Top tip when removing a steering wheel. Always loosen the bolt as far as possible, just leave it in the threads a turn or two.
Then you pull on the wheel, the wheel cannot go out of control and hit you in the face or yank on a electric connector. Then just undo the bolt the rest of the way and remove as normal.
Chris Paul as a rule that works, but on a lot of cars I’ve worked on the wheels are never on tight

Good for you for highlighting the potential dangers of airbags - they are explosive devices after all. I think its the capacitor(s) that have to drain down after you have disconnected the battery so the air bag doesn't accidentally discharge

Nice mods. Those stainless steel pedals were fitted to the mk5 SXi as standard. Not sure about SRi but they probably have them too
center console always looks smart in gloss black, also the pink stitching you can turn black with shoe polish not the liquid stuff the proper one that comes in a small flat tin.. save u some money replacing them and also will clean the leather in the same process
GSi steering wheel makes a BIG difference to the feel of driving the car. One of the best mods I've done to my Astra. Also thanks for showing how to fit the pedals as I had no idea on how to do em so nice one mate 👌🏼💯

Nice to see the Astra videos. I picked up exactly the same car (model and year) a few months ago, it's going to be a bit of a project so I'm looking for to seeing what you do with yours (I've already added a few GSI steering wheels to my watch list after watching this vid :D).
About your center console. My Astra is in black and came with a silver center console, it would go nicely with your steering wheel. It might be worth having a look around some breakers see if they have one. It was silver from the factory so you know they can be picked up already in that finish. It's hard to beat a nice silver/black finish. My plan is to have the kind of opposite of yours, have the black car with silver trimmings. I had not long found the Angel Eye headlights when I saw your vid about them.

Hey dude, a quick tip when retightening the centre bolt if your unsure of the torque setting is to use a paint marker or automatic centre punch to indicate where the TDC (top dead centre) of the bolt is before undoing it. So that way when you retighten the bolt you know exactly where to stop & not over tighten it.

A great leather cleaner is AutoGlym. I used that on my Mondeo steering wheel and it got rid of the shine on the leather. Took it back to being matte and made it look so much better. Team that with a magic eraser
Center consol, I'd go for a matt black finish where the lcd display is and down past head unit, then I'd do the bottom parts, Ash tray are to handbrake in similar gray to bottom of wheel, then silver stitched gators, oh and have you thought of an irmscher badge for steering wheel center? Do like the mk4 Astra, use to have a z18xe1 sri in black, brilliant cars. 👍👍

I use to do this shit 20 years ago to my mk4 Escort 1.4 LX, swapping xr3i bits onto it, damn if social media was around then I’d be a celebrity today 😂😂

CENTRE CONSOLE: OEM silver (try get second hand parts)
GAITER: OEM Black.
GEAR KNOB: Aftermarket black leather but nothing tacky.
Interior looking better with the new wheel though, looks good and I bet it feels nicer to drive with too. 👍
Its really good,3 mods in one video,it certainly looks a lot better and changed the interior,the centre console has gotta be silver,it will blend in with the steering wheel and everything and the paintwork.

I have an SRI over here in sunny New Zealand (come enjoy the weather one day my man!!). I really want to turbo it one day but buying parts for a European car here in NZ takes months of saving for a student 😅 I have the grey kinda colour on my interior console and I mean it suits... but I reckon spruce it up with some blue 🤙

I could understand you, the airbag isn't there to hurt you, I've changed a lot of airbags when the recall for every passenger and driver airbag came and I'm still alive 😂 I also unhooked the negative battery pole , but I know some people who didn't unhooked the battery I was a bit shocked 🙈
*The best thing to do with the center console it to swap it for an Astra Mk4 gsi Sat Nav Centre Console!* (for the Vauxhall/Opel gsi gte coupe and Zafira)! Most of them are black, gray, silver or with carbon fiber print. Would go for the same color of the car! You don't have to buy it with the Sat Nav because they are still expensive and I don't know if the wiring is there for them on the non-gsi mk4's. But, it fits any 5-inch screen so an aftermarket reversing camera or/and dashcam would be an amazing mod! _It fits with the gsi look and is an awesome upgrade!_
Nice video liking this project, I personally would get a GSi centre console so it matches the steering wheel then see if you can find a gear and handbrake gaiter in the same colour as the bottom of the steering wheel??? Also I think you should now get a driving video to give us an idea of your new induction noise 😁👌

Im sure you could get hold of gsi interior parts for the dash . I used white stiched gear gaitor on my first vectra b , looked really good .

that air filter box is a plenum and your engine needs it, with a pod filter you will get less MPG, less power, you might notice the car hesitates when pulling away, Good video and good luck with you project cars.

When removing the steering wheel, leave the nut in when you try to free it....it wont fly off and hit you in the face or damage any wires. Just a helpfull tip for you :)
Good video when had a gsi wheel on my zaf I used a magic eraser on the leather and it came out like brand new your would feel way better with all the grease and dirt again

Either get a centre console panel from a GSI or maybe consider wrapping it with a carbon fibre look, mate of mine did it on an m3, looked the nuts. 👍🏻
You can actually build in the steering wheel controlls. It's pretty easy to do if you know your wiring

I tried to keep my box in when I put my air filter on my astra g but unfortunately it was to big and hit against bonnet when down and wouldn’t shut, so I took it off and mounted tube down so it wouldn’t just flap around

When you mentioned the cone air filter I was going "NOooooooooo!!!!"
While it was nice of Funk to send you a freebie, it isn't something I would like on mine.
You're lucky this is a MAP- only engine, those things can mess up the way the air flows through the intake ducts and cause MAF sensors to give incorrect readings affecting fuelling that standard fuel trim action won't tune out.
If you want to experiment for more intake noise, get another intake duct and remove the resonator box, you should find it gets a throaty roar at a certain RPM and high load.
As I've said before, I've really enjoyed the Astra series, I have a Zafira A and my gf has a Astra G like yours.
When the rubber wear down on the clutch pedal and you have water on ur shoe it is leathol but I do have an uprated clutch on my vxr (don't get a lightweight flywheel they sound dodgy once up to temperature)
I don't know why people are so paranoid about air bags going off by accident, it is very unlikely even with the battery connected. You would have to introduce at least +10v to activate it by accident and that's assuming it is still grounded. I think the CANBUS / OBD (whatever you want to call it) is also only about a 3v signal so even if shorted to the positive side won't be enough to set it off.
Also there are no capacitors in the ECU that hold enough voltage after the battery is disconnected to activate an airbag so after removing the positive from the battery you have more chance of being struck by lightening than setting it off.
I think gunmetal grey and grey stitching... maybe have a go of wrapping it... keep up the good work 👍
Them open panel air filters just make more noise. Use more fuel, and lose power on bottom end. They're a gimmick on the application you've used it on.
I learned that the hard way and went back to the standard box and panel filter

Nice intro. The upgrades are a nice touch. Centre has to be same colour as lower part of steering wheel. Will lift centre. I can see leather/half leather seats coming soon.
Great work on changing the steering wheel I like those bits that help to grip the wheel too much better . I don’t mind the glitter on the controls but the pink stitching I would change the black on the gator for the gear stick but it’s your car James I’m sure many other people will have some great ideas in the comments
I think a brushed aluminum look would look great on the center console, especially with some dark blue stiching on the leather shifter!
Yeah add on mod cons like built in sat nav if the wiring is there and you can find it cheap enough.

Nice additions to the car. You should buy a cheap car, improve it and flip it for a profit. Keep doing that and see where it leads. Will be a good series for the channel aswell 👌🏻

That cone filter is loosing power not gaining it, a high flow cotton direct replacement panel filter is what you should fit, those cone filters just such up hot air from the engine bay!
Did the filter clear the hood when it's shut? Looking at it from the top looks like it was close.
Think you should flock the dash parts! You can buy flock kits on eBay for much cheapness!

Dude if you want to drain the electrics after disconnecting a battery just try and crank the car... Will empty anything left instantly and do no damage.
I had an astra once, it was a 1.6 club in polar sea blue with OEM wheels that I have not seen in any other astra, the air conditioning broke so we sold it I believe it's been scrapped.....

Im same with my steering wheel i get diesel and all kinds of crap on my hands at work, i just use a pair of dunlop golf gloves from sports direct Dailey for work then when go b road bashing at weekend make sure hands clean

Do the centre console a satin silver. Whenever you use a gloss colour the top reflects off the windscreen and it's really annoying 👍
The pod filter looked too high for the bonnet to close properly as it was way above the wing sills. How'd you get around that?
I like your videos, you have a talent for making it entertaining and informative and clearly, you are good at the editing. There is however some repetition. For instance, you talk on two separate occasions about the look of it and the cleaning. I think you should consider breaking the video into stages and having a section on, looks, cosmetics and cleaning and a separate section on fitting. That way this video will be about 15 minutes instead of 20. When a video is as long as 20 I'm not so inclined to bother to watch and I'm sure that goes for other people.
Did the bonnet shut properly with the air filter sat on the lower air box like that? It looked like the cone was sat well above the wing in the video? Dash trims should be silver or grey I reckon

I got the sr turbo limited edition and the colour of the centre console is the same colour as the steering wheel which you have now that's the way I would go I am very interested in what you do that xvideo as I need to do mine again but I want to see how you take it apart I have booked it in with Vauxhall to take all of that apart and respray it for me and they're charging me £360 I'm supposed to be getting it done on the 18th of December but depending on how easy it is to take apart I may not take you there looking forward to your video
When you drive do u notice a clumping sound every now and then over near the drivers side? Like because the top case is supposed to be over the air filter isn’t there? Mine does
Airbags need power to go off so stop worrying. You can hit and throw them things around and it will never go off. You need to hit the sensors on the outside of the car to set it off and they take a big hit to set the air bags off not a little bump
How about having it dipped or wrapped in a silvery carbon effect?
Did u find a loss of power after fitting air filter lower down 2800 lower ? I have same engine but in a meriva found it had more response with standard airbox
