Fun fact: Shirahama once said that she was inspired to write this story because a friend told her that "She was born with the talent to draw". Shirahama, wanting to explain that drawing is not something you're born with but a skill you hone with practice, started writting the ideas for the manga.
Sounds dumb, it seems to imply talent and practice are an either/or instead of talented person that works hard will outdo a not talented person that works hard.
@dpolaristar4634 that requires there to be a metric on art for something to be "outdone". In this video, we see two of the most popular animanga of all time in One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100. Those series do take a lot of work in spite of what they look like, and they have a lot of success. All "talent" does is give you a first step ahead of the game, but the game can be played by anyone, and anyone can succeed in the game, but it's hard, and it takes work, and that work doesn't feel great when you feel "lesser" but who defines what "looks good" other than the person looking at it? Putting a metric on art will only lead to problems, so just don't start.
@@dpolaristar4634 the problem of assigning a value judgement to art aside, if you never pick up a pen and actually draw it doesn't matter how talented you are. The point is that regardless of where you start the ONLY way to hone ANY skill is through hard work and determination; So often we, inadvertently or not, reduce the blood/sweat/tears of artists to "you're so talented" as if talent is the most important or only part of the equation

I swear, garnt and Geoff must be planning videos like this out. First frieren, now this? I'm glad they sold bundles of the manga on humble a few times. I've got like 8 volumes sitting around.

Gigguk just talked about this one too. Like he said, we might be in a Renaissance of fantasy anime at the moment with Delicious In Dungeon, Frieren and this.
One of my favourite parts of reading it was knowing the Dana Terrace, the creator of the Owl House, was a fan on the manga and going: huh! So that’s where she got that idea! Neat!

Dana terrace wasn't inspired by witch hat atelier, atleast not when it was first released. While witch hat atelier was first released in 2019 and owl house in 2020, it takes quite a few years for animation to be made so it would have been produced before 2019. More likely I think Dana terrace might have been inspired by Little Witch Academia but not completely sure about it.
This manga has some of the most complex ethical delemmas and politics i have ever seen i was honestly stuck on what i would do in almost every key dicison in the plot
One of my absolute favourite parts of the story is the brief scene at the start of the Silver Eve arc where Coco is asked a simple question and realises that she is incapable of asnwering neither yes nor no.
Omg yes! Especially in the most recent chapters. I really was able to imagine myself in those situations and couldn’t decide. It also makes me wonder what will happen in the future and what decisions they’ll make as they grow. I feel like you don’t see this level of complexity in books in general very often.

3:09 I literally just read these panels last night from my library copy of Witch Hat Atelier and stopped in my tracks to just appreciate it. It’s so gorgeous!
To me it will always be Nausicaa when I think of the most beautiful manga. You have already convinced me to read witch hat 2 minutes into this video. You win again, Geoff.
I should add... if something you want to read ISN'T at your local library, chances are they'll be willing to get it in for you if you request it. I did that with The Rose of Versailles (beautiful books I'd love to have it on my own bookshelf, but I just can't afford those 500 page hardcovers). And it seems it's popular enough that they don't regret getting it in either.
I saw the thumbnail and said DAMN FUCKIN RIGHT lmaoo. If anyone is interested in a deep dive into how the artist really flexes CONSTANTLY on page layout and compositons, the video by the channel Lines In Motion does an excellent job explaining
That video appeared in my recommendations! I am so excited to watch that as soon as I finish reading the volumes available!!!!!!! But it is so good i really don't want it to end!!!!
I've read only about a couple volumes of Witch Hat Atelier, but both it and Kaoru Mori's "A Bride's Story" stand as the only two manga that have consistently made me go "People can do that? People can draw like this?!" It's not just that they're beautifully detailed, it's also that their level of detail never distracts from the flow of each page.
I've caught up to Magus of the Library and i've seen a few people here and there mention it, the reason why not a lot of people might know it is it doesn't have a lot of chapters atm, there are only 34 chapters on the site i'm reading that's translated to English only, for Japanese it'd be more but yea not a lot currently. I will say though, there's a lot of reading to get through than you're usual Manga, it's very interesting so i'm liking it so far and the last chapter left off on a calm before the storm approach, hoping i dont have to wait too long for the next volume to release.
Shirahama has also started illustrating Pokemon cards debuting with Ninetales. This isn't the first time Creatures (the company behind the Pokemon TCG) has gotten high prolife artists and animators illustrating cards. To name a few, Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Flip Flappers, Look Back), Uki Atsuya (Cencoroll, Digimon Adventure Tri), and for a brief time Posuka Demizu (illustrator of The Promised Neverland) have illustrated cards for the TCG.
That's good to know! I collect pokemon cards, and I'd love to use her card as a bookmark for my physical Witch Hat volumes. I'll definitely chase that nintales card once the new set comes out.
I've started this manga last year, and I fully support this recent hype for my favourite ongoing manga. I am now committed to buy each and every physical volume that comes out because I trust that Shirahama can give me my money's worth every dang time. I would just open any volume of Witch Hat and stare at a page, mesmerized, for five minutes straight. That's how gorgeous this series is.
Coming from an artist, this is one of the most inspiring things i ever read. I really hope it gets popular with YA audiences they deserve to read something like this growing up
I love this manga! It's beautiful and the storytelling is awesome! They show the main character's inner conflict so well and the other characters too. They all have depth and are complicated. I always recommend this one to my friends.
AAHHH we just got back from a con where we cosplayed WHA!!! So excited for the anime to come out so the manga can gain more popularity because Shirahama's art is FANTASTIC!!! It never fails to be the most intricate and beautiful thing. And all the extra arts an outfits she draws them in ?!?!?! I want to make and wear them all forever
Great suggestion! I'm not even halfway through the series and just can't stop! Also, as a reminder, don't forget your local library! It very well might have these mangas literally for free. And since each volume is barely over an hour to read at a medium pace, it's nice to get for free. Full disclosure, I bought the first two then rented the rest. I know that's the opposite of what most people suggest. But I just wanted to get started, and the first volumes were more out of stock than the later ones. Plus now I can lend the first few to friends, and suggest they do the same thing as me, if they like it.
In his video on the series, Gigguk compared the magic system to computer programming, a comparison I think sticks well. There's been other fantasy series that approach magic this way, most notably _Miss Kobayashi's Dragon maid,_ but while that series' system feels like C++, _Witch Hat's_ feels a lot closer to Assembly. And if you understood that comparison, Geoff, you are a geek. In a good way.
Hell yes! I’m so glad to see more people finding out about WAH! A friend from high school introduced me and it basically rearranged my brain with the art style and story telling.
WHA is probably the only manga that has made me stop for minutes just to look and admire the art, it is without a doubt my favourita manga I have ever read, captivating.
After your other early recommendations *cough Frieren cough* I didn't need to watch past the first two minutes to be sold. Didn't want to watch the rest to avoid spoilers, but I let the video play muted in another tab to do my little part to help algo boost you and encourage others sold early to do the same.
Once you told me to go read it at 6:30, I did just that (but also, I turned off my sound and did other things so the video would play out to keep that retention up). Bless Thew and the work that you dhew. I'm always aiming your algorithm at the stars my man x
I think something that REALLY makes the manga work is that it manages to have its magic be metaphorical and clearly inspired by the joys and struggles of making art, while also allowing the consequences of magic in this world to take the spotlight when they need to without bungling the metaphor like so many other stories do.
OK guy, you are on deck. I just ordered the series based solely on your glowing recommendation (and the art from the manga) . Now if I am unhappy, will you accept responsibility? Nay! Well at least promise to pick up lunch.
I love the art of witch hat atelier, it's so beautiful. A part of ne dreads the anime adaptation cause the way panels are played with won't be able to be translated. But I am also ready to be proven wrong
I don't really read manga, but I was already looking forward to the anime. Knowing that you recommend it makes me even more excited about the anime. After all, you gave similar praise to Frieren and that one turned out to be a masterpiece (the #1 masterpiece, even).
I walked into my local independent book shop over the weekend and there was volume 1 of this series so I bought it based solely on this video recommendation. This has been an excellent choice.
What I love about Witch Hat Atelier is its complexity. No one side is fully correct, nor fully wrong, leading characters to question what *is* right and wrong. And each of the characters have so much depth poured into them, their own personality, story, and motivations, which make them feel so real and far more riveting. This manga is absolutely beautiful in so many ways.
So excited to have you talk about this manga! Witch Hat was something on my radar, but I usually wait for direct recommendations. You and Yazy always come through with the best recs!
I'm keeping my expectations in check for the adaptation since animating a one-to-one recreation of Shirahama's beautiful, exquisitely detailed work consistently for, I'm guessing, twenty-something episodes is an intimidating challenge. Still I want to believe Bug Films can handle it - and that they have learned from production issues on their first solo anime.
Clicked expecting this to be a video about Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni), considering how that manga ended this year in a blaze of eternal glory. But Witch Hat Atelier looks amazing indeed and something to bookmark for next year, so thanks for that.
The images of Brim Hat Coco look amazing to the point where you want to kind of see her picking one up. Even though you shouldn't. That being said, despite the cute artstyle some profoundly disturbing things happen.
Yessss!!!! I loved the page when they came across the festival!!!! and later, during a moment when someone burns pieces of paper the edges of the panel are wavering and burnt!!!!! stuff like that blows me away!!!!!
All that stuff you said was cool and all but the main reason everyone should read the manga and watch the anime is for the brushbugs. Absolute peak creature design.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! As an wannabe artist I was looking for a new manga to inspire me artistically while engaging in my level of fantasy! This is exactly what I was looking for!!! I will probably never be good but I can always dream and look for new inspiration!
I'm so glad I stumbled across this manga and was stoked to hear it would get an anime adaptation. I almost thought it wouldn't ever because the wood cut style is so incredibly detailed and rich. When I saw the trailer, I thought 'Oh man, they get it!'. I can't wait for it to come out!
YESSS as much as i'm excited for anime adaptations in general, i always get sad remembering that so many people are anime-only and won't give the original source material a chance, especially in cases of manga that are so impactful because of their format. (even in the cases of good adaptations, and not just bad adaptations of good stories - for example i think the anime for delicious in dungeon is absolutely fantastic, but imo it still can't compare to all the extra visual details and story content in the manga that the anime simply can't adapt.) thank u so much for making this video and hopefully inspiring more people to read wha!!!!!!
As someone who's been obsessed with WHA for the past two years, it brings me indescribable joy to see both Garnt and Geoff talking about it now. My face kinda hurts from smiling
Maybe watching two high praises would actually convince me to go and read this series... The first volume (Japanese) is available for free for a limited time on Bookwalker, I have it but still have to read it before it expires on September 7.
I've been reading this mangá since the start of the pandemic in 2020... I love everything about this mangá. Story, dilema, characters... Everything is so well assembled. And the Magical System is one of the best in every midia. Shirahama created a masterpiece.
Left a like and this comment for the algorithm. This has been on my radar for a long time but I never hopped in. Consider that changed! I'm off to start 😅 This looks stunning
It's seriously so good. It's so fun to look at. But it's also really fun to see how earlier in the story the eyes are so much more detailed, especially Qifrey (The guy with the really funny posing that makes him look like a sad kitten who was abandoned in a soaking wet cardboard box). His eyes were almost fully deyassified after a volume or two. Also I need to gush about how they interpret the Demons. Big spoiler, but the Demon that introduces the concept is a massive leech. This means that even though it isn't technically all that supernatural, it's still warded off from entering buildings by salt. That's so cool.
Oh lord, this manga is so gorgeous. One of those things better read than watched (first), that and 2.5d seductress (which looked so generic in anime form but so cultured in manga).
Bought this for my daughter and we are both now hooked. The story, the art, the ingenuity of the power system. Excellent read. Can't wait for the anime
This series was brought to my attention when I visited my friends back in June. My best friend’s partner handed me the first volume and just said “Turn to the last page of the first chapter.” And just like that I was hooked. I’m only up to volume 5, but plan on catching up as soon as I can. I will also be surprising them with the Japanese version of the first volume when I come back from my Japan trip in March.

I walked into my local independent book shop over the weekend and there was volume 1 of this series so I bought it based solely on this video recommendation. This has been an excellent choice.
Always nice to see more Witch Hat converts!
Your last video waxing poetic about this series I snapped and bought every English volume.
I love this manga and it's so great to hear you speak so eloquently about how beautiful and revolutionary this work is!
Just caught up to this masterpiece a few days ago and I'm so thrilled to see you share the magic with your audience! Incredible video as always ❤
I'm already convinced.. by Gigguk. But let me get hyped even more
Clicked expecting this to be a video about Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni), considering how that manga ended this year in a blaze of eternal glory.
Thanks for introducing me to this phenomenal work of artistry and imagination. Wow.
Yessss!!!! I loved the page when they came across the festival!!!! and later, during a moment when someone burns pieces of paper the edges of the panel are wavering and burnt!!!!! stuff like that blows me away!!!!!
Really sold this Jeff! Thanks
witch hat!!! glad to see the coverage of my favorite manga
All that stuff you said was cool and all but the main reason everyone should read the manga and watch the anime is for the brushbugs. Absolute peak creature design.
the first three issues are available at my library! now i just need to wait till my holds are ready!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! As an wannabe artist I was looking for a new manga to inspire me artistically while engaging in my level of fantasy! This is exactly what I was looking for!!! I will probably never be good but I can always dream and look for new inspiration!
2:23 is really all I needed to see to decide I must read this now
I'm so glad I stumbled across this manga and was stoked to hear it would get an anime adaptation. I almost thought it wouldn't ever because the wood cut style is so incredibly detailed and rich. When I saw the trailer, I thought 'Oh man, they get it!'. I can't wait for it to come out!
I started reading this because of you. What a solid recommendation. Thank you 👍
I was ashamed of myself for not knowing WHA until the anime trailer came. How did I never hear about the manga before?
Clearly us fans needed to be more vocal. 🤣
Dropshadow on panel gutters and a diegetic panel break? Dear God.
Edit: This, to me, is evocative of both Colleen Doran and Carla Speed McNeil.
Yea stared reading it long before it blew up, I feel like an OG. I'm happy it will get an anime
As someone who's been obsessed with WHA for the past two years, it brings me indescribable joy to see both Garnt and Geoff talking about it now. My face kinda hurts from smiling
This Manga has a HUGE influence on my own Art I am developing rn. I love it SO much ❤❤❤
I just got uptodate with this the other day! Absolutely stunning manga.
Maybe watching two high praises would actually convince me to go and read this series... The first volume (Japanese) is available for free for a limited time on Bookwalker, I have it but still have to read it before it expires on September 7.
You just convinced me to read it. Bought and started volume 1
I've been reading since volume 3 and I am estatic it's finally getting some notice. So so so very good
I've been reading this mangá since the start of the pandemic in 2020... I love everything about this mangá. Story, dilema, characters... Everything is so well assembled. And the Magical System is one of the best in every midia.
Shirahama created a masterpiece.
Dammit Geoff! My TBR is already a mile long, stop putting things at the top by showing how good they look!
Left a like and this comment for the algorithm. This has been on my radar for a long time but I never hopped in. Consider that changed! I'm off to start 😅 This looks stunning
it really is one of the prettiest comics I've ever read. the penwork and layout is impeccable.
DANG, but the manga and anime look amazing!
Oh lord, this manga is so gorgeous. One of those things better read than watched (first), that and 2.5d seductress (which looked so generic in anime form but so cultured in manga).
I added this to my amazon wishlist about 1/3 of the way through this video... Now, if only I weren't so insanely broke.
Bought this for my daughter and we are both now hooked. The story, the art, the ingenuity of the power system. Excellent read. Can't wait for the anime
This series was brought to my attention when I visited my friends back in June. My best friend’s partner handed me the first volume and just said “Turn to the last page of the first chapter.”
And just like that I was hooked. I’m only up to volume 5, but plan on catching up as soon as I can. I will also be surprising them with the Japanese version of the first volume when I come back from my Japan trip in March.
yess finally its starting to get crowd, there's a lot gem in manga sphere and if you're already tired there's no show to your liking try diving in manga world
Shirahama's art is a joy to look at--the only person's art I'd enjoy looking at more is Kaoru Mori's. I can't wait for this anime to come out already!
I just read this one the other day, and man what an excellent read. My only issue is that the brimhats are just... So much cooler looking lmao
Yes!!! Hype for Witch Hat Atelier!!!
I'mma go in blind so since I won't see the second half of the vid, here's a like and a comment. 🤙 Keep up the good work chief.
I own all the books already. Its an absolutely gorgeous and awe-inspiring masterpiece
I recommend that you read Magus of the Library it just as wonderful as Witch Hat Atelier.
Yes do the WORLD BUILDING of Witchhat! Please! For the Love of all that is beautiful.
"--let me give you an example--" me: the festival? the festival? *shows: festival spread* me: YES
