    That's a hell of a 16th birthday party, huh? Crucified by your friends while 9,000+ people are chanting DEATH DEATH DEATH.... This was meant to mark the end of Su's idol past and allowed her to be reborn as a metal goddess, which she totally is.
    There really wasn't any religious meaning for Babymetal, and they weren't trying to disrespect any group, it was just for show.
    This song was used for a long time to open their shows, and was how they introduced themselves. They say their name followed by desu, which means I am or we are, but the 'u' is silent, so it's Su-metal des, Yuimetal des, Moametal des, Babymetal des. They do a bit of a play on the word by sticking their tongue out a bit and making the 's' sound like a 'th'.

    • @rraymakers2
      @rraymakers2 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      actualy they're not chanting DEATH but DES. Des is japanese for "i am". Su metal DES means i am su metal. Babymetal DES means this is babymetal. But to make it look more metal they wrote death in the titrle instead of des.

    Song is actually called "BABYMETAL Death"
    The Concert's called "Legend 1997" (Su's Year of Birth)
    BABYMETAL Death! usually used as an opener, in which the girls actually just introduce themselves and the Band.
    Full Lyrics are: B - A- B - Y - M - E - T - A - L, I'm Su Metal, I'm Yui Metal, I'm Moa metal, We are BABYMETAL!
    (In Japanese they say "DESU" (I'm) because the "U" is not pronounced in Japanese it sounds like "Death")

    Awesome reaction man! This was the final encore for the Legend 1997 Apocalypse concert, held in honor of Su-metal's 16th birthday. It had a couple nods to Metallica in there, as you noticed. Their producer, Kobametal, is a big Metallica fan, obviously.

    • @autohmae

  • @road-runner
    @road-runner 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    And that was another great reaction, thanks!
    That concert was Legend 1997, SU-METAL 16th birthday party and took place on December 21st, 2013 at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba.
    Lyrics are quite simple: "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L" "SU-METAL desu", "YUIMETAL desu", "MOAMETAL desu", "BABYMETAL desu" "Death death death death death death..." etc Desu (the U is silent so it sounds like the English word "death", pretty much means "I am, you are, we are" so they were introducing themselves. This was usually an opening song but this time they used it as a closing number. The meaning of the whole thing is the sacrifice of SU-METAL, giving up her mortal life as a human and Idol to reborn as a metal Goddess.
    The beat at the intro and the final statue crumbling are homages to Metallica. The neckbrace thing is an homage to X-Japan
    See you next time!

    Babymetal have been around for a decade and they actually met and toured with Rob Zombie, Metallica, Jonathan Davis from Korn and Stone Sour. They even made a surprise cameo in Corey Taylor's music video and they performed live on stage with Rob Halford and wrote a song together with Dragonforce. They're pretty well known in the metal community. Their lead singer, Suzuka aka Su Metal won Rock Goddess Of The Year back in 2018. The accomplishments and the respect they received at such a young age (the girls are 21 and 23 by now) is impressive. And of course not forgetting the talents of the band themselves, The Kami Band. The Band Of Gods.

    I knew you'd love this one. It used to be their standard opening number. Sadly they haven't performed it since Yuimetal left and it's probably not coming back. The lyrics actually are in English in this one. The chanting spells out B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L and then they chant "Death" over and over. Then each of the girls says their name and "death", followed by all three saying "Babymetal Death".
    The song title is "Babymetal Death", but Japanese speakers can't really pronounce "th", so it ends up sounding like "dess". A standard way to introduce yourself in Japanese is to say your name and then "desu", so even though the title is technically "Babymetal Death", it comes out sounding like "Babymetal desu"; "We are Babymetal". So when they say "Sumetal death", "Yuimetal death", "Moametal death" it's just a round of introductions. A cute pun wrapped in the most metal of packages.
    The crucifixion isn't usually part of it though, they only crucify Su on special occasions (4 times now, I believe). In this case, it was the day after her 16th birthday, and earlier that year they had officially become an independent metal band rather than an idol group subunit. So the story behind this concert "Legend 1997" is about Suzuka Nakamoto the idol sacrificing her mortal existence to become a metal goddess.

    • @Jordan-Ramses
      @Jordan-Ramses 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Haha, well it does have Yui in the song lyrics. They have so many songs now. There are better ones than this that aren't making the setlist. Maybe they'll do a 3 day show and play every song.

    Homage for METALLICA for sure, and they actually are big fans of METALLICA, became opening band requested by METALLICA themselves, and even taught Gimme choco choreo to METALLICA backstage. You can google and will find many photos of them together having fun.
    The lyrics were actually pretty English,
    They were chanting B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L, SU-Metal death, Yui-Metal death, Moa-Metal death, alot of death chanting, and BabyMetal death. The fun fact is, death in Japanese is the homonim of desu, like (we are BabyMetal Or i am Su-Metal Etc) so basically this is usually an opening song from them while in this video was closing song to celebrate Su-Metal 16th birthday, yes this just a birthday party for her, crucified and her best friends and the crowd chanting death on her, how was that lol

    Just to be clear, the song title is 'BABYMETAL Death' ("BABYMETAL" is part of the title).
    The concert was 'Legend "1997" Su-metal Seitansai', often shortened to 'Legend 1997'.
    (Seitansai is "Holy birthday").
    While it was usually their show opener, for this concert it was the last song of a five song encore with the live Kami Band.

    Su has been sacrificed 4 times but it was only on the last one that they added fire to the symbol she was being sacrificed on. Talking of symbols, this is all symbolic and they used the crucifixion on the cross just to symbolise death and rebirth. No-one in the west would blink if it was a western Metal band using Japanese religious (Shinto) symbols and, as there are relatively few christians in Japan it is probably only offensive to Bible Belt folk. Thank god I'm an Atheist!. Yes, a good one to show to friends who doubt their Metal credentials! As Rob Zombie said after some of his fans accused him of not being Metal for liking them: "They roll harder than you" and "They have more energy than 90% of the bands we've played with."

      @@richdandanell2911 BABYMETAL DEATH is not offensive for me as a christian, but not for any of reasons You stated above (they are invalid criticism from the point of ignorance). No religion ever has verifiable evidence - this is the domain of science You try to force on morality/spirituality. @@piotrtoborek2442 Glad to hear you're all about free speech! I think that it's wrong to label an opposing opinion "uneducated" simply because you disagree with it. I have spent a lot of time looking into religion (over 20 years), and to me, what Rich has posted is very educated, he states nothing but facts. Sure, it could be nuanced by diluting the atrocities of slavery and genocide with some of the benevolence, but at the core, what he wrote is correct; Christianity IS divisive and offensive because like any other religion, it promotes tribalism. Just think about all the different Christian sects who vehemently disagree with each other, never mind with other religions, and think about the basic image representing Christianity, a man bleeding, nailed and tortured on a piece of wood, can't get more offensive than that. Also, saying "God bless you" to someone you KNOW doesn't believe in any god is pretty offensive. I understand it was said as a joke, but many Christian mean it when they say that because religious tribalism does that, it prevents the religious believer from really understanding what other people actually think and feel, or it dismisses them as ignorant and ill-advised because they don't believe in the same dogmas.
      That being said, I'm very glad we agree on a basic truth: "No religion ever has verifiable evidence". Without evidence, any claim can be dismissed, except religious claims which somehow gets a free pass because religions are nothing more that institutionalized superstitious beliefs. As such, we can do without them. There is absolutely nothing that a society can achieve through religion that could also be achieved without religion, except for negative things like bigoted claims and offensive laws against LGBTQ people, for that, religion is needed.

    • @piotrtoborek2442
      @piotrtoborek2442 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JGM0JGM My good person, thanks for taking time to reply :)
      I think You missed my point. I wasn't talking about "the genocides or slavery" comited by this or that church or sect. I was talking bout the first rule of christianity: "There is no greater love then when You give Your own life for Your brother to live". This is what true christians keep in mind all the time and it does not matter what coulor, race, sex or nationality this "brother" is...
      Then the "bleeding, tortured man on the cross" is personification of that rule and I do not see how it can be offensive for anyone - unless such person is unable to understand or worse purposefully misrepresents it. Also it is precisely explained by Your own words: "it prevents the religious believer from really understanding what other people actually think and feel" as it fits for non-belivers as well.
      For the last part: "There is absolutely nothing that a society can achieve through religion that could also be achieved without religion" I would sincerely want this to be true alas history has proven us wrong many times. Most people are too emotional (or even too stupid) for such thing to exist. It is an Utopia, which we may dream of but can't realistically achieve as tribalism and egoism in written deep into our gene code for thousand of years already.
      .
      PS. In order to clear the small misunderstanding: when I said "God bless You" to Rich I meant "May only the best possible things happen to You" or "May You become the ideal/prefered version of Yourself", there was neither joke nor ill intent there. So thank You for Your time and God bless You as well!

      "I think You missed my point. I wasn't talking about "the genocides or slavery" comited by this or that church or sect. "
      Neither was I, I was talking about the "word of God", the bible itself.
      "I was talking bout the first rule of christianity: "There is no greater love then when You give Your own life for Your brother to live"."
      That is YOUR interpretation, many Christians will say that some other rule is more important, like loving Jesus before anyone else, or fearing God, or some other dogma like that. Many christians denominations believe that acts are useless, only belief is important. So you kinda prove my point, religions are tribalistic, i.e divisive.
      I understand the cross and its meaning from a christian point of view, I see how you can find it meaningful. But to do that you have to accept so many baseless premises that to me, who doesn't accept those premises, it is a barbaric symbol.
      "when I said "God bless You" to Rich I meant "May only the best possible things happen to You"
      I never said there was ill intent.
      So why don't you say the latter? Why bring some imaginary being into the picture? If you say "God bless you" to me it's the same as if you said "May the Force be with you", it's meaningless gibberish. If you need to explain it, then use the explanation instead.
      "For the last part: "There is absolutely nothing that a society can achieve through religion that could also be achieved without religion" I would sincerely want this to be true alas history has proven us wrong many times."
      You didn't understand what I meant, my bad. I was saying that there isn't one positive action that has ever been performed in the name of religion (any religion) that could have also been performed without using religion as a driving factor. If you think I'm wrong, give me an example.
      However, the opposite doesn't hold, many negative actions have been performed only because religion was the driving factor.

    If you ask the girls who is there musical influence, they will say with a big smile METALLICA. Metallica showed them how amazing metal music can be, and the girls respect them a lot. If you google METALLICA & BABYMETAL you will see some cool pics of them together and the time BABYMETAL opened up for METALLICA.
    BABYMETAL dreamed of some day opening up for the legendary metal group Metallica that dream came true at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. As one might expect from the trio, they absolutely rocked the stage! Kicking off Metallica's Seoul show on January 11, 2017, BABYMETAL opened the night with an explosive 6-song set.
    This should not work (CUTE= KAWAII+METAL= BABYMETAL ) but it does nicely. Welcome to the journey that is BABYMETAL, ENJOY THE RIDE..... If you ever get a chance to see them live ( DO IT ) you wont be sorry!!!!!

    You're on the party list now. There are some metalheads, that when they listen to this, still don't pick up on the One riff. That isn't them stealing it. This song is a straight up tribute to Metallica. This song actually isn't detuned at all. They're playing 7-string guitars. For One, Metallica is at standard tuning on a 6-string guitar, so their lowest note is E. For this, they are on a 7-string, so their lowest note is B.
    As far as the crucifixion, it wasn't a religious thing that they did. Keep in mind that the girls (Su, Moa, and Yui) were originally in a J-pop group called Sakura Gakuin. For lack of a better description, they have an age limit to be in that group, which Su was hitting that age limit and was going to 'graduate' from that group. As she was doing that group and Babymetal at the time (Babymetal started out as a subgroup of Sakura Gakuin), what she was doing here was sacrificing who she was (the person in Sakura Gakuin) to be reborn as Su-Metal, the queen, in their storyline/lore related to the Fox God. There is absolutely nothing western-world religious here at all.
    Also with this, since you picked up the riff as being a Metallica tribute, the ending is also a tribute. During Metallica's "...And Justice For All" tour back in 1988/1989, remember that statue of Doris (Lady Justice on the album cover)? They had that on their stage during every show, and at the end of the show, Doris' head would fall off. That is what happened here; you'll notice the head tilting, and then at the end with the last smoke, you'll see that the head is completely gone.
    And no, that is not the Statue of Mary; if I remember right, that was supposed to be Su.

  • @stevechevy3382
    @stevechevy3382 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    2 nods to Metallica the music and the statue breaking up at the end copies the Justice for all statue that would break up at the end of that concert tour. Babymetal knows how to do Epic. I tend to think that once explained, they used the religious visuals correctly. Death to be reborn to something new and better. I've offend wondered when is it gonna be Moa's turn? Moa seems to have taken to metal and runs with it every show.

    The translation of the opening clip is actually in the description of the video.
    Because I didn't see a comment explaining what happens here: This is Su's 16th birthday concert (or Seitansai, meaning something like "holy birthday"). The meaning of the performance is her shedding her Idol persona by "being sacrificed", only to be reborn as a metal goddess. Or in real life terms, BABYMETAL splitting with their original Idol group Sakura Gakuin because Su had to leave it earlier that year (age restrictions, you "graduate" when you graduate middle school). They crucified her, I think 5 times, on very special occasions and/or when there's a big change in lore, like this one (becoming independent) or at her 20th birthday show (coming of age in Japan, she's descending again as a "messiah" uniting the "metal spirits" to become The One). I'm an atheist but I don't think anyone should find anything offensive that happens at a show like this. Because that's what it is, a show. A Japanese one at that. I think I read somewhere only 15 - 20% of Japanese people are religious and most of them believe in buddhism or shintoism.
    BABYMETAL shows, especially early ones, are full of references and/or hommages. For example in this song, there's the Metallica - One intro, then there's the statue in the background which is from Metallica - ...and Justice for All, the neckbrace is an hommage to Yoshiki, drummer of legendary Japanese visual kei metal band X Japan, he needed a neckbrace when he performed because of injuries sustained from too much headbanging (he rather regularly collapsed at shows, too, because he just went all out all the time).

    Hello Ang I hope you are well. Well what a great show !! Musically I always highlight the guitarists and the drummer, although the bassist also of course ... musically they are very very good ... what a great show !!! And those of us who like rock and metal, boil our blood with this rhythm ... The only thing I didn't like is that they put religious aspects into it ... I'm not Catholic but I don't like it when they put crosses etc ... but it is part of the show ... but musically it has been spectacular ... Excellent reaction Ang !!!

    (Translation of the lore in front of this performance.)
    Legend 1997
    It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal,
    she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
    The gene which has been determined from ancient time
    is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time.
    The apocalypse prophesied the DOOMSDAY. Towards it,
    there remains...
    little time...
    Koba Metal, creator of BabyMetal is a huge X-Japan and Metallica fan.
    This concert Legend 1997 (Dec 21, 2013) coincide with Su Metal's birthday on Dec 20. The same year both BabyMetal became independent from idol group Sakura Gakuin and Su Metal graduated in March. So this crucifixion is symbolizing the end of Su Metal's life as an idol to become a full time Metal Queen. The breaking and collapse statue is an homage to Metallica "And Justice For All" live concert, where the Lady of Justice statue breaks, just like the Goddess statue breaks at the end of this performance., also shows the end of her idol life/persona.

    10:10 A valiant effort, trying to describe that feeling in words. Sure there are so many genres out there, to each their own, but only metal can achieve this kind of soaring power and blazing energy. Babymetal truly excels at capturing the essence of that and mixing it with, at a first glance, disparing genres without feeling them off. That's for me, the true feat and the true achievement from those girls. Great reaction :) Funny story with the CD Walkman (A.K.A. Discman xD) tho

    I don’t have epilepsy but I do get violently sick feeling with strobes and it gives me panic attacks. I was going to see bts until they got postponed. I went to see Korn and had to step out to the bathroom a few times and got made fun of by people as if I can’t help being sensory processing and still having motion sickness and strobe sensitive side effects from the Zoloft I took 6 years ago . Korn was awesome tho. I hope concerts open up in the next year or two even just small intimate ones. Also this song seems to go hardcore.
