Hello again everyone! Yeah, I know, the camera quality is horrendous. I unfortunately found out on the day of recording that my usual lighting setup was out of order. I figured just going to the brightest part of the building and using my camera's low-lighting setting would be enough. Apparently it was not. 😅
Sorry about that! By the time I had found out, I had already rambled on for literally hours. What you're seeing is actually an extremely cut down version of the original recording to include only the most interesting parts. I literally have enough left over footage to create a part two or three of this if I was crazy enough to do it! I considered scrapping the video entirely due to the issues, but I figured this was still better than absolutely no content.
That being said, thanks for your understanding and patience as I work on the next video. I think it'll be something all of you will really enjoy!

This reminds me a lot - Nintendo didn’t have patches for ages, but they DID have a shitload of DLC that you got from connecting two games together - odd as they are in this regard, the Pokemon games are notorious for this, as well as the Legend of Zelda Oracle games. But there’s actually a really awesome and unknown example of this out there which is almost blatantly in defiance of patch rules, and it’s really fun to talk about because it only game out in Japan.
Super Robot Wars 64 is a MASSIVE fucking game. In terms of pure content, I think it's probably the biggest game in the franchise in general, and if it's not then it's really close. There are so many permutations of the four protagonists, the many routes, their many sub routes, and secrets and such that it's frankly absurd. But hidden in the cartridge are a bunch of things that even in this game didn't show off at first, and I suppose it's to be expected that in a crossover game like this they'd hide literal entire series.
So how did you get them? Easy. On the GB at the time, there was a game called Super Robot Wars Link Battler. It was an... alright puzzle game, if nothing totally special. But it had bare bones versions of a lot of stuff 64 had, and it also happened to have three whole series that weren't in 64. And if you connected Link Battler to 64, well, the two games would trade content off, and suddenly you'd end up with Zambot 3, Goshogun, and Gundam F91 (with the Vigna Ghina) and all their pilots along for the ride on your copy of 64.
And this wasn't a minor thing, too. They went ALL OUT. Each series has its own theme, which shows up in the frigging karaoke mode. The two pilots from F91 have a Love bonus (additional damage if they're next to each other) and as UC pilots, half the game's units are usable by them - and their units, which are solid in the early game, are usable by anyone else. Goshogun has a secret move that you can unlock by upgrading it correctly. And Zambot 3 can decombine into its components, one of which has its own transformation, AND it has a combination attack with a different robot in the game (64 was the first game in the franchise with combos and they went nuts on them). On top of that, they join you through a side stage that happens to be able to change depending on which ones you get.
Link Battler, meanwhile, can grab the 64 protagonists from 64, and can additionally give pilots in 64 extra levels, which is meant to play off that game's scaling level curve to allow for more interesting high level gameplay well earlier than intended. It's fun as fuck.

Ah, okay, so it _did_ provide a defensive benefit in some way. Thank you for clarifying. TR should add that info to the pinned comment.
It doesn't surprise me that it worked like that. It was a feature the game was never originally designed to have or conceived of as having - the DLC was thrown together in a short time as a crude remedy to the problem of bandits ignoring you and focusing on your horse. And substituting one NPC for a modified copy is a fairly common workaround hack.

What's funny is another part of GBA dlc that was missed: Mystery Gift and Pokemon events. Gen 3 event items for the Old Sea Map, Mystic and Aurora tickets. Essentially little bits of code sent to the cartridge as a key to cause the coded event chain to start and to alter the flag in the save data. And then the normal event transfer and downloads which existed back in Gen 1 with the Mew events and competitions.
Even trading in general, the transfer of data from one cartridge to another counts as DLC with an upload and download exchange of content.

Actually, now I'm wondering if it was stealth included somehow in the Gen IV games, in Pal Park. I mean, I doubt it, but I can't shake the question now...

There was another way to softlock your game in Twilight Princess, with a similar saving issue. There was a large bridge that you would need to teleport elsewhere in the game. If you teleported the bridge, but saved before leaving the area, you would reload on the wrong side of the now missing bridge, and would be unable to continue.

    Hi rulez :D
(GBA)Cartridges were ROM mostly, so that patch must have been downloaded on the save chip(EEPROM?), either by modifying some value about the time counter variable or, as some guys have done with older Pokemon games, by installing subrutine that reset the value each time it reaches 1 year.
It would be very interesting to know seeing the limitations of the hardware...

    • @Naixatloz
      @Naixatloz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Short answer: The patch modifies a time counter variable, which in theory should prevent the glitch from ever recurring (in practice, there are circumstances that can cause it a second time).
Long answer: Basically, the game stores the time both as a date in a clock inside the cartridge, and as a numerical value in the save file. There's a conversion function in the code that will turn the date into the numerical value the save file uses. When the cartridge clock's date rolls over, _and_ it converts into a number higher than the save file's current value, the save file's day counter increases by one and a new day starts in the game. If the clock's date ever converts to a value lower than the save file value (which can happen either due to a flaw in the conversion function, or a problem with the battery that powers the cartridge clock), the day counter doesn't change. The patch works by setting the cartridge clock to a date that - at the time the glitch was first being reported - would be greater than or equal to the save file value.

The E-Reader cards are very simple in that they send a coding instruction to the E-Reader itself & the GBA it's inside of that writes a simple program with text and functions to be used with the 2nd GBA. They're like printed Batch Files, barcodes or even QR codes now that just hold a long string of binary that gets translated. Then, the program that is created just alters the save file of the cartridge to adjust the calendar.

Online multiplayer 3D "dungeon" crawling on console with 3 people anywhere in the world in 2000! It was such a big deal at the time that they even put "Online" in the name of the game.
The Dreamcast really was too far ahead of its time. Microsoft ended up consulting Sega heavily when they were developing the Xbox (their first console).

I'm a little disappointed you didn't explain why the Magneto costume was removed from MVC3. The costume itself was based on an outfit Magneto wears in the House of M storyline which looks exactly like what Juan Carlos, King of Spain, wears in his official royal photograph. Either to avoid controversy or potential legal action from Spanish royalty, Capcom removed the costume altogether. The costume was even removed from the recent current gen port of UMVC3 which includes all costumes and both DLC characters. However, if you have the game on PC, you can simply mod the costume back in.

Some info about patches on the Wii:
Twilight Princess is the closest thing the Wii had about patches. Since it had a defective save file (and the added issue of buffer overflow in the horse naming box which allowed hacking), it patched the IOS the game uses to run the game. I am not certain about SS, but I think the Channel just fixed a value which was incorrectly ticked when you did things out of order and forced a system update which could uninstall mods that were inside. IOS is a small kernel the Wii use to "talk" to different aspects of the console, like storage, devices and so on. After that, the Wii has a similar issue to the Dreamcast, that is why it wasnt possible to patch games afterwards, the internal storage is really small even at the time (a little bit more than 512MB). They could have required expanded storage like the 360 did after the NXOE update, but I think they really avoided to use SD or USB storage because they coudnt control (like the Brawl's Stage Builder which is one of the entrypoints to hack the system) and to avoid confusion to a less techy audience the Wii targeted.

About the Dlc on disc thing for the ps3/360:
In Dark Souls 2, if you have full vanilla, no dlcs, you can still access dlc areas if you put your sign down in front of the place, people summon you and open the area. It only works in their worlds, in yours it remains locked. But it's still pretty neat

The werid thing about Skyward Sword is that it did have an update, at least for me it did. I have never played the game before and two months ago or so, I started it up, but then it gave me the message that I had to update it. And then it updated somehow... and then it started and everything was fine, well Link sometimes walks when I'm not pushing the analog stick but whatever.
And note that I have ever connected my Wii to the internet. Never the wi fi, never the LAN... There's a possible, reasonable explanation for it, but probably something you didn't mention and that I don't know of...

Horse armor DLC in Oblivion does effect your horse if I remember correctly. However it doesn't act as armor, in the damage resistance sense. It just adds more health to your horse. You have a choice between steel and elven armor. Both act and cost the same but look different. You also are able to get a free horse from it named "old nag". She is the weakest and slowest horse in Oblivion but she does her best!

The Wii couldn't patch retail discs, only WiiWare titles got updates or DLC. To fix the bugs in Twilight Princess and Metroid The Other M, you wouldn't mail them your game disc. You would mail them an SD card with your save file on it, which they would patch to fix the bug. You could mail Skyward Sword saves to them too, but they also released that WiiWare tool that you could use to fix it yourself.

  • @Spectere

It's not really "DLC" in the traditional sense, but staggered unlocks were occasionally used in arcade games. Anyone who has played on System 573-based DDR machines has likely come across this. Those older games didn't have any sort of online connectivity and contained a number of hidden songs. Some on-disc songs are only accessible using the roulette feature or on a specific stage number, but to be unlocked for general play the machine operator would have to enter a code in the service menu. It's also worth noting that the unlock flag is stored in battery backed RAM, so if the battery fails the unlock code has to be reentered every time the machine is booted. Fun.
Many modern arcade rhythm games are Internet-enabled and do support DLC, and even microtransactions in some cases (oh, Konami…).

If anyone's wondering what downloading stuff was like on dial-up, I remember normal speeds were around 6 kB per second. Comparing that to my WiFi getting generally 300 kB/s up to 1.2 MB/s... that's 50x slower than now on a bad day. Granted, files were smaller back then, too. But I also remember trying to get a private server of Ragnarok Online, and it saying it was going to take thousands of hours.

The fighting game analogy for the 360/PS3 actually had an even better example that was far more controversial than the costume bug in MVC3. Street Fighter x Tekken had PS3 exclusive DLC characters, I remember the main two being MegaMan and Pacman. They were on the disk but had to be redeemed, which I remember some people being frustrated with, but later found out that it had to be like that because the Xbox ALSO had them on disc, but completely lacked a way to unlock them whatsoever. I'm not even sure if they got put onto the Steam version. That debacle was a mess, and the game ended up being half baked on top of it.

Regarding Pokemon gen 3: it's not just berry trees-- Ruby and Sapphire's clock would just be completely messed up, preventing every other time-sensitive event such as Dept store sales and people who give you berries once per day. I remember talking to, uh, I think it was the Return/Frustration guy in Pacifidlog Town-- he gives you a TM once per week, I think, depending on how much your Pokemon likes you. Except instead of telling me to come back in 1-7 days, he'd give me some insane 5- or 6- digit number. It wasn't that you had to wait a whole year to make things work again; if you got RS at launch and got the glitch at the earliest point you could, you would STILL be waiting for that timer to go down. Crazy.

  • @thorgidogofthunder
    @thorgidogofthunder 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

worth noting that the berry update doesn't actually patch the glitch; it just sets the clock ahead to bypass it. this is why it needs to be re-applied if you start a new game.

I don't know if they patched it out on PC but a similar bug could be found in the PlayStation version of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. At one place, to open a door your sidekick needs to step on a stone. If you save at that point where your sidekick waits for you to solve the puzzle, when you load that save (or return from saving state), you see that she is stepping on the stone but the door doesn't open and she doesn't move whatever you do, basically preventing you from going forward.

You know, one odd thing is, MonolithSoft actually did something similar to Ninja Gaiden's patch DLC in the Torna Expansion of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It wasn't much major, just minor quality of life stuff like making the collection locations labelled on the world, but those were changes that didn't make it back to the original game. Which is wild, right? They implement legitimate improvements to an Expansion Pass alternate story, but fail to patch that in to the base game as part of it.

Not sure how prevalent game patches were on the Wii, but I know Call of Duty: Black Ops had it.
Call of Duty: Black Ops in general was pretty impressive for a multiplayer game. Since Nintendo didn't have a service like Xbox live, the game simply had a whole friends system built in to it. It let you add people you meet in lobbies, let you see who was online on the game, join or invite your friends to games (public and private) and it even let you send and read text messages from your friends.
