    one good thing ive noticed about this no buy year: I have tuned down the volume of like wanting things so much, and when i see something i really want in a store I don't think about buying it right then, I think to myself "But how awesome of a birthday gift that would be!" and put it on a birthday wish list. My no-buy takes a break for my birthday month because I refuse not to celebrate myself and how lucky i am to still be alive, but even so my wishlist is so small because of how refined my taste is getting.

     we don’t think you’re selfish because you want a homestead. It’s not like you’re spoiled and ignoring the good things you’ve been handed. You’re not squandering the life you have now. You’re thriving in it and still living simply. It’s something your regular viewers respect about you, that you have those things, those reach-for-the-stars, living-the-dreams things and yet you still dream of something simple, something better, something soft. If helps us as viewers with perspective, on what actually matters.
    We are looking at you like “look how nice and green her grass is”, and you’re looking at newzealand like, “I can’t wait, with all my soul, to grow more than just grass.”
    And I really think that’s a beautiful, profound way to look at life and don’t you dare for a single second feel guilty about it

    Hearing you! Stay the course - and you will get there. Your commitment to your ‘Why’ is so strong. I struggle with change of seasons also - so many ups and downs. My positive & gratitude is time to pursue my ‘hobbies’. Time in the garden, time with animals and handicrafts including sewing and crochet. I’ve so many supplies I don’t need to buy a thing and I’m producing lots!

    OK Grace, each day pick 3 things you MUST get done. You can still have your list of To Do’s, but by having only 3 on your MUST DO list, it’s not so overwhelming. Anything else you accomplish after these 3 are just gravy!!

    I started my low buy this year because I found your channel towards the end of last year, which motivated me to start, so a big thank you!
    One of the things that I stopped paying for was all my streaming subscriptions, and I feel that had the most positive outcome. It made me focus my time and energy towards hobbies that I previously had ‘no time’ for. Initially I felt very bored and lost, like I didn’t know what to do, but I’m drawing and reading regularly in the evenings now. I might not be able to join in conversations about the latest trending show, but seeing how much progress I’ve made in my drawings, or finally eating away at my TBR list is really rewarding!

    I'm doing a low buy this year, with about a dozen items on the green list because I truly need them, but I have named a month for each one. Still, I have not been doing too great, I've bought a couple unnecessary things, and a few more necessary but not completely unavoidable things. I try to restart every month and at least I am trying and for the first time ever tracking what I buy and what I would like to buy. Baby steps, next year will be better!

    I have noticed that if I don't buy the pointless thing, I have to money to do the much more valuable thing which comes out the blue a few days later. Incredibly helpful.
    It's really testing my values, and much like you I had been down this month, really down.And I realised I didn't make it clear to a friend what I can and cannot do/buy which explains alot so i was missing opportunities to do things 😂
    I have really been struggling mentally this month and really started to question this challenge because it began to feel restrictive for the frist time in months ( i did by a red item but i'm not going to beat myself up about it, cause its useful.) Im back on the low buy train and thankfully in a much better mood❤ bring on May!

    I keep "starting over" my no buy year because it's been a rough one so far and I'm doing very poorly dealing with it, but the thing I've noticed when I've succeeded during certain amount of time (maybe as little as one or two days) is that I feel way less overwhelmed, more in control, happier, like I'm accomplishing something good and important, for myself and for the planet. I actually like knowing I'm not expecting any packages so I don't have to stress about it. The opposite when failing (and I've been failing continuously): way more overwhelmed, out of control, sadder and like I'm a failure in general. I know I'm being too hard on myself so maybe I need to start working on that so my intention to stop buying stuff would be easier. Your videos help, Grace, they help a lot. And I hope May treats you better emotionally and in every single aspect. Big hug 🤗

    I thank you for your vulnerability. It's ok to feel the way you do. You definitely don't come across as spoiled when you wish for your homestead. You have a dream! You will get it! By doing wjat you are doing!❤

  • @catalinaserrano6098
    @catalinaserrano6098 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I admire that you allow yourself to be vulnerable on the camera. I thank you for that. Although I'm not neurodivergent, I see you in your description of being overwhelmed by a long to-do list and still "doing nothing". We all see you trying your best.
    I'm really glad I'm doing a no-buy this year. One of the positive things I've noticed is how the constant rumination of: should I buy it? just disappears when your default answer is: I'm not buying anything I don't need this year. Hannah Louise Poston mentions that in one of her videos and I've felt it. Another really good thing is that without buying, I'm understanding better the relationship I've had with money during the last decade or so.

  • @coolcat2424
    @coolcat2424 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    I really struggled with the no buy this month for the first time really since the year started - I think bc I had some vouchers which were great but kinda reintroduced me to buying unnecessary items, and the thing with vouchers is that you always have to spend a tiny bit - like a £15 voucher for something £15.99 would be fine, but i went kinda overboard with it lol, like oh £18 is fine bc I get money off, like no girl calm down.
    Anyway this is not important, I just wanted to say I'm grateful to you for staying so authentic online, it certainly makes me feel less alone in this world. And also that being frustrated that you're not yet where you want to be is totally valid, I'm dealing with the same thing rn but we'll get there

    • @gracenevitt
      @gracenevitt  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      it's really just a constant struggle!! and I'm happy to show the reality of that bc I don't feel that it's genuine when people just get to a certain point and then pretend to never struggle again. I've been a minimalist for almost a year and a half now and I still have moments where I feel weak about buying stuff. it's life!! but we absolutely got this.

    2nd comment on this video lol but I felt this video in my heart. I’m so sorry you had such a bad month. Whenever I am really struggling I sit down and try to identify things that have changed for my life, good or bad, and if that could have any affect on my day to day wellbeing. This whole month for me has been incredibly overstimulating or overwhelming. I’ve been hyper fixating on my cat’s health issues, so much so that I can’t relax. I just feel like I have to watch her constantly. I can’t stop hyper fixating. I just fixate on something for weeks on end and then move on to something else. And then for the last 4 days my city has been hosting a air show with the blue angels (jets) and we live close to the airport and they’ve been flying over my house LITERALLY every 15 mins from 8-4 since Thursday. The airshow finally ended yesterday at 4 and I just melted in my bed just soaking up the quiet. I almost cried from pure joy. I didn’t realize how over stimulated I was until it stopped. My cats were freaking out too, so that didn’t help.

    First, great job on the no-buy year. Super challenging but you’re sticking to it!
    I noticed you put a bunch of money towards savings/investing, but you are also paying off debt. I don’t know your debt situation or if you already considered this, but it would be wise to put everything you can towards your debt and just get rid of it. Then you can redirect all the money towards savings/investing.
    A lot of financial advice says to have $1000 of emergency savings to start and then redirect everything else towards debt. It’s the best way to “save” your future money. Even if the interest is tiny, it’s still money you’re giving away.

    • @gracenevitt
      @gracenevitt  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      very good advice!! my debt situation just changed, but otherwise I would 1000% be aggressively paying it off. I got a personal loan from a family member (bc they didn't want me to keep getting screwed by the interest fees each month) and I'm paying them back throughout the rest of this year at no interest! very grateful.

    All Hail, April Grace, Hunter-Yarnerer!
    Sorry you had such a rough April! I did succumb to some retail therapy myself. It wasn’t totally out of control, and they *were* things I would need along the line, like underwear and a pair of trousers to replace a worn-out one. But meh. Kinda bummed about it. My diet’s been crap too. Was looking forward to spring and getting out and about more, but had a financial/job set-back so that kinda threw me. #effingtryingmybestoutheretoo

      It’s a bit funny, we have pretty similar things going on right now. I’m obviously doing no buy with you but I’ve also started crocheting (went from one project to a granny square sweater - so no you aren’t crazy), I deleted all social media off my phone and iPad but am allowing myself to use the web browser (on my computer only!!!) if I need it. (It’s taken me a few months to actually feel like I’m starting not to rely on it. It was super challenging at first.” It’s honestly opened up a lot of time for me to either, do nothing or spend more time creatively (reading, crochet, meditating, grounding, gardening, spending time outside, walking etc.) Sundresses are also my weakness and I never fn wear them. (My new obsession currently is a big flowy romper..) ANYWAYS… let me know if I can help you. It seems like you’re highly stimulated and you need to take more time every day to decompress and be in quietness. Maybe spending time with your headphones on with white noise. I relate to you being on a busy road and needing quiet. Again, much love.

      minimalism comes with a LOT of different emotions to be fair... I was just trying to make sure I wasn't overloading myself with too much before I had the chance to use some of it. it's mostly from a place of mindfulness and knowing that hobbies can be something that I fall off of (based on my past track record lol)
