I'm waiting for the black vibram sole version, hopefully in the next drop to match my vibram soled Muggs. Then I'll have matching summer and winter versions of Muggs and smugs. 😁
I feel like this channel is single-handedly holding the boot industry accountable. To such a degree that I feel like boots that were garbage previously are increasing quality and craftsmanship so they don't end up on the wrong side of this specific TH-cam channel. Before Rose anvil I don't remember anyone really cutting boots in half to see what the inner construction is. Good job !
I literally stopped buying boots for a long time because of the enshitification of everything and I only started buying again because of this channel so maybe at least some manufacturers should be grateful this channel exists. With the exception of bates which I daily shit kick, I know they aren't the highest quality in the world but for the price they last well enough.
Please please please reconsider how you interpret the bar drop test. By your standards a solid piece of steel would perform pretty good. You only mesure the amount of energy transfered back to the bar. Energy absorbtion is pretty important to comfort... That why you car runs on spring and shocks. You are currently measuring if soles are a good spring, but It does not make them the equivalent of a good suspension system.
Yup it is the most useless test they do. Tbf I think that at least it doesn't take much time, and is also non-destructive. But as you said it is not meaningful in terms of what it is trying to showcase/measure (comfort, more or less), and additionally to just the material properties there are other meaningful vatiables influencing its results, e.g. how well the boot is held in place during impact, where the ball hits, the full surface area of the outsole etc... I just don't care about that test, but tbh they do not make a big deal out of its results so it doesn't bother me that much
Yes. According to their test a sorbothane insole would be useless yet it is amongst the most effective at absorbing shocks. It just has very little rebound energy.
Exactly, once I saw that I knew there was at most a wooden shank but probably nothing. And that’s what we got. They gotta start putting one in, until then solovair is objectively better all around
They were formerly fully leather lined. I had a pair when I was younger (I am nearly 60). I wore those shoes nearly daily for almost a decade, and finally wore a hole through the sole. I didn't know enough to have them resoled and threw them away, to my regret now. I have no doubt that if those shoes had been resoled, I would still be wearing them. When the soles wore through, the uppers had a good patina on them that could easily be maintained. Bummer. I would pay 350+ for a pair of shoes made like that. I loved that pair of shoes.
You actually can’t resole a doc Marten in the traditional way. Cause they heat seal it to the welt it makes it impossible unless you’ve got the right equipment. I refused to carry them when they moved production to east Asia because it was so cheaply made. My rule is this, I’m not selling anything I can’t resole, however if you want it badly enough I’ll order it. If I get enough demand for Docs or Solovair ( HH Grig company who originally made Doc Martens for years ) I might invest in the equipment to do resole work. Remember I like what I do but I’ve still gotta make money. Right now the stitchdown and GY welt boots are your bread and butter if you repair shoes
Have a look at William Lennon boots. Specifically the 78tc, if you customise the leather to black and not have the toe cap they'll look pretty similar to docs and be indestructible
One of the first boots I got for my fiancée were made in England docs. Glad it was her first, she loves them, and I know they will last a bit better than regular ones
this is just a reminder that we should be very grateful for weston and what hes done here with rose anvil. These are alright, but for $260 everyone here would much rather pickup the thursday challenger, a drews boot, a jim green. IE something with a leather midsole construction and value for more than a years wear.
JG doesn’t use a leather midsole typically unless your custom ordering. They use a polywoven unit that does mimic most of the better parts of leather, it just helps them control costs. The only one that uses leather as standard is special collaborations like the African Trooper, or the range topping Numzam boot. That being said JG will custom make you anything in their range with anything they offer in terms of parts. You just have to wait till they start doing custom orders again
@KC-kp4vh dunno? I was first wave punker dm's were for those who could afford to buy them or brazen enough to steal them... Definitely bougie compared to combat boots or chuck taylors. Ha! I stole my first pair, comfortable in the mosh pit but steel toes would have been welcomed. The leather was nice, I dont know how they changed except they got expensive and elitist.
Im really happy with my new dead stocks . Nice quality and comfort . Took them to my cobler and had him dye the inside panel a bit darker and it looks tops . He did a great job .
That leather does look nice ngl. A local cobbler will also resole these (though personally I'd be tempted to put a Vioram one on) but I do wish they would find a way to make that easier. Be nice for them to get their Made in England lineup back to being premium though. That said...
Don't worry about the pronunciation of Northamptonshire, you pronounced it perfectly, it just feels weird to hear an American say such a British location name.
As a server in the 80's who had to navigate wooden stairs with huge banquet trays filled with porcelain, I asked what shoes I should buy. Doc Martens of course. Had to buy a men's pair, but OMGOODNESS! THE BEATING THEY TOOK WAS AMAZING....and I had the for a decade. I could polish them up, but the wear was still noticeable. I threw them out when the 3 eyelets popped out. (4 eyelet). HAD I KNOWN I could have shipped them for repair, I would have done so. I will save for another pair made as well as 40+ years ago. I bought another pair after the co. sold off and the air pocket busted on a sharp rock. Sad.
Amazing stuff. I wonder if they watch your videos and take notes. I was looking for answer if Docs or Red Wings and I’m glad I got it. Keep up with those videos as I take a lot closer look on what I get. Wonder if you could get some Merrell shoes. Insoles looks rather weak but I wonder what’s inside some of the hiking stuff they do.
Thank you for the review. It would be great, if you could compare that dr martens boot with the Solovair 8 eye gaucho leather boot, as the solovair gaucho leather is good too. 👍
That's the same lug sole as the Docs I bought in the mid-late 90s. A pair of the 3 hole oxfords, and a pair of the boots. Unfortunately, the boots were lost during a cross country road trip almost 20 years ago.
My first pair of DMs I bought in 1973 from my paper round earnings. I still own several pairs but sad to see the decline in construction over the years.
I just came back from the mall tonight and two stores were selling China made Docs for $214! They should be made in England for that price. Lost interest in Docs overall as a brand. Would only pick up a pair on clearance or second hand.
Hey, Weston, I just bought two pairs of your kilties, and I love them with my two pair of iron rangers. Your customer service was great, too. I also wanted to buy a couple pair of boot laces, but your store is out! Please restock the boot laces.
I wonder how these compare to the CF Stead Docs that came out a few years back that looked like they were using the rambler leather. I loved the color contrast on those boots.
I got the CF Stead Stone Rambler leather on my Thursday Challenger boots and it a wonderful leather. But, the heel is another matter. I would like to see maybe a CF Stead video with all of their leathers on different boots and shoes. There are a lot of boots that use their leather.
It d be so interesting to be able to find very old doc martens to compare? By the way you should try that with all the big names? Look for vintage shoes and then review them vs their modern counterpart?
you should do a review of caligae, I know you cant get an authentic pair but you could do a historical analysis like you do on other historic footwear.
I just ordered a pair of these yesterday, didn't realise it was suede, do they require any special maintenance? I also hope the PVC outsole won't be too much of a drag
I have owned one pair of doc martens that were the popular gotta get version. Do not remember the model. They were the most uncomfortable boots I have ever owned. Gave them away and bought non since.
Just purchased a pair from the 1990s, trust me they are head and shoulders better. Plenty of vids showing splitting leather and soles worn with six month old modern MIE docs. My other older pair have had 15 years of use and are still not done. Only thing with the ones from the 1980/90s is the breaking in period, the leather is thick.
I have seen no proof that there has ever been a Dr Martin boot with proper boot materials. Even the highest quality Dr Martin you can get will still be an inferior improper boot.
Wollaston is "Wool in stund" The reason why the "new" boots aren't the same is the death toll in the shoe trade in Northamptonshire. Tax free there about £140, its not a bad price for this boot. When they were mass produced you could buy a pair of rejects ( factory seconds) for under £50 in todays money. Its why the punks and school kids use to wear them. Cheapest boot on the market !!! AI Overview
@EssenceofPureFlavor brand new from a shop called Shoe&co. Size 6 black boots with yellow stitching. Docs were not cool then, they were always cheap here (Scotland). Then the 00s came around and they were "cool" again so they yanked the price up, i was wearing timberlands by then anyway lol.

I used to buy shit like Blundstones and think the quality was insane before this channel lol.
I thought exactly the same. I think every boot maker knows about this channel by now.
@@Plague_Doc22 he reviewed blundstones and were not bad at all for the price

The band saw is the TRUTH SERUM FOR SHOES.
They were formerly fully leather lined. I had a pair when I was younger (I am nearly 60). I wore those shoes nearly daily for almost a decade, and finally wore a hole through the sole. CF Stead’s leathers are amazing. I have a pair of parkhurst boots in their rambler leather. Which is a waxed rough out of their shrunken suede.
Yet again doc Martien cannot comprehend putting in a wooden shank like they used too!

FYI CF Stead is also the primary supplier of suede to Adidas, which isn’t so far off from Nike really.

Are they still not putting Shanks in their Made in England line?
Have you done vintage docs before?
On the theme of English boots, can you do Grenson boots? Brady line if possible.
Yea I think the drop tests should be remove, or at the very least reinterpreted.
Spicy. Dude went in.

Still No Shank ... Is Solovair still Better?
I remember Made-In-England Docs being really good in the late '90s. Are they as good now, or worse?
Why not just start off as a rough out and sand down?
rick owen’s x drmarten quad pent needs to be testedd lolll

SO WHEN ARE YOU DOING CARHARTT CINCINNATI WORK BOOTS?
Is that a Brave Star Selvage Sawtooth shirt? I have some of their jeans. Premium stuff!

wtf is grain suede? sounds like nubuck to me. nubuck isn't suede. even though it looks similar and people confuse them. so I dont get it.
I think you are confusing suede leather with raw material waste (cull) called by many manufactured as "suede".
The bounce test makes no sense. Drop a baseball on a pillow, I want pillows under my feet...
Double h boots please
