This is great dye, I've used it to dye disc golf discs and it works great. I also used the black rit dyemore to dye my light red ergon bar tape, turned it into a nice dark maroon color that matches my Poseidon Redwood color almost perfectly. Great stuff. PS I think A&W rootbeer is the winner for your hoods!
I started with some white silicone R8000 hoods ordered from AliExpress. I already had some of the Rit all-purpose dye from another project, so I thought I would test it. The colour did not take at all after 45min. Next, I tried the synthetic Rit dye, mixing Sandstone and Apricot to try to achieve an amber-gum colour. The result is quite good! I brought 2 litres of water to a high simmer, and added a teaspoon of dish detergent. I used 35ml (7 tsp) of the Sandstone dye, and 25ml (5 tsp) of the Apricot dye, and kept the hoods in the bath at a high simmer for two hours, stirring regularly. After one hour I had mostly achieved the colour, and had also boiled off about a litre of water. I topped up the pot to 2 litres and the second hour made the colour a little more rich. I don't know that this was really necessary, but I thought I'd try to see what would happen. The resulting colour is a warmer, slightly orange version of the TRP hoods in this video, which I am very happy with. I tried a second combination of colours, using 35ml (7 tsp) of Sandstone dye, 15ml (3 tsp) of Apricot dye, and 10ml (2 tsp) of Chocolate Brown dye on a second pair of white hoods. With this combination, I arrived at an "elastic band" colour is about 15 minutes, and then added a couple of more teaspoons each of Chocolate and Apricot to arrive at a slightly more brown-gum colour. Altogether, this was a very successful experiment, and now I have two great options for a more classic look. Thanks, @BikeSauce!
I'm more interested in knowing if anything happened to that very nice stainless pot you did this in. That looked like an All Clad or other quality pot, worth many times what some rubber hoods are worth. I know, I know, but I can't help it. I'm a cyclist but I'm also an avid home cook.
haven't watched the video yet but this is exactly the video 'm looking for. I've found plenty of videos about dying plastic but I'm trying to actually dye some white silicone brake lever grips brown to match the color scheme of my bike, hopefully your video helps me out.
dang that looks hella sick! Curious to see what long term duratbility looks like and also to see if it gets off over time and gets into hands maybe? But yea, my old 6700 hoods on my old bike were brown too from Hudz. New shifters are black and no aftermarket stuff yet so this has gotten me pretty intrigued
I've used dyed hoods for about 18 months. (I was the original commenter who mentioned using this style of rit lol) It doesn't come off on your hands but it will fade over time. When the lavender on my hoods got to be too light after about 8000km, I just re-dyed them!
I definitely prefer the colour the translucent hoods ended up, they look amazing! I wondered if maybe the translucent plastic is colourless to begin with so perhaps they design in a certain surface 'key' to take the blue or whatever colour they're going to use? So then it responds better to your dye too? Just a theory though :-)
rootbeer hood darker hood works better with the brown you have based on the colors i see on my monitor, however in person could be different. nice video surprised you dont have more subscribers well done. (not that you need my opinion for that, I would bet that you know the videos are good based on the time you put into them).
The true test will be of how did all that prolonged heat change the properties of the hood? Did it warp a bit? Maybe they've stretched some? And maybe they will have accelerated wear?
seem to be as pliable as before, and the fit on the shifter is great. My only concern is discoloration over time / dye transfer to skin, but initial reaction is color transfer is a non issue
I prefer the darker hood. It contrasts nicely with the bar tape and looks more premium in my opinion.
Dark hoods. Won't show dirt and look really premium like leather. Must say the light ones aren't bad either. Nice job. Thanks for sharing.
I’m sure you could get the lavender ones to look basically perfect by maybe mixing in some black dye with the brown
The leather may also get darker over time though
I'd go with the darker one.
Love how you didn't give up and got the result you wanted, however I was really itching to see the hoods installed on your build...
Next video on the outback will showcase!

This channel really lives up to its name.
😆 username checks out
Good point, if the hoods do a Giuliani on the first warm ride, you probably won’t want them.

Thats unexpected but an amazing result to be honest. I did not expect to be able to dye rubber that well after casting/molding is complete.

Haha it’s only an 8 min video.

Yea I’ll report back if it’s a fail

@@nicoletbn Sick! Good to know! Thanks!!!
@@nicoletbnthanks for the suggestion!
A&W Root Beer hoods for the win!
THAT'S AWESOME! 😎💯💯💯 A&W ROOTBEER! 👍
You truly have made bike sauce
I think you should've tried Angelus paint used for leather shoes. They have many colors available.
Amazing results! Root Beer all the way!
I know this for bikes for I’m trying on a Taurus judge revolver grip to see if works I like the black brown hopefully it’s turns out like that
Darker beown looks better, its distinct enough from the bar tape.
This is so cool!
Im not a Brooks fan, but wish my favorite saddle came in brown.
Maybe do that next!?
Those look great! I'm very surprised at the big difference in the end color between the two semi-translucent colors you started with!
Do you think dying a pair of clear or white translucent hoods may result in a less reddish color than the light blue ones?
Nice video -- do you happen to know what brand the bar tape is? Really like that color
Is brooks bar tape. Color is honey
have you thought of driling the brake levers yet?
And that is how you make homemade bike sauce. 🧑🍳
😆 best comment
Root beer will hide grease stains better.
Rootbeer ☑

A&W. Cos the leather tape will patina to darker shade.
Go with that frosty mug taste! A&W Root Beer all the way!

Dark. Please dye the white hoods. Great work!
Dark brown looks best, IMO.
Use one of each and see how they hold up.
Root beer is my vote 🤘🏽
Where's the Ritchey Outback? That was such a gorgeous build!
More videos coming!
Where do i find hoods for GRX 610 ?
A&W Rootbeer!
where did you get the translucent hoods?
Time for you to contract with someone to produce a couple of different hoods that are made to be dyed & team up with RIT.
A & W Root Beer color
curious to if it held up. i want to try and dye some grips
Still going strong. Slight fading where there’s lots of strain but not at the contact points
@@TheBikeSauce thanks, do you think it'll work on rubber grips?
Good question. I don’t see why not
I vote for A&W :)
Can you possibly try the dip on the grey hoods to see how that turns out please?
I actually did after this video went up. They turned out good. Pics and video on my IG page
@@TheBikeSauce Oh nice! Will take a look.
Ride one of each then another video on how they hold up
That’s the plan. Haven’t had any color transfer yet
Did you try dyeing the grey?
Very cool nonetheless
I actually did. It turned out somewhere between the two in this video. I put up an IG post that shows it. I may end up using that one
@@TheBikeSauce nice.
I'll have to try this out
Wanna sell off that bar end shifter? I’d be interested!
Wearther's root beer (if possible). Nice experiment.
Root beer hoods!
A&W hoods. They’ll hide any grime after usage
Do you regret just not getting a different colour bar tape to make it match? 😅
Bar tape had to match saddle 😆.
Why didn't you try to dye the grey one on your bike?
Actually I ended up trying it. It’s the thumbnail photo
100% A&W
the lighter brown
i was right YEEESSSSS
Root beer for sure
Of course. Why wouldn't you be able to do that? It is not a video game, you can do whatever you want lol
Dark one
+1 rootbeer
Yehaw!
A&W root beer.
I like A@W root beer
#teamrootbeer
Gotta be root beer. I hope it doesn’t make your hands brown when riding
Root beer
this is exactly how pocket knife nerds dye their plastic knife scales
You might be on to something here, making some money selling different color hoods? Why not? $
lol I hope you didn’t use the good pot. 😂
A$W.
