    Mark Kermode is a thoroughly nice man. I met him in Liverpool when he was doing a book signing and we chatted for a good ten minutes. He asked me what my favourite film is to which I replied Star Wars. When he asked me why, I replied that for its running time, it just makes me happy. He said that was the best answer he'd heard (because he doesn't like it). He said a lot of fans try to attribute some greater meaning to their enjoyment.
    Top bloke and well done on this performance.

  • @dan.100

    So many negative comments. This bloke is NOT a musician. He's a complete amateur playing in front of a professional orchestra and an audience. Well done Mark Kermode....good effort.

      In that case he should not play in public with a massive audience. Start in a club and practice!

    For such a small, humble instrument, it is intensely difficult! No electronics, buttons, switches, knobs, speakers.....all human technique. Beautiful.

    Here because of Kermode's book "How does it feel", which marvellously depicts the effort he went to in order to pull this off. That'll do, Mark. That'll do.

    Having read in Mark's book about the stress he put himself under for this performance I have to say I thought he did brilliantly. Great rendition of a difficult harmonica piece.

    I like Mark Kermode. He is the only film critic who's opinion I value.
    He has done a great job here. Probably the best version I have ever heard from a non-professional musician.
    Thanks Mark. Hope to hear more real soon.

  • @jhwalsh93

    This is an incredible effort from Mark. If you watch his Uncut video he basically gave himself around ten days to master this type of Harmonica. Certainly not a bad attempt.
    This piece of music is achingly beautiful, it really is. If someone where to ask me to define the word 'melancholy' I'd play them this song.

    A favourite tune of my late father's (1946-2018). I compiled this version (taken from the red button broadcast) onto a CD for him to play in the car. He rarely ejected it. It was also one of the songs played at his funeral last August, the other being Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good To Me So Far". A longer-than-lifetime legacy.

    Well frankly, I thought he did alright - people are simply being way too critical. I mean come on, give the guy a break - Kermode's a film critic, not a musician - what the hell are you expecting, Toots Theileman?! Takes guts standing up and performing in front of an audience like that when you're not an actual musician by trade, not to mention with a professional orchestra at one's back, and knowing you may likely hit a few bum notes. I can fully understand and appreciate his statement of relief at the end. But of course, there's always the inevitable cries of, "Worst version ever! Too many mistakes! Blah Blah, Bloody Blah." Seriously?! Give us YOUR version and then maybe we'll compare notes, eh? PErhaps a little more constructive critical comment, instead of the standard brevity of "This Sucks!", etc. It was, as someone else said below, a valiant effort, and full credit to him. He made a better go of it than I could. Cheers.

    • @VelvetVoice
      @VelvetVoice 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fair dues, Simon, I can't really disagree with you there - a far more carefully considered and justifiable criticism, which is more than I can say for some of the other monosyllabic vitriol on display elsewhere. :-)
