    Thanks for having me, Michael - I really enjoyed the conversation, and I'd love to do it again sometime! I think I'll have to figure out a better quality A/V setup next time, too. I'm always baffled when I go visit the offices of the biggest TV programmers and they have the absolute worst A/V equipment setups in their conference rooms, but now I feel like I'm the pot calling the kettle black!

    FANTASTIC an informative video with Philo CEO! A lot of insight to the future of Philo. I had Philo when Locast was still available and loved it. It was affordable and had the content I wanted. Unfortunately when Locast closed shop and I couldn't get local channels from an antenna, I moved on to TH-cam tv. THE local broadcasting channels should be forced to expand airwave broadcasting. It's not like their not making a ton of money! Keep up your great video's!

    Filo "was" a great add-on to YTTV at one point then YTTV added the "missing" content. The underlying problem with all cable TV is the forced package requirements from the OEM providers, these mega mergers are so incredibly anti-consumer.

    • @MichaelSaves
      @MichaelSaves  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree about the mergers being anti-consumer. And although it's a nice thought that the content partners would be more flexible, I'm waiting to see it in action.

      @DJaquithFL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MichaelSaves .. Disney is a good example of using its leverage for excessive price gouging. I can understand similar and overlapping content as a package, but having everything "at will" per channel granularity e.g. 100% per channel à la carte also can have its drawbacks to the OEM providers. Everyone would cancel them off-season or to binge watch via a click.

    Always interesting. For me Cord Cutting started out as a way to save money. But, over time what became more important to me is portability of content as I travel and not being locked into a long term contract. Granted though if TH-cam TV offered a 25% discount to sign up for a years service I would probably jump at it.

    6 months into Philo....It is working for us. One needs a guide to make cutting the cord easier. We transitioned from cable several yrs ago with playstation vue....then that ended so we went to youtube tv and that was pricey...but it had the guide...then it went up $25. Stopped that and went to Philo. It sucks that local channels that used to be free on a regular tv you have to pay for if you don't have an antenna...no rabbit ears will help.

    Excellent interview. You are helping me hack my way through the cord-cutters jungle. Michael mentioned much of what I am going through and I'm going to try Philo along with Frndly and an antenna and hope for the best. I see that Frndly has added METV which carries Dragnet and Adam 12 two of my favorites that are hard to find. One problem I have with my current service is with cloud DVR playback it doesn't show the screen so I have to estimate on where to resume the program. A minor pain.

      You can get it on HBO Max and with the Criterion Channel that would come under with $50 a month with a Philo subscription if you like classic entertainment. Of course as Andrew pointed out, bundling a package like that without raising the cost to customers is a challenge and a bundle offering like that would make a Philo a formidable streaming service in the industry. Like I pointed out, at the moment people have to build their own mix of live and on demand services that are a good fit for them without going back to the old cable TV model where you are forced to pay for channels you never watch.

    I've been considering Philo service since September. After watching this video, it's helped me to make the decision to sign up. My issue is...I had Comcast cable for years and I remember inquiring if at anytime in the future they would consider offering services/ packages that the consumer could add on, on a A la carte basis as opposed to paying for a package with tons of channels that you have no interest in. They have been "considering" this for years,but to no avail.....which is why I am now a proud cable cutter! My only issue is how will I live without my morning dose of the local news while having coffee?!

      It gets a little complicated. But basically a company like Disney (which has ESPN, ABC and others) will force the services to carry all of its networks in the base plan or it won't do a deal with them. Other content partners do the same thing. When Andrew talked about being able to have different types of bundles in the future, that would require flexibility that doesn't currently exist. T-Mobile tried it and ran into problems. But Andrew seems to believe that more flexibility may come as the shift to streaming continues and the content partners realize they could lose a segment of subscribers forever. I have a short video that goes into more detail on this issue: th-cam.com/video/XnsmYWsctSw/w-d-xo.html

    • @MichaelSaves
      @MichaelSaves  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t ask about the original programming, though it was on my list because of the deal they made. We went over the allotted time I had to speak with him. He was very generous with his time. Hopefully I can speak to him again and get to some of the other questions.

    • @andrewmccollumphiloceo6311
      @andrewmccollumphiloceo6311 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! Original content is a very competitive space right now. The big players like Netflix, Disney/Hulu, Amazon, etc., all spend billions (or tens of billions) of dollars a year on this content. So it's a tough game to break into without making big changes to what we do. We are trying some smaller experiments with original content, so we will see how that goes and maybe build on those efforts.
      The other challenge is that is essentially puts you in competition with your programming partners. Once you've invested in creating original content, there is a big incentive to get the most out of it by prioritizing it on the service, sometimes at the expense of other content that might be more interesting or relevant to subscribers. This is partly why, since getting into creating original content, the total amount (in hours) of content on Netflix has almost monotonically decreased over time, even as their number of subscribers and overall budget for content has ballooned.
      So not to say it's an area we would never go more deeply into, but we hope to grow to be a place where you can get all the best long-form entertainment content that's out, no matter who creates or licenses it.

      I have a video where I discuss this. I think about 95% of people don't go over their internet data caps. So if you have a larger household, you may. I'm wondering -- do you close out of your Roku after using it? This can set you over the limit quite easily. When my grandmother was living with my mom, they kept the TV on all night for her and went over the data cap. When they stopped doing this, they never had an issue again.

    Thanks for having him on Michael, it was informative. I have to admit his take on bundling being a constant, was a bit disheartening. I know he is correct for the forseeable future though. However, he is wrong about the consumers willingness to go a la carte, pick their favorite 5-7 channels, pay more per channel than bundling but less on their total bill. It may not be everyone, particularly in the first few years but over time it would become the norm. People understand their viewing habits enough to realize this and the content providers know it too, that is why it isn't an option.

      We'll have to agree to disagree! It's worth pointing out that for the past 5 years it has been the law in Canada that operators must offer all the channels a la carte. The price per channel is very high ($4-$7, last I looked) and most people elect to go with the bundled offerings instead.
      In my opinion, the criticisms about bundling are more about price/value rather than choice. No one says things like, "I really wish there was a music streaming service where I could choose which music labels I subscribed to a la carte", for example. The reason is that the price is fair, no one knows exactly which music label the songs they want to listen to are on, and it's easier to be able to just find what you want when you want without having to think too hard and possibly have to add a new option to your subscription when you just want to listen to a song.

I can’t get OTA signals so something like $0.99 Hulu for Fox and ABC prime time shows, Paramount Plus for $5.99 for CBS, Free Peacock Premium for NBC and VUit for my local news. I understand why they don't offer sports and news.... But CBS News and CBS sports should be included with Philo they're partial owners... And I do agree companies company should break up there bundles and offer channels individual.... Like Showtime could offer the movie channel Flix channel.... As a single movie package add-on... For like $3 because showtimes already bundled with Paramount Plus... And I don't think Philo will ever be able to compete with other streaming services... Until they find their niche which I think if they would add more movie channels it would be more appealing to people... They could add movieplex...

      Discovery is taking over the Time Warner empire but right now the main obstacle for Philo in carrying licensed entertainment content is being forced to also carry expensive news and sports channels. If they could choose something that fits what they’re doing now, they would go for it but if they have to pay carriage fees for channels their customers don’t want, that would put them in the 70-80 month range like DirecTV Stream and that’s not their business model.

      @@NormanF62 .. The underlying problem is the forced packages from the OEM providers and the cost of these mega mergers passed onto the consumer.

      Would be awesome for sure! Not without challenges, as others mention, but something we'd love to do.

    Ok look I love philo tv absolutely do you can't beat the price 25 dollars a month but I just had to cancel because I'm sick of waiting for philo to add TBS and TNT I'm a wrestling AEW fan and so for 10 dollars more I switched to sling at 35 a month I can at least get TBS and TNT trust me the day philo adds those 2 channels I will switch back

      @@andrewmccollumphiloceo6311 why don't you have tiers like you used to have . maybe the next tier could be the nbc universe channels and anougher tier could be the tbs channels costing $5 a month for each so if you don't want those channels you don't have to subscribe to those channels but give us a choice which pacages we want .thanks the cartoon network for adult swim would be nice .just to let you know i used to have fubo tv but when they pulled the turner networks off there system without even telling us as i was watching the adult swim channel and than right at 12 midnight poof is was gone .so nbc universe channels and the turnnner networks would be a great add to your service like i said at there own tiers

      @@hughreansbury7716 - I wish we could do exactly what you describe (though the prices would likely be higher), but the owners of those channels won't allow it, unfortunately, at any price.
      I agree that it would be awesome to add some of the NBCU and Turner channels to Philo if there was a way to do it economically.
