Why the Toyota GR86 and Lotus Emira are More Similar Than You Think

  • In a world that increasingly values straight-line speed, I'm back on a Toyota GR86 exploring the parallels between this affordable sports car and my Lotus Emira. While both cars take very different paths, they both have a shared philosophy of prioritizing driver engagement over raw power, delivering a driving experience that connects the driver to the road. But how does the GR86, known for its playful dynamics and modest engine, stack up against the more upscale Emira? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

    Sad to see your 86 go! But I’m glad you picked something super exciting and fresh. Next we got to take these cars for an on track comparison! It was an honor to be featured in a video!

    Philosophically they’re similar but in practice I don’t feel it as much. If the GR86 had an engine with character like the ND2 and steering like the first gen then I’d feel like I had a cheaper Emira. But in its current state the engine in steering are just way off from an Emira. I wish there was a way to get hydraulic steering in a new sports car without having Emira money.

      Steering in second gen the biggest let down for the GR86, knowing where it was in first gen

      @@jubbalandcars it would be really interesting to hear why they changed it. If it was a SUV I could understand buyers complaining. But were first gen owners complaining about too much feel and vibration through the wheel? I really doubt it

      It's odd to say the ND2 engine has character, it's the most disappointing part of that car for me. The GR86 has a noticeably better top end.

    • @TT92348
      @TT92348 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@darksunrise8777 That’s the only time I’ve ever heard someone say that. Power sure, but character was a pretty consistent nod to the ND2. Even Mark and Jack said as much in their recent ND2 video.

      @darksunrise8777 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TT92348 Curious what makes the ND2 engine characterful to you? To me, it's just a regular inline 4. Torque starts rolling off early (4800 rpm). No vtec magic up top like an F20C1. Not an interesting engine layout or making power like an FA24. Don't get me wrong, seems like a decent engine, just not sure what gives it the character you're talking about.

    The question with the Emira is long term ownership hard. Lotus does not stock parts long term and its not sold in enough quantities. Additionally, the same things fail often on Lotus so those parts run out quickly after production ceases. Its a disposable car (the engine is solid).
    The 86 is a solid car to own long term, and the steering is precise but no feedback. Im keeping my hopes up for the steering improvements Mazda claims to have made to the 2024 MX5.

    @jubbalandcars been following closely as I am a current BRZ owner and have had the Emira on order for some time now (late summer delivery to new england). I'm starting to wonder if going with touring suspension was the right move. My organs are currently rearranged every time I go for a spirated drive in my '13 BRZ (fully stock) on the rough roads of my area and I test drove the Touring at the Lotus dealer and loved it, didn't feel like it gave up much, however, I was unable to back to back it with a sport suspension Emira... I was wondering if you had any thoughts having owned a BRZ, albeit a newer and better damped version.

    • @jubbalandcars
      @jubbalandcars  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Old BRZ and FRS very harsh. Newer ones more compliant. Emira is more comfortable. I would try both before committing to one. After driving both I don’t think the touring is worth the compromise for a car like this unless there are medical reasons or someone is much older

    I have very curvy backroads right of my driveway so the BRZ feels special whenever I drive it. Those roads are the reason I bought it.
    I think driving a manual on straight roads with a lot of lights would get old.

    If sliding around and enjoying the low limits of the car is an important factor in the decision between the GR86 and an ND2/ND3, does this specific comparison lean heavily in favor of the GR86? I'd imagine it's easier to encourage oversteer w/ the additional power/torque.
    Similarly, is there a good lower grip 18" tire similar to the primacy that you would suggest if finding a base model is difficult?
    Thanks and congrats on the Emira!

    Unfortunately, I think the loss of steering feel may come down to the diver assist nannys now available in the car, aka the Subaru eyesight system. Even if your car does not have this as an option, the steering system now has to be able to perform lane keep assist.

    The Emira is an amazing car and I've dreamed about owning one. However, I have read on line and seen some videos about teething problems that Lotus has had to deal with on the Emira. From ECU problems(causing limp mode), rear hatch problems (holding water), windshield wiper issues, interior A posts coming unglued, shift knob roughness on your palms due to etching etc. should not be happening at any car at any price let alone a vehicle that costs 100K or more. A GR86 or my 2022 BRZ do not have these issues and probably never will. So philosophically, they may have a similar goal. I'm just not so sure I would put up with these kinds of issue's in a car at that price point.

    Hes 100% right on the throttle delay in the 86, love the car but that annoyed the hell out of me from the moment I test drove it. Gave me a hell of a time downshifting initially. Pedal Commander resolved that issue big time, fortunately, but its one of the 2 or 3 weird decisions they made on what is otherwise such a driver focused car.

    Essentially they made the GR86s steering and ride more Lexus like for better daily driver appeal. Personally I'd like the old steering with a bit more sound proofing, as a GR86 and Lexus IS owner. Still a lot more hardcore and better handling than any Lexus mind you...

      No i understood what you said 100%. Vehicles are meant to be driven regardless of price point & the mindset of putting too much emphasis on protection from the elements reduces the enjoyment of overall ownership for what the vehicle was built for.
      Had you made this point while you were driving your own GR86, i probably wouldnt have pointed this out, but doing so in another persons car gives off the impression that its okay to beat on a car because of its price point.

      @@dougiefresh3075 you do know that the Emira is mostly an Evora and not a new car, also most of that development was done before Geely took over. What they actually did was fire the Evora team and scrap the work done on the ICE powered Eletre to redo it as electric. They also killed the Elise, and friends off early so they could retool the space used as the paint shop. Getting the Emira to market was a comedy of errors on what was mostly a finished product when Geely tool over.
