Don't Tell Me You Love Me Solo Lesson

  • This is for educational purposes to demonstrate how to play Night Ranger's "Don't tell Me You love Me" guitar solo. Please purchase Night Ranger music from iTunes and other retailers.
Please note that I am playing the Watson arpeggios WRONG. I should be alternating the riff between the 1st and 2nd string with the first finger on each phrase. The last arpeggio the A# on the B string should be a B (12th fret). Thanks Bakerman for pointing this out :)

Ok so a few comments: 1) You are insane for even attempting this solo, 2) You are ridiculously talented to be able to play this solo so well, 3) You make everything look SO EASY, 4) Your lessons are very good and easy to follow, gives me hope that some day I might be able to play even a part of this solo (I would be happy to get through just the first part) 5) been following you here for a couple of years now, and you are hands-down one of the best out there (on here?) and always fun to watch!

Mark, I just saw this video for the first time. I didn't realize you did a lesson on this. One quick thing. Jeff is actually alternating strings on the first finger position every time, except the scale lick at the end of the first two patterns. He is going, E9 B7 E5 then E9 B7 B5 repeat twice then the scale pattern on E7 B9 B7 B5 (string/fret number). As he goes through each pattern, he continues the alternating his first finger on whichever fret it is on. 1st time on E string, 2nd time on B string, 3rd time on E string, 4th time on B string, etc. Thanks again for helping me with my AX8 not connecting to my computer. It was my old computer that was the issue, not my AX8.

Thanks for the lesson. I've been wanting to play that right for years (longer than I'd like to admit). Especially thanks for moving it along. Nothing annoys me more than someone breaking down a really difficult solo at a speed for people who learned how to play yesterday. I had it down after 2 or 3 times each section.

I got the left hand part, but the right hand technique is what Im trying to figure out on Jeff's solo.. It looks like at the beginning of the solo, during the 5, 7 and 9th fret on the high E and B string, you alternate which direction you pick the high E string. Sometimes from the bottom outer edge of the E string, others times from the B string side.

Yes, he alternates between the A on the first and the E on the second string. Also, I don't think that he changes positions on the second part. It can all be reached from the F#m box.

Nice video a d nice playing. It's a very difficult solo, especially Jeff's part. I only watched the part that covers the first half of Jeff's solo. Good stuff, but you didn't quite get it. You are correct that he picks it, not tap, but Jeff plays it as a sweep picking lick that starts on an up stroke. Jeff has this very unique right hand technique where he starts all of his runs with an up stroke instead of a down stroke, and holds the pick with rotated with the opposite edge hitting the strings than is typical. You can play the lick with a normal pick angle, but you have to sweep it with up strokes if you want it to sound like Jeff. Also you got some notes wrong. The lick cycles between two 3 note forms: the one you show, C# F# A, and then C# F# E over the F#m chord. The first two notes are played with an upstroke sweep, the third note played withe a down stroke. As you say, it ends with a 4 note, alternate picked, descending B G# F# E though again the first note, the B, is played with an upstroke. Note how the lick adds up to 16 total notes, with 4 sets of sweep triplets and the 4 note run. Also note that Joel H., an incredible guitar player who played in Night Ranger for a number of years doing Watson's parts, played the right notes but played the whole thing with alternate picking starting with a down stroke. Insanely difficult, but didn't sound right. Too staccato.

Jebus Mark, you almost make that look easy. I think I could learn to play the licks, my problem will be remembering all those details.
Thanks so much for doing this. This is my favorite song of the era precisely because of these solos. I gotta wonder though, how the hell do people sit around and figure out that kind of complexity against the chords. I can barely keep track of my blues scale. LOL
Hey I'm in So Cal, too. You give lessons? I could use a couple, I think, even though I'm an old man who's been playing forever. I think I developed some bad playing habits along the way. This could be my last chance to break them.
Two last things. You are a freaking' awesome player, so I can't believe there are only 102 comments here.
Lastly, a small technical thing. When you were playing up high the sound quality went to crap, and it sounds like your pic was hitting the pick up or something. Very weird. It's a shame it mars your great video, but I can still hear the notes so I guess it doesn't matter much.
Be well. Hope youvre staying healthy and doing well, as I noticed this was was 2012, esp. in the craziness of 2020, eh? (Keepvid's dead, btw. There are other down-loaders that work.) Hope you see this. LOL If you respond, I should get a notification.- Jstn

Jeff Watson pattern is wrong and too easy. Correct way is top string (high E): 9th, B string 7th , E string 5th-9th, B string 7th-5th. Thats the repeated pattern (you have the last 4 notes correct). Playing it the correct way is harder than triplets
