    It’s hard to believe that Pixar almost lost this entire movie through carelessness. It accidentally got deleted from their server and they didn’t yet know the value of having multiple backups. They got lucky because one programmer/animator had a copy at her house so she could work from home.

    god, we all miss the time Disney and Pixar made fake bloopers for their movies, they're so great XD
    The old guy who fixes Woody up is originally from one of Pixar's early shorts called Geri's Game, where it looks like it's two old men playing a wild game of chess until the end reveals that both sides were played by the same guy, I recommend checking the short out, it's really fun ^^

    when they tour the Buzz Lightyear aisle, Barbie mentions "short-sighted retailers did not order enough product to meet demand" for 1995. that's a jab at the ACTUAL retail line from the first movie; nobody ordered much because they didn't expect it to do well but it turned out to be a HUGE hit & everybody wanted toys based on the film but couldn't find them.

    • @FutureBereaAlumn
      @FutureBereaAlumn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      There was a similar issue with Star Wars toys after the first film. A lot of the earlier toys were repaints of existing models. (And it shows. They’re quite popular with collectors and hard to find) There was even a slab of cardboard (with the characters printed on it) they sold as a stand in. Anyone who bought it could turn it in to exchange for the actual toys once they had been created and distributed.

    • @niles8102

      Also, if you notice this movie franchise has NO Cabbage Patch Kids because they never got permissions from the heads of the company to use thier toys in the films, especially because when Cabbage Patch Kids came out in the late 80's the demand was too high to keep up with production and they did not want that to happen again upon Toy Storys release

    • @Adrianne519
      @Adrianne519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      That makes sense, when the first movie came out no one knew what to expect or how popular it would become, that's probably why the two main toys are brand new ones that they created, I mean you have potato head in there and such but the screen time is minimal compared to the next two films they're in.
      And the fact that Barbie is voiced by Ariel is awesome! I'm glad they gave her focus and made her a real character in the 3rd film, same voice too.

    • @mevb
      @mevb 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Mattle declined for two reasons. 1. The thought the movie would flop. 2. They didn't want Barbie to have a set personality. Originally in Toy Story 1, she was gonna be Woody's love interest and she had a tough as nails personality a la Sarah Connor from The Terminator. Since Mattle declined, they made Bo Peep Woody's girlfriend instead. Once TS were successful, they let Pixar use Barbie in the sequels.

    Barbie was voiced by Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel from The Little Mermaid. The smile blooper at the end is a nod to how the Disney Princesses at the parks have to smile all day.

    According to one of the writers: Woody is so extremely rare because he’s a prototype. He was supposed to be given out in a contest before the others were released. With Woody’s Roundup being canceled, he was the only one ever made. Andy’s day (also named Andy) had polio. The letter he wrote in was so heartwarming that he got Woody. The reason the dad isn’t around (and also the reason for the move) is because he had post polio syndrome and died. Woody has no idea about any of this because he was put away when Andy Sr. was little and came back out when Andy Jr. was about the same age. (You’ll likely have seen, though perhaps not noticed: there’s a picture of Andy on the wall where he has glasses on. Andy Jr. has no glasses that we know of. The “new” house is supposed to be the home Andy Sr. grew up in)
    Al is also partially based on Toy Reviewer Mike Mozart. (Who is the person who shared this story to the public. Pixar won’t verify this backstory these days, but it really fills in some gaps)
    It’s also rumored that Andy’s mom is Emily. (Notice Andy’s hat looks like Jessie’s hat, btw. Just with the lacing removed.)

    Another cool crossover in this movie is the old man who repaired Woody's arm. He's actually Geri from a Pixar short called "Geri's Game", about an old man playing a game of chess by himself. When he's opening up the different compartments in his case before working on Woody, there's one split second where he opens a drawer on there and it has chess pieces inside it, lol. You can find "Geri's Game" on TH-cam if you want to check it out, it's only about five minutes long. I love when Pixar, and Disney too, do cool crossovers like that.

    I think Prospector lied to Woody and Jessie about 'Woodys Finest Hour' being canceled, cos Woody turns on the tv to show Buzz and the others an episode of 'Woodys Roundup' and while they're talking you can at some point hear Jessie thanking Woody for saving them. The little speech and song marionette Woody does sounds like the opposite of the anti kid stuff Prospector was trying to put in their heads, so he lied about it. Sure enough Woody sees the kid hugging marionette Woody and hears the song then changes his mind.

    As the founder of Pixar said: It's not a matter of the quality of the graphics. If you have a solid story then anything goes! (One of his students made a short with simple clayfigures having a race downhill in vehicles made of gemometrical figures. If you can find it you'll know axactly what he meant!) (Also, Killer Bean is a great short made in Cinema 4D. Also great, thanks to the story)

    An interesting detail
    During jesse's flashback it goes from a western decor to a very 60s-70s psychedelic style
    So woody and the rest of his toyline are pretty old and antiques at the time of the movies which is like the 90s
    Lot of cool details if you look closely.

    An extra layer of pain. The toys are supposed to represent the parents and how their kids out grow them. Staying a toy or going to the museum is the same as chasing a dream to be loved by fans from a distance or to stay with your kids, fully knowing they will inevitably out grow your friendship.

    A dark moment you notice when you're older. When Jessie & the Prospector ask about Andy, it comes off like an abusive relationship accusation.
    Prospector asks Woody was he was in a yard sale because Andy broke (hurt) him.
    Woody gets nervous and quickly tries to defend that it was an accident, and Jessie sarcastically says Andy must really love him.

    The tones that are played when Buzz jumps the floating platforms is the theme from 2001: A Space Oddesy, better known as Also sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss.
    The voice of Zurg is Andrew Stanton, the co-director of A Bug's Life and then future director of Finding Nemo, Finding Dory and WALL-E, and this film's story men and writers. In the commentary he admitted that he had to do a lot of takes to say "I... am your father." to get it right.

    The canyon that Buzz flies through is the lake bed of Ant Island in A Bug's Life. The floating rocks were a computer error but John Lasseter thought the effect was cool so they kept it, though asked some of those to be animated so some of them are spinning (barely noticeable thanks to the action of the shot).

    I’m really glad you guys are enjoying The toy story franchise! To answe your question how a toy is comes to life. The toys are already alive but until they are actually played by a child they assume that the identity of their character is real. Like when buzz was first open he actually thought he was a real space ranger like the real buzz light year and it wasn’t till eventually later and after he tries to fly and get his arm broken that he realizes that he’s not the real person you are the toy ve rsion of him. This is also explained in a short film after Toy story 3 called Toy story dawn of the dinosaur. In which case woody, buzz. and another toy go to another kids house and it takes place after Christmas. The kid is so occupied with his new video game he hasn’t played with his new dinosaur toys so They are not aware that they’re actually toys they’re not the real characters.

    He says he was made in the late 1950s, so if we assume the first movie took place around 1995 when it was released and the third and fourth movies take place about 10-11 years later, that would make him about 40 years old in the first two movies, about 50 years old in the later two. The first three Toy Story films center on Woody's relationship with his kid, Andy. But while Andy was born in 1989, Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 4 both point out that Woody is a collectible toy from the 1950's. What was Woody's life like for the 40 years before he met Andy? The movies do not explicitly state the years in which they take place, which makes the Toy Story film timeline inexact. However, references within the films can date the first movie as taking place in 1995. This means that Andy, who is turning six in the first film, was born in 1989. Woody and Andy were friends from an early age, so Woody and Andy could have first met when Andy was a baby. When Al tries to buy Woody at the yard sale in Toy Story 2, Andy's mother apologizes and takes Woody back, saying that he is "an old family toy." Andy is only around eight years old in Toy Story 2, and as his mother identifies Woody as a family toy, rather than her son's toy, that seems to signal that Woody has been in the family's possession longer than Andy has been alive.
    In Toy Story 2, Woody remarks, "A record player! I haven't seen one of these in ages." It's unlikely that Andy would have had a record player in the 1990s, so this would indicate that Woody does have memories of his life before. It's likely that Woody was owned by one of Andy's parents when they were children. Some fan theories go deep into Andy's missing father, and hinge on the idea that Woody once belonged to him; because Andy associates Woody with his father, he is all the more attached to the toy.
    The difference between his previous owner(s) and Andy is that Woody was Andy's favorite toy, and the connection that they shared was special.

    Some people like part 3 I think they got lucky because people liked these movies growing up the story had potential but I didn’t think it was as good as the first 2 they really did a lot with the sequel that it just fit perfectly as an end and a lot of the original people that worked at the animation studio either died or retired after 2008
