We have been so pleased with our Carthago Motorhome we thought we would give a tour and show you why. The Large Motorhome Garage was a key buying consideration along with the spacious lounge and french style beds.Our Model is a Carthago C-Tourer T148H.
The essential extra's we had were:
Chassis Package
Comfort Package
Media Package
We also had an Awning and a Solar Panel fitted
I also fitted Gaslow myself which can be seen in one of our other videos from the channel
We bought "Katie" in November 2017. It is our first Motorhome, for the previous 10 years we have been keen campers. The British weather had been limiting our trips so we took the plunge into the world of Motor-homing.

Ingeniously designed layout, flawlessly executed by crafts(people)men. 12:35 The floor locker (and others) makes good use of an otherwise redundant space, the idea may have been borrowed from a ski locker on a boat. Carthago must have been very pleased to see this video posted. It's great to see you actually using your motorhome, so many become expensive drive ornaments.
The Magic Rat thank you so much! We love the layout and it suits our needs perfectly with the large heated garage ( ideal for skiing ⛷ when we get chance 😉) plus all the storage. My “gin palace” is the perfect use of storage, like you say. Also Keeps things cold in there too.. can see your thinking from a ski locker on a boat 👍🏼
The new 2020 liner for 2 is Gorgeous... have you seen it?
I do like the fittings on the doors and lockers. So many manufacturers scrimp on this but it makes a huge difference to the way things work.
Yes there is good attention to detail on these, have to say though a couple of the drawer locks for travelling have let us down occasionally with them opening in transit since making this video, I'm not sure if they have improved this on the later models or not. Cheers Peter...Andy&Michelle

I have this exact MH albeit a couple of years older. I picked it up 6 weeks ago from the dealer, drove it to my yard. And then the coronavirus pandemic kicked off and it hasn't moved since!! Gutted, had so many plans for trips this spring. Maybe might get away mid summer if we're lucky. Stay safe and well everyone.

I love the size of the garage. When we were looking at a motor home, a garage for a motorbike was the starting point.
So much storage space throughout. That's a great choice.

Wow. I am from the Uk and live in California. Over the years i have driven practically every kind of Motorhome in the US due to working with bands on the road. They just dont build motorhomes over here with this kind of quality and the thought process that the europeans do and i cant get my head around it. The closest to this would be Leisure travel vans and Pleasure way. I have even tried to see if i could buy one and ship it over and the anwser is no only if you intend to keep it here for a limited time and ship it back. Love you motorhome its beautiful. cheers all the best
Hi Andy, we've had quite a few comments from the States about our Motorhome. There's definitely a market out there for this type of Motorhome. We are planning to ship our Carthago over in the future to tour North America, we also have spoken to the manufacturer about the demand we are seeing but didn't know theres a law whereby you can only keep them there for a limited amount of time, thats interesting to know. What a fab MH I wish they did a drop down bed in caravans, it’s a great concept. So when do you go skiing? Looking forward to the next vlog. We are hoping to go Spain next year, without the caravan, and stay in a villa. Thanks for sharing, 👍🏼

The lady’s outfit matches her motorhome… the interior driver’s mirror is handy to work out what you forgot to secure when you hear the contents of a cupboard suddenly smash on the floor after you leave the campsite and are merrily driving down the road. Top quality rig, don’t come much better…

I have a Auto Trail Scout, this absolutely knocks spots off mine I love it. But thanks for SPOILING my van, I love my van. Lived in it for 8 years HAPPILY till I saw this. Now sob sob sniff I am saddened feeling DEPRESSED and I work in FORENSIC mantle health for 18 years and now THANKS to you two I know how all the patients feel sob sob sniff. THANKS Ray 😊, we really believe that it's not about the VAN, its the LIFE EXPERIENCES of the FRIENDS made and the PLACES discovered that these machines enable us to fulfil. Saying that a bit of luxury always helps 😀 The sliding screen came with the van as an optional extra so I'm sure its possible to have one retrospectiviely fitted, cheers...Andy&Michelle

It's all we've ever known, our first Motorhome but we are very happy with our choice, we chose well for our needs. The only downside is accessibility to those small coastal coves and parking near to our activities! Can't have the best of both worlds! Cheers...Andy&Michelle

Amazing how much storage there is. I thought the toilet looked cramped for a leg on the left hand side but it could have just been the camera angle? I was gobsmacked when the guest bed lowered with the cupboards.

Hi Andy and Michelle, thanks for all of your blogs, look forward to all of your adventures. I do have a question regarding your Carthago and it’s payload. We have been looking at the c-line T 4.9 LE on the merc. But not sure about it’s payload as we seam to have very similar equipment that we would want to take. We currently pull a twin axle caravan with similar payload but use the car to carry the extras. So how careful are you having to be when your on your travels. Regards Paul
Hi Paul, great to hear you are enjoying our vlogs 👍 Payload varies a lot between models, our MH is 3850, we are about 3600 with all our gear but add a full tank of water , some grey and that’s 3800 so getting close but still ok. Hope that helps.. Cheers Andy&Michelle
Great tour , Did I see EMTB’s in you garage? We are looking at buying a Motorhome now and have ebikes . Wondered how you handle charging them if staying off grid?
Tim Firth you certainly did see EMTBs, we haven’t needed to charge off grid yet but have bought an inverter to plug into the 12v socket if need be, friends of ours managed ok with this with two leisure batteries and solar 😀👍

He he he very very nice I assume its over three and a half tons (car licence) and you would need a "C" licence wow a wonderful motorhome stunning I like the bed as it can be either singles or a double? as my wife suffers with trap nerves in her leg at odd time and needs a spare bed where I cannot knock her leg? our old girl peggy has a double at the rear almost seven foot by seven foot and with a mattress topper is so comfy as your bed looks well done? best wishes Ken and Christine xxx

Hi John .. apologies for the long wait! Ive been searching for the information using our pack on the correct upholstery name but sadly can’t find it 😞
It’s a cream suede finish. Overall We have been very pleased with it apart from the “non suede” part now going a bit bobbly on the captain seats at the front. We do use cream throws over the seats to sit on in the seating area to prevent spills and marks too. (If you do mark them they have a protective coating which seems to work well though😉)
Super excited for you on purchasing a Carthago. We have been so pleased with ours in many ways. 🚐 They give a really comfortable, quiet ride.
When you buy yours, consider joining the “Carthago owners” FB group. A small cost but so much knowledge and very helpful people on there to help with any questions etc !

I like the German layout this is what we have in our motorhome, there's no denying the quality fixtures and fittings of a Carthago motorhome. Is it approximately 7.5 m in length?

You never mentioned the 0-60 nor indeed the top speed!! :-)...I assume the infinity pool is on the roof?
The 0-60 isn’t great tbh but once she reaches top speed she’s very comfortable🛋🛀, as for the infinity pool… she doesn’t have an infinity pool but an infinitely changing view out of the back door! 😀🏔🏞🏝🌊☀️ cheers…Andy&Michelle
No oven, how do you manage
We have a Remoska which will cook anything an oven can but ultimately an oven would be better, the only disadvantage would be the loss of kitchen cupboard space , cheers 😀
Hi.whats your thoughts on the differences between the merc chassis and the fiat or why did you choose the fiat above the merc ???¿
Hi David, there wasn't an option of the Merc chassis when we bought, having driven both if the budget is there then I would go for the Merc. Lots more power for the same cc and much of a more solid feel. Our manual fiat is fine and I've never struggled on a hill but if you do go for an auto fiat then the engine size upgrade is preferable. I saw comments on a similar motorhome page just yesterday. They are crying out for these European style motorhomes in America and elsewhere. Maybe others would like to respond to that, either yay or nay?

what weight are you and how do you keep it under the limit?
Hi Geoff, we are 3850kg (originally 3500kg but uprated to get extra payload) we never travel with a full tank of water or much waste and this keeps us at about 3700kg. @@ExtremeMotorhomingAdventures High Andy & Michelle. I had the van weighed today with me in the driving seat. We were normally loaded with 1/2 tank of fuel, 2x6g calor bottles(one empty) and no water and with normal camping stuff in the garage. The previous owner, who is a friend, never had it weighed but had fitted extras--- tow bar, spare wheel, drop down bed, extra leisure battery, solar panel and satellite dish. So to tour we would add--- my wife, clothes, food and drink and 2 x bikes on tow bar bike carrier. We weighed today 3660kg ! The reason I wanted to investigate weight is that I have van booked in to have gaslow system fitted and was planning on 2 x 11kg bottles!!!. I think I am now going for either 2 x6kg or 1 x11 & 1 x6. Did the weight change affect your insurance? Looks like we will need to uprate to 4000kg
Hi, no the weight didn't affect the insurance and the road tax actually went down as it is now classed as PHGV. The only downside financially is higher tolls in Austria / Switzerland etc. We have 1x11kg Gasflow, we will be fitting another 11kg when we start to travel in the ALPs in winter. Below are the uprate options we were offered.....
We should have a couple of uprate options that we can offer on your vehicle.
The first option, to uprate to 3850kg, does not require any mechanical changes and the axle weights remain unchanged at 1850kg, 2000kg.
The second uprate option is to take the gross weight to 3850kg with uprated rear axle capacity to 2240kg.
This uprate requires you have rear axle air assisted suspension fit and a change of rear tyres to 225/70R15 with a 112 load rating.
Before choosing any of the above uprate options, I would first recommend you have your motorhome weighed and check the individual axle loadings.
Once you have these figures, you will be able to see which uprate option best covers your requirement.
If choosing the second option you would need to source the air assist system and supply evidence of this having been fit. (we can supply details of suppliers if required).
The cost for us to cover the uprate to any of the above weights is £260+VAT and includes the new plate for the vehicle and the necessary paperwork to allow you to get the registration document changed.
As the gross weight will be going above 3500kg, the taxation class will change from PLG to PHGV. This change will need making at DVLA Swansea, who will supply you with a new log book.
Unfortunately we cannot make the change to the logbook and deal with DVLA, as this must be carried out by the registered keeper.
Please be aware that DVLA Swansea are taking up to 5 weeks to carry out the logbook change, so please plan the best time to make this change if travelling abroad.
You will received a full instruction sheet detailing the changes to be made on the logbook along with the necessary forms to allow you to change the tax class.
The important things to bear in mind when uprating above 3500kg are as follows:
Going above 3500kg requires a C1 category Licence holder to drive. Drivers having passed their test prior to 1997 usually have this as standard.
On reaching 70 years of age, you will need to take a medical test to continue to drive over 3500kg. DVLA forms D2 & D4.
For medical letters you may wish to consider www.doctorsonwheels.co.uk, who offer a cheaper alternative to GP charges.
Speed limits in Europe are lower for Motorhomes over 3500kg. In most cases, you are unaffected by the weight change in the UK, as the UK work on the unladen weight not exceeding 3050kg.
You must inform your insurance company of the uprate (previous customers have not expericenced an increase)
The MOT class for Motorhomes/Motor Caravan is Class 4
You should check your recovery policy as some restrict European cover on motorhomes over 3500kg.

Hi Paul, its great to hear you are enjoying following our adventures, a comparable new van now would be about 90k we bought ours from Premium Motorhomes, there are several dealers around the uk who sell New and Used so I would suggest searching online. When you find a van I'd strongly advise checking the available payload, ours was a 3500kg van and with our bikes and 3 people we were weighing in at 3700kg so needed to uprate our van to 3850kg which cost us £2500. Quality will always out.Shows how poorly built most UK models are built ,and overpriced
Its not without its minor issues but I don't think any Motorhome is immune to a few faults. Travelling some of the roads in Scotland has shaken a couple more out but we are still really happy with our choice, Cheers..Andy&Michelle
