I was born and raised in Calgary. All my pals and I FREAKED OUT with joy when we got the Flames! I think it was summer of '79. I had an uncle take me to a ton of games in those days. We thought we had died and gone to heaven....."WE ARE IN THE BIG LEAGUES!!" I met Kent Nilsson one day, he came into the high-end stereo shop I worked in, I'm going to guess 1981. What I remember was how soft spoken and down to earth he was. He had no snooty airs about him at all. He was a beautiful player, so very skilled, but he didnt like the rough stuff, that's for sure. Fun trip down memory lane, thank you.

Former Colorado Rockies fan here, I even still wear my Rockies jerseys to current day Avs games down in Denver and meet up with others who do the same, the Rockies were'nt great but they got us into the Hockey mood and it never went away.....my jerseys are for Rob Ramage (5) and Lanny McDonald (9) but I had los of other favorite players on the team too....it was awesome to see those two players go on to win the Cup in 89 up in Calgary!
My dad has a Ron Francis autograph jersey, a Joel Quinniville hockey stick and autographs from the 94 WHALERS. He was at the last game with a few friends and it was a sad sight. NHL bring back the WHALERS...

I didn't realize Kent Nilsson came back and played a few games in 94-95. I'd always though Brad Marsh (retired in 1993) was the last ever ATL Flame. I can definitely say I learned something from this video, so thanks.
I'm a Montreal Canadiens' fan and although it makes me feel old to say this. you young folks really missed something special when the Hartford Whalers moved. That building was special and there was always a unique atmosphere there, no matter what time of year a game was taking place. But in the playoffs, wow! That was as loud a building as I have EVER heard in my life. I really miss those days!
Definitely! I was in Hartford a few months ago to see a Wolfpack game where the Whalers used to play and saw their whalers banners. Wish I could’ve been around in those days to watch!

Additional odd fact about Kent Nilsson; when the Atlanta Flames originally drafted him, they announced the wrong name; he was drafted as Torbjorn Nilsson who was, in fact, a soccer player. The Flames then drafted Kent Nilsson the next year using the correct name but had to draft him earlier. Watch "Kent Nilsson crossbar challenge" where a reporter put him on the spot during warm up and Kent scooped 5 pucks onto the ice near the blue line and proceeded to hit the crossbar with the first shot to the amazement of all, hanging his head and smiling sheepishly... a legend made BULLETPROOF!
I think the biggest problem with the Whalers was they were located in an area where most people were either Rangers, Islanders or Bruins fans to begin with.
They had white skates I belive. I think they were the only team to do that. Not 100% sure though. Enjoyed the video. I didn't know that Kent Neillson returned in the 90's. Cool info! If the Whale ever returns, we have to have the brass bonanza, and the crazy pants they wore. Fun Fact: Mark Messier was the last member of the WHA to retire from the NHL. He began his career with the Indianapolis Racers in 1978(the same team Gretzky played for) then the Cincinnati Stingers before being drafted to the Oilers when the WHA and NHL merged. Mess retired in 2004.
4:45 - "Magic Man" Kent Nilsson was indeed a very special player on the ice. His magic touch of puck-handling and skating was something of a very rare breed. But as said, Nilsson was not a player who wanted to be in the more dirty plays on the ice and played a hockey style that was both a winner and a leg-tripp at the same time. 10 seasons in NHL/WHL and was for a top level player producing fine numbers. He won a championship in 4 countries/5 leagues and was in the finals for 2 more; - Canada = 2-time WHA Avco Cup Champion & NHL Stanley Cup Champion. - Sweden = Elitserien champion (SM-guld). - Swizerland = National League Champion. - Italy = Serie A Champion. - Austria = Alpenliga finalist - Spain = LNHH finalist - Norway = 2nd place in season league.
The North Stars were plagued with attendance problems long before they moved to Dallas. My grandfather & my dad had season tickets for the Northstars their first 19 seasons. In the late 70s, the attendance was so bad that they almost folded. Instead, as you pointed out with the Barons, they merged with Cleveland. In the late 80s & into the end of the 90-91 season, attendance was also horrendous. The Gund Bros., who had owned the Barons & took control of the Northstars after their merger, where getting no help from the Metropolitan Sports Commission, who fleeces ownership of the Met Center from the original owners of the stars, with renovations to the Met Center and horrible management by Lou Nanne, they almost moved the Northstars to San Jose after the 89-90 season. Channel 5 News & the Star Tribune did a poll asking people if they cared if the North Stars would leave the Twin Cites....over 60% said no, they didn't care. The league did a deal with the Gund Bros. Giving them the San Jose market as an expansion team and take some North Stars player & prospects, thus de-merging the teams. With the North stars run to the finals in 90-91, plus a season ticket promo that season, something like buy 2 season tickets get 1 free for the remainder of that season plus the next season, attendance spiked. But when the promo ended and you'd now have to pay for the free ticket, and the team went back to it's losing ways, attendance plummeted again until Norm Green was allowed to move the team to Dallas. Once he announced that the team sold out their few remaining home games.
As a person in New York and having two teams within driving distance (the Islanders and the Rangers) I can't imagine not having a team nearby as a hockey fan or even worse, losing the team altogether.

It's been 25 years since the 1st incarnation of the Hartford Whalers played their last regular season home game at the Hartford Civic Center (now XL Center) before becoming currently known as the Carolina Hurricanes. On May 15, 2023, Anna and Olivia Melnyk, on behalf of their late father Eugene, will sell the Ottawa Senators to a Hartford-based ownership group led by real estate broker Ben Castonguay and hedge fund investor Cliff Asness for $975 million, including a $195 relocation fee. On June 20, 2023, the NHL board of governors will approve both the sale and relocation of the Senators in a 30-2 vote. As a result, the Seantors will move from Ottawa to Hartford to become the 2nd incarnation of the Hartford Whalers and play at the XL Center beginning in the 2023-24 NHL season.
regarding HoF for Doan, the thing is, there are so many players like him who would deserve it too so, while there could be arguments he should be in there, that would be "unfair" to hundreds of other players of his caliber.
Doan does not deserve to be in the HOF. His team never accomplished anything and 2012 was a fluke considering how quickly the team went back to its losing ways.
On your video you stated that the Kansas City Scouts had no on-ice success. This was a true statement but before anyone writes off Kansas City as a hockey town, take these facts into consideration. The Scouts and Washington Capitals came into existence in the NHL at a time when the rival World Hockey Association was taking players from NHL teams at a dramatic pace and paying huge dollars just to get decent to fringe players to jump leagues. Aside from this factor, the NHL had aggressively expanded in the proceeding years by adding 6 teams for the 1967-68 season, 2-more in 1970, 2-more in 1972 and 2-more in 1974. That's 12 teams over a 7-year span, PLUS what the WHA did. So where was the talent supposed to come from?!!! The Scouts and Capitals had very little left to build their teams and had no chance of being competitive until at least their 5th, 6th or 7th draft. The Scouts fan base (me being one of them) was actually starting to grow near the end of their 2nd season when they were bringing in larger crowds, despite a lengthy winless streak. I was part of a sellout crowd of 16,500 at Kemper Arena when the Scouts played to a 2-2 tie with the California Golden Seals on a night known as Merchant's Night. The atmosphere was outstanding that night and I knew then it could be that way on a regular basis had the team been good. Sports fans and hockey fans in Kansas City knew this was going to be a long-term growth type of proposition and the NHL powers that be at that time were of ZERO help to the ownership interests of Kansas City. If Gary Bettman was the NHL's commissioner back then (Clarence Campbell was in charge at that time and he didn't give a rip about expansion teams because they weren't the Leafs or the Canadiens) he would have stuck with the program and helped Kansas City to build and secure a fan base and a corporate base. The fans were/are there. They just needed a product to enjoy. Kansas Citians are not stupid people. They are kind, hard working people who know the value of a dollar. They are not going to throw good money at a bad product and that's the same way it is in every NHL city. KC never got a fair chance as the owners were pressured to sell out waaay too soon. Kansas City deserves a 2nd chance at an NHL team. Atlanta, Minnesota, the Bay Area, Winnipeg and Denver all got 2nd chances. Where's the 2nd chance for Kansas City NHL?!!! P.S. Quebec City should be getting strong consideration as well!
Yeah. A lot of these teams fell victim to stubborn management and poor decisions from the owners, it’s great to see there are people around who still remembers when their teams used to be around! I do feel bad that all of theses teams were moved and left their fans disappointed for that decision

Yep! It’s confusing, they first went by the California Seals, then changed to Oakland Seals, then to Bay Area Seals, to finally their last incarnation the California Golden Seals all in a span of 9 years 😅

Winnipeg is in Manitoba, not Alberta; the original Jets may have had problems, but being "the third team" in a province dominated by the Flames and Oilers wasn't among them.
I would not call some of these teams defunct. Defunct means no longer active. There are still some active teams. The Rockies became the Devils. The Nordiques became the Avalanche. The North Stars became the Stars. The Jets became the Coyotes. The Whalers became the Hurricanes.
Man, imagine the chances of the Jets in the 90's if (other than actually staying in Winnipeg) they retained Doan, Selanne, Tkachuk, Zhamnov, Khabibulin, Numminen, et al? Secondly, the Flames were not "always better" than the Jets. The Jets beat the Flames 2-1 in the 80's playoffs (85 & 87 wins with a loss in 86) Moreover, I believe following the 85 season the Jets won the majority of the regular season games the next three years. Obviously in 89 the Flames were outstanding. And finally before seeing the next video, I believe the last Thrashers players are Blake Wheeler, Andrew Ladd, Evander Kane and Zach Bogosian.
As of March of 2023 it looks like no teams are going to relocate for the 2023-24 season so forget about these teams coming back and there are no plans for future expansion
ive never been a huge hockey fan, but i liked some of these old teams better than some of todays , and its odd to me where some of the teams are and that these arent arounmd anymore, mostly the hartford whalers, much better jerseys and location than carolina , i also like better the north stars in minnesota than the wild.and i always liked the nordiques jerseys .! also think the arizona columbus nashville florida panthers , ducks, sharks, and he absolute worst vegas are terrible hockey locations and team looks .. (tampa bay is also strange location, but at least they got good name and look )
The league is always changing, I wasn’t around when these teams relocated but I was always fascinated by their Jerseys and unique design, it’s unfortunate that they were moved to a new city, especially when there was still a lot of support for the teams

Only one of these teams is defunct Seals/ Barons the Minnesota North Stars Atlanta Flames Kansas City Scouts Colorado Rockies Hartford Whalers original Winnipeg Jets are still in business and Quebec Nordiques
Cleveland Barons aren't defeuct. When they merged with the North Stars, the owners of the Barons became owners of the North Stars. After the 1989-1990 season they almost moved the North Stars to San Jose. The NHL came up with a solution. The NHL would give the owners the San Jose market and they would sell the north stars. They were also allowed to fleece the North Stars of players & prospects. Thus the North Stars also participated in the expansion draft after the 91 season. So in a way the leage de-merged the North Stars / Seals-Barons franchises with the creation of the San Jose Sharks.
Those team weren't defunct. They were relocated. Defunct teams stopped operating and folded. They ceased to exist after that.. Defunct and relocation are two different things.

As a person in New York and having two teams within driving distance (the Islanders and the Rangers) I can't imagine not having a team nearby as a hockey fan or even worse, losing the team altogether.
It is a something a lot of people back then had to go through, at least in today’s game teams are less likely to relocate

Correct! My video was of players who’ve were last active in the NHL, I am aware there were players who were still active overseas but wanted to focus on players who were still in the NHL level, but it is still a good fact to point out

On May 15, 2023, Anna and Olivia Melnyk, on behalf of their late father Eugene, will sell the Ottawa Senators to a Hartford-based ownership group led by real estate broker Ben Castonguay and hedge fund investor Cliff Asness for $975 million, including a $195 relocation fee. On June 20, 2023, the NHL board of governors will approve both the sale and relocation of the Senators in a 30-2 vote. As a result, the Seantors will move from Ottawa to Hartford to become the 2nd incarnation of the Hartford Whalers and play at the XL Center beginning in the 2023-24 NHL season.

regarding HoF for Doan, the thing is, there are so many players like him who would deserve it too so, while there could be arguments he should be in there, that would be "unfair" to hundreds of other players of his caliber.
Doan does not deserve to be in the HOF. His team never accomplished anything and 2012 was a fluke considering how quickly the team went back to its losing ways.

Back in the 80’s the European players in the NHL had a saying…”corners are for bus stops and postage stamps”.
On your video you stated that the Kansas City Scouts had no on-ice success. This was a true statement but before anyone writes off Kansas City as a hockey town, take these facts into consideration. The Scouts and Washington Capitals came into existence in the NHL at a time when the rival World Hockey Association was taking players from NHL teams at a dramatic pace and paying huge dollars just to get decent to fringe players to jump leagues. Aside from this factor, the NHL had aggressively expanded in the proceeding years by adding 6 teams for the 1967-68 season, 2-more in 1970, 2-more in 1972 and 2-more in 1974. That's 12 teams over a 7-year span, PLUS what the WHA did. So where was the talent supposed to come from?!!! The Scouts and Capitals had very little left to build their teams and had no chance of being competitive until at least their 5th, 6th or 7th draft. The Scouts fan base (me being one of them) was actually starting to grow near the end of their 2nd season when they were bringing in larger crowds, despite a lengthy winless streak. I was part of a sellout crowd of 16,500 at Kemper Arena when the Scouts played to a 2-2 tie with the California Golden Seals on a night known as Merchant's Night. The atmosphere was outstanding that night and I knew then it could be that way on a regular basis had the team been good. Sports fans and hockey fans in Kansas City knew this was going to be a long-term growth type of proposition and the NHL powers that be at that time were of ZERO help to the ownership interests of Kansas City. If Gary Bettman was the NHL's commissioner back then (Clarence Campbell was in charge at that time and he didn't give a rip about expansion teams because they weren't the Leafs or the Canadiens) he would have stuck with the program and helped Kansas City to build and secure a fan base and a corporate base. The fans were/are there. They just needed a product to enjoy. Kansas Citians are not stupid people. They are kind, hard working people who know the value of a dollar. They are not going to throw good money at a bad product and that's the same way it is in every NHL city. KC never got a fair chance as the owners were pressured to sell out waaay too soon.
Kansas City deserves a 2nd chance at an NHL team. Atlanta, Minnesota, the Bay Area, Winnipeg and Denver all got 2nd chances. Where's the 2nd chance for Kansas City NHL?!!!
P.S. Quebec City should be getting strong consideration as well!

Yeah. A lot of these teams fell victim to stubborn management and poor decisions from the owners, it’s great to see there are people around who still remembers when their teams used to be around! I do feel bad that all of theses teams were moved and left their fans disappointed for that decision

There was actually another player, Al MacAdam in the 76-77 season and then Dennis Maruk in 77-78 season 🙂

Yep! It’s confusing, they first went by the California Seals, then changed to Oakland Seals, then to Bay Area Seals, to finally their last incarnation the California Golden Seals all in a span of 9 years 😅

Defunct means no longer active.
There are still some active teams.
The Rockies became the Devils.
The Nordiques became the Avalanche.
The North Stars became the Stars.
The Jets became the Coyotes.

Man, imagine the chances of the Jets in the 90's if (other than actually staying in Winnipeg) they retained Doan, Selanne, Tkachuk, Zhamnov, Khabibulin, Numminen, et al? Secondly, the Flames were not "always better" than the Jets. The Jets beat the Flames 2-1 in the 80's playoffs (85 & 87 wins with a loss in 86) Moreover, I believe following the 85 season the Jets won the majority of the regular season games the next three years. Obviously in 89 the Flames were outstanding. And finally before seeing the next video, I believe the last Thrashers players are Blake Wheeler, Andrew Ladd, Evander Kane and Zach Bogosian.

As of March of 2023 it looks like no teams are going to relocate for the 2023-24 season so forget about these teams coming back and there are no plans for future expansion
ive never been a huge hockey fan, but i liked some of these old teams better than some of todays , and its odd to me where some of the teams are and that these arent arounmd anymore, mostly the hartford whalers, much better jerseys and location than carolina , i also like better the north stars in minnesota than the wild.and i always liked the nordiques jerseys .! also think the arizona columbus nashville florida panthers , ducks, sharks, and he absolute worst vegas are terrible hockey locations and team looks .. (tampa bay is also strange location, but at least they got good name and look )
The league is always changing, I wasn’t around when these teams relocated but I was always fascinated by their Jerseys and unique design, it’s unfortunate that they were moved to a new city, especially when there was still a lot of support for the teams

Cleveland Barons aren't defeuct. When they merged with the North Stars, the owners of the Barons became owners of the North Stars. After the 1989-1990 season they almost moved the North Stars to San Jose. The NHL came up with a solution. The NHL would give the owners the San Jose market and they would sell the north stars. They were also allowed to fleece the North Stars of players & prospects. Thus the North Stars also participated in the expansion draft after the 91 season. So in a way the leage de-merged the North Stars / Seals-Barons franchises with the creation of the San Jose Sharks.
The only defunct team since the 1940s was the Cleveland Barons. Every other team you called "defunct" is still playing in the league in another city.
Those team weren't defunct. They were relocated. Defunct teams stopped operating and folded. They ceased to exist after that.. Defunct and relocation are two different things.
