Tech Rules is run by a machine ghost that can now inhabit a VR headset to make themselves seem real. Also, I own an Oculus Quest, and I would not complain about the tracker reliability. They have quirky moments, but they work 99% of the time, including in fast-paced games like Beat Saber. The Hand-Tracking thing Oculus is experimenting with seems interesting, but it is far too unreliable to be anything more than a gimmick at this point. I also hope the intrusion of Facebook into the Quest 2 doesn't drive too many people away.
"Happy Halloween" -The guy that did that vid on how Five nights at freddy's AI works This is now my phrase for when something goes wrong and you can't stop me
I love this nice long way of learning. I (oddly) enjoy lectures, as long as there's some jokes or something funny thrown in. I'm glad you had some fun, but a more...vibrant background than plain ol' Google nothing may have been more appealing to look at for over 40 minutes. Maybe even your drawings in the background.
I enjoyed the video. I know two people with VR, myself and a family friend. Two notes, I feel windows mixed reality was kind of skipped over for early consumer inside-out tracking. Furthermore, Rift S was like outsourced to a different company than Facebook and then didn't have the upkeep that happened with the quest on software updates (though I have an index, as why live reasonably when you can have the best tech and also be poor).
It's honestly pretty simple. Each ghost has several passive phases they alternate between with varying consistency: Idle - The ghost is doing nothing Wander - The ghost picks a nearby possible point and moves to it. Interact - The ghost uses a nearby non-throwable object, like a door Throw - The ghost throws something Ability - The ghost attempts to use its ability if it has one Event - The ghost picks one of several allowed ghost events and physically manifests for a moment Kick Power Interaction - The ghost specifically interacts with the fusebox if it can DOTS Wander - The ghost manifests in DOTS and wanders, only if it can Hunt Start When a ghost starts Hunting, they have three phases: Wander - The ghost picks a spot to wander to in an attempt to find a target Track - The ghost tries to pursue a target it lost line of sight with or heard a sound Pursue - The ghost sees a potential target and will give pursuit relentlessly.
That melee joke was pretty funny. I went to smash tournaments before covid, the melee guys bring like 10-20 CRTTVS. The tournaments were either on the second floor of the engineering building or in a basement that had a bowling alley in. Glad I play ssbu instead of Melee.
I'm actually kinda surprised/dissapointed that you didn't cover the microsoft hololens tech that got turned into windows "mixed reality" headsets- that frankly, I don't think anybody uses as anything but a VR headset. The headsets are lower cost, same inside-out tracking as Oculus uses, and works with SteamVR (albeit, it requires another app but it runs by default with SteamVR anyway so...)
Interesting video. I personally have never owned a VR system for basically the exact reasons you said. They're rather expensive and there aren't a lot of good games out (besides Half Life Alyx based on what I've heard). Though I also hope that not only will the prices go down, and the quantity of games go up, but also that things which increase immersion like leg tracking and more will become easier to find and purchase. Once all of these things take place, I will happily get a VR system, but until then I shall patiently wait.
But there are plenty of games? Heck even games from the 90s and early 2000s have been ported to vr there's so many and for full body tracking it isn't a necessity especially when playing alone
This video was great, I could probably watch content like this for hours and still be entertained (portal music probably helped with that). I know at the very end you said you wouldn’t do this again and your other videos are great but I just want to watch more of this, something about it is just really nice and relaxing
The Inside out tracking problems aren't nearly as bad as you describe. I own a Rift S, have tried it in multiple rooms and lighting conditions and the only problems I ever faced was with my room being too dark. One light and it was once again perfect. And the controllers even better. You can cause a controller to drift if you obstruct it, but I can remember only 1 time where that happened. And it lasted about a second. I have had no issues with blind spots, even besides my body, where games sometimes leave weapon slots. Other than that, great video!
@@PlayerZeroStart Price is too much when gaming peripheral costs as much as a console, not to mention all the downsides that would give you buyers remorse, such as space required to comfortably play VR, setting it up with al those cables everywhere (no matter how good VR headset is I can't get in the game knowing there's a damn cable I gotta look out for), needing good PC to handle it, and not many people being able to have one cause motion sickness, so for them its kinda a gamble at first. Not to mention the shitty DRM stuff happening - I heard Facebook needs you to login to a fb account just to use their vr headset lol. So no it def ain't worth it for me. Not to mention some VR headsets are just bad, narrow fov, blurred image... if I am to spend 400 bucks for game peripheral I'd want it to be PERFECT, this ain't a computer, a phone or a console, it's just a headset you play some games with it, games that would most likely be just as well without VR. it ain't a painting or anything decorative for you or your home, it's a "plastic games thing"
@@DyoKasparov 1. You don't need a good PC anymore. The Oculus Quest is the same price as a Rift S and is specifically designed to work without a PC. 2. You claim part of why VR isn't worth it is because the games would work just as well played on a screen, but that's blatantly untrue. Look at all the games that are VR exclusive, like Blade & Sorcery, Beat Saber, and hundreds more. They wouldn't work anywhere near as well played on a screen because you literally can't play them on a screen. And even with the games that have VR as an option but can be played on a regular screen, playing them in VR offers an entirely different experience. Take Elite Dangerous for example. Outside of VR, it's a fun but ultimately uninteresting spaceship game. But in VR, you get the experience of actually feeling like you're there, blazing past planets at faster than light speed. It's both terrifying and beautiful all at once. Almost crashing into a sun in Elite Dangerous elicits a response of "Oh, that was close". But doing the same in VR makes me genuinely afraid of crashing into it. 3. Don't like DRM? Simple. Buy a headset that doesn't use it. The original Vive doesn't have any DRM and, though it once costed a lot, it's the same price of a Oculus Rift. And 4. If you're looking for VR to be both perfect and affordable, you're asking too much. The only way for VR to be perfect is to spend a ton of money on the expensive headsets. $400 is about as affordable as it can be without being completely unusable. However, no technology is perfect when they start out. From a technical standpoint, the original NES was a complete nightmare of poor engineering that leads to it being easily broken. However, because of the new experience it brought, one unlike ever seen before, people still bought it. And if people didn't, we wouldn't have the Playstation, XBox, or any game console beyond what we had back then. If the NES flopped, companies would have looked at it, saw home consoles as a terrible idea, and nobody would have made anything more. Nintendo would probably still be a toy company. VR is in the exact same circumstance. Now is the time we need to invest in VR systems. The reason so few companies are putting any work into VR is because so few people are buying it. And if this keeps up, VR as a medium will die out. If not completely, then it won't come back any time soon. We need to show game companies "Hey, VR is something we want and something that's worth investing in." And when that happens, then we'll get more VR headsets, new innovations in the industry, and eventually we will have that affordable, perfect VR experience that won't require a PC at all. But that won't happen if people don't support VR. If you take a look at VR and decide you don't want to buy one, that's fine. I understand. But by going out and telling everyone that VR is some unaffordable toy, you are actively hurting the industry.
22:25 Yep... I was one of the people who didn't have any issues. My DK2 could track so well, I moved it to the ceiling and gave myself 270 degrees of freedom standing VR. Oh, and the hand controllers? Razer Hydras. I still have both.
11:04 and also 13:20 Fun little tid bit that would've made drawing shapes a lot easier; Tilt Brush actually has guides for shapes! Basically you can spawn in a sphere or a square for instance, and your pen will snap onto the shape.
34:30 wouldn't it work better then if they stuck say printed out QR codes and tell people to put them on walls in certain directions (i.e. to the left, to the right, above, below)? It would give them a defining feature for the cameras to look for and could work in any room with decent lighting? ...but at that point you might as well do the lighthouses again, since the idea is just a more primitive version
I believe that's actually how Valve originally tested VR, they put a model of that room in a game (that I cannot for the life of me remember the name of)
I mean, it's like the lighthouses, except you print them out on paper or card so they're cheap and there's no wires. It sounds good enough to at least try.
Good idea but doesn’t cover big rooms or outside (let’s be honest nobody will play VR outside) this could just be a solution to smaller rooms for cheap so if this was implemented some people would be fine as a solution (Edit) I just realize I could get backlash for what I said about playing outside the reason for me saying nobody will play outside is because then you could run into hardware problems or something and people who play vr probably don’t want to be outside in the first place. However if you have a reason for why people want to VR outside then tell everyone or you could just tell me I’m a dumb idiot who knows nothing about VR and computers (which is true)
While that would be interesting he'd probably have to do a lot to keep it SFW on YT. Perhaps a history of adult games would be better, due to text adventure, arcade, and point and clicks existing possibly before what could be called the first visual novel hentai-type games (which in itself is text adventure but with more visuals/audio).
I'd like to add that another thing that still needs to improve for VR to become mainstream is the visual mismatch issue. I'm someone who owns a VR headset and even I don't use it very often because I can't play most games on it for more than 30 minutes before I start feeling sick in some way (motion sickness, headache, vertigo, etc) and I'm someone who'd never even experienced motion sickness before I tried VR. It makes it hard to choose to play a game using it when I know the session is going to leave me physically uncomfortable. One thing I'd like to see become the norm in VR games is just offering more customization for your virtual representation (limb length, height, eye distance, etc). Even when I've tried out higher end rigs like the Vive, I've found that there will often be something that's just off enough that it makes the experience more taxing than it should be, but nothing I could do to try and fix it. I just had to deal with it until I felt too awful to keep playing. Additionally, the ability to save your settings to a unique profile. For games where you might want to take turns with other people (Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, for example), it can be especially frustrating when every time someone swaps out, the new person has to spend a few minutes fiddling with settings to change it to what they need.
Really love this. As someone who’s slowly gotten into vr over the last couple years, finally taking the deep dive from the Rift S to Index with full body about 6 months ago, it’s really awesome and encouraging to see more TH-camrs getting into vr with covid and all. Not to mention the Quest 2 making it more accessible.
VR sounds like it would be super cool for playing D&D Like helping you really visualize what you just did to that poor bandit by making you actually act out what you did
This was really fun and cool! For some reason the end made me tear up, I guess because it’s nice to feel excited and hopeful about something for once. Thanks for that!
This is a really comprehensive video and explains how vr works in a simple, fun way! The only thing I believe you missed was how smartphone component development didn't only help what goes into standard VR headsets, but how smartphone vr became a super easy way for the general public to try out vr, with the Oculus backed Samsung Gear and the Google Pixel Daydream, and a slew of 3rd party android apps and "headsets". Still fairly rudimentary, especially when the vive was in all ways superior, I remember seeing these things all over, and I believe smartphone vr was the stepping stone to the quest headsets and their success. And now with second edition of the quest, which I've had the pleasure of using, things keep looking up, with 90hz refresh rates and great improvements to the inside out tracking. I can't wait to see where we go from here!
I literally just found your channel and finished watching the FNAF vid, but holy shiz this VR stuff is hilarious and cute. If you ever get the opportunity please make more in VR. I'm subscribing!

What's WMR?
(They also had support for SteamVR content)
Most WMR headsets you will find nowadays are used on eBay, except the HP Reverb G2, which is coming in November for the first preorders.
yeah he said big no one cares about wmr sadly
“Here, let’s put a whole bunch of wires in your room, while you play a game that effectively blinds you and makes you walk around your room”
You don’t really walk around very much lol.
the whole time i was watching this I thought how if his character in vr had legs it would just be some guy in a green and black shirt, helmet, and gloves with a speedo on
He doesn't have legs because he would be so arousing that we wouldn't be able to focus on the knowledge.
LIL, did you just describe Power Rangers?.
OCCULAR, THE ENDER OF WORLDS

32:09 the robot eyes made an excelent work in the specific frame when the skull appears tho, i can't stop seeing this scene
"picture I have legs and I'm walking all over the place right now"

Tech Rules' Eyes: Thematically and appropriately reacts along with what is said almost perfectly
i beg you PLEASE make skully a recurring character. spooky skeleton vr boi must return
I agree
The bad mic is actually a strength, as it sounds like how your avatar would sound.
I found this channel back when early days of 3DS hacking was the only video on the channel, and it’s become one of my favorite channels on TH-cam!
I found this channel like 7 months ago when all the videos on the channel were still the same and there haven't been any uploads since, but I'm really looking forward to the next one. I actually forgot to watch this video ages ago but went back now that I'm getting a vr headset like 1 week before christmas that I saved up for for 2 months
This man is a hero, getting sponsored by a literal ballshaving company.
While I'm not wild about this sponsor, I'm glad you're getting sponsors. Keep up the excellent work, dude.
The sound was actually intresting. It gave some sense of depth to your voice and the reverb of your room gave a somewhat robotic voice to your avatar and it really matched up with it.
The portal music was a nice touch.
i love this, more people should make videos this way, it's hilarious. happy halloween everybody!
edit: just realized people could make "in person" video collabs this way, even if meeting up is impossible. this is so cool. happy halloween everybody!
Ever heard of VRChat meetups/meet and greets?
@@blucky_yt i know of vr chat but i meant specifically something more like in this video, one person explaining a topic while another person draws and brings up stupid assets like that skull thing. something about this entire concept seems really fun to me + is probably lighter on the editing work required compared to a usual video like that. too bad tiltbrush doesn't seem to have multiplayer support :/

OH GOD THE AUDIO ITS NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Actually it’s fine enough

As a person who’s experienced lag in a vr game before, I can wholeheartedly say that tracking IS indeed of extreme importance.
The worst feeling is when you turn your head and you can see the boundaries between whats loaded and not

Okay this video with all the blunders was the *funniest video* you put out yet, please do more barely scripted VR stuff its amazing
Calling my rift the “ocular, ended of worlds” from now on
Speaking of VR, I'd love to see you do a video on the A.I. of phasmophobia, which has VR compatibility.
It's honestly pretty simple.
Each ghost has several passive phases they alternate between with varying consistency:
Idle - The ghost is doing nothing
Wander - The ghost picks a nearby possible point and moves to it.
Interact - The ghost uses a nearby non-throwable object, like a door
Throw - The ghost throws something
Ability - The ghost attempts to use its ability if it has one
Event - The ghost picks one of several allowed ghost events and physically manifests for a moment
Kick Power Interaction - The ghost specifically interacts with the fusebox if it can
DOTS Wander - The ghost manifests in DOTS and wanders, only if it can
Hunt Start
When a ghost starts Hunting, they have three phases:
Wander - The ghost picks a spot to wander to in an attempt to find a target
Track - The ghost tries to pursue a target it lost line of sight with or heard a sound
Pursue - The ghost sees a potential target and will give pursuit relentlessly.

32:08 That jumpscare with the vr wearing skull and your reaction!
PRICELESS!!
god damn i love this, the free-form style, the casual comedy, it's great, outstanding
Summoning Salt and Tech Rules uploading within two days of each other??
That total break of character when he jumpscared himself wuth the big skull is killing me
Interesting video.
The skull scare was amazing lol great video! Educational, funny, excellent
"That is where the wire-pocalypse started happening"
His expression: XoX

(Sternly)"I'm a professional"
The VR presentation is awesome, I actually would like to see more videos like this
We need More Half-Life Alyx-type games.
That’s what’s Facebook is preparing, quoting Valve news network
no we need lower vr prices
@@DyoKasparov The Oculus Rift S is $400, the same price as most regular game consoles. Price is not that much of an issue right now.
36:00 Suuure having my controller slide diagonally away through a wall is totally accurate.
This is such a fun way of presenting the topic! I love it!!

22:25 Yep... I was one of the people who didn't have any issues. My DK2 could track so well, I moved it to the ceiling and gave myself 270 degrees of freedom standing VR. Oh, and the hand controllers? Razer Hydras. I still have both.
I need to see something like this where everyone is in a classroom or something and you just talk

Fun little tid bit that would've made drawing shapes a lot easier; Tilt Brush actually has guides for shapes! Basically you can spawn in a sphere or a square for instance, and your pen will snap onto the shape.
16:38 Is most likely my favorite line from Tech I think. Those computers was so damn big lol
@@dominateeye right? And with a matte laminate over it should increase durability of the paper
32:02 has probably my favorite scene in this video, lol. Real talk though, this is such a cool idea!
Next video:History of Hentai Games for NNN
“Future me, why don’t you go ahead and tell me which one is better!”
“ *both of them sound terrible* ”
“ *YEAH IT IS* ”
VR sounds like it would be super cool for playing D&D
Like helping you really visualize what you just did to that poor bandit by making you actually act out what you did
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels
Let's just hope Facebook's current stream of bad business decisions to force itself into the Quest 2 doesn't hurt the progress that's been made :/
Too late
