He passed Step 3 well, rocked his ABSITE, worked his butt off, and proved himself well. I wouldn't recommend such a thing as a plan. It would be very rare to overcome such a record. I have a guy with low scores trying to get gen surg right now. I tried to get him to strengthen his application. After two transition years, he's not getting a categorical. I can almost guarantee it. He has done well, but really didn't strengthen his application at all. The program he is at won't even take him into categorical.

Many improperly trained people will not consider rare diseases in their differential, these are mediocre physicians and surgeons, of which we have many. I have heard attendings admonish residents for considering rare diseases, they are idiots. I have also seen attendings compelled to apologize to my residents for such idiocy. Not kidding. One might want to review Harvey, Bordley, Barondess: In making the diagnosis of the cause of illness in an individual case, calculations of probability have no meaning. The pertinent question is whether the disease is present or not. Whether it is rare or common does not change the odds in a single patient. ... If the diagnosis can be made on the basis of specific criteria, then these criteria are either fulfilled or not fulfilled. (Statistics apply to populations, not individuals. You can NEVER rule out something simply because it is rare.) If anybody training in medicine has trouble with such things, I am available by the hour. Too many physicians and surgeons do not understand evidence based care, nor standard of care. They often use use diagnosis and treatment algorithms or scoring systems primarily. Patients pay for such mediocrity with their lives. Such physicians and surgeons often admonish students and residents: "that on boards, let me show you how we really do it". They then show their pupil how to do "color by numbers", "menu driven" medicine. Idiots. I just helped a resident understand how to manage a patient correctly without calculating a TIMI score. She was told by an idiot cardiologist that she had to calculate the score to know how to manage the patient. He should hang up his stethoscope.

Thoughts on Osgood Schlatter and why it sometimes persists into adulthood? Some people end up surgically removing ossicles while the condition goes away for others.
Just learned about this during my Anatomy block. Apparently OSD persistence into adulthood is due to remnants of the bony fragments that were not replaced with cartilage during child/adolescent development. If OSD developed during this period, and it was left clinically/ surgically unresolved, the fragments embed themselves in the developed patellar tendon which causes the irritation and pain.
let's be real haha, the ortho 500 is not really a myth because they're usually the last line at any hospital for reductions, and boy do you need to workout to get a good reduction
ive never had any interest in going into anything medical, but its interesting to see what people who are interested have to go through to get the job. personally ive always been interested in trades like welding, fabrication and cad, and pretty much anything that has to do with working in a shop. so nice to know that the people who are probably eventually going to be working on me one day are well educated and competent!
I don't agree with the notion that " it's changing for the better " with more women in the field. Why is that exactly? Just to fill a quota? The specialty is very physically demanding so it's only natural for it to be more male dominated. That's not something negative at all, just a natural flow of things. Many other specialties are female domimated but you don't hear anyone saying that they need more men over there
It's definitely for the better, many patients, mostly female, don't feel safe or comfortable being operated on by males and prefer a female surgeon. It's got nothing to do with imaginary 'quotas'

This. I kept growing and now at 6'5 at 18, I still have severe joint pain due to Osgood Schlatter.
Just learned about this during my Anatomy block.
