    Just for future mate when laying the bead of rtv down on the sump stay the other side of the bolt holes, going round the outside means oil can sometimes come out the bolt holes even when its tight, good job though!

      Also my idea .. was looking if somebody said the same thing before .. and you did :). Honestly, i would take it back off and do the job again but better. If you did like this with all the bolts, i can not imagine it won't leak.... But let me know if i was wrong. That would be very well possible too. Curious, as an experiment, if it will leak a bit or a lot... or not at all. Good luck !

    Hi. Well done for getting that all done. One thing I would check seeing the amount of oil in the exhaust is check the condition of the o2 sensors because that can contaminate them and make them not perform as they should, Check them both. Check that the pre cat 02 is switching between 0.1v & 0.9v and the post cat 02 should be steady at .5 volts. Giving them a clean with carb cleaner won't be good enough. If the post cat one is all over the place then don't just presume that it just needs to be replaced. How much oil you mentioned was in the pipe could have contaminated the cat too far and made it ineffective, and now the new laws on emissions are even tighter, it won't pass the MOT.

    Well done for not only working out why it wouldn't start, but for not editing it out, most would have cut to a running engine, you left the 'bad' bits in, it not working as hoped but then you finding the solution, so big kudos for that.

    Yes even for us it was a of a roller coaster emotional ride, the disappointment of it not starting or running properly, but big smile after he found the problem and then it ran properly.
    Well done 'The savage Garage', i would not have been brave enough too tackle such a job.

    I was watching with as much concern as you when it wouldnt start/run! Ive done this job on plenty of older carbed Fords for my sons and years ago on my own cars in the 70's. When it works, I know the feeling at 12:00m on your vid! Im trying to get my son to follow you, hes 20 and he would learn! My older kids went through all this in the 90's.Fiestas and CVH Fords dont take a hone-job and new rings too well- once they burn oil and loose compression- its a re-bore.

    I love all your videos you explain things in real world terms not like a tech geek plus you don't swear like a trooper as in a majority of garage youtube videos so thumbs up for that. I've been working on cars & motorbikes for 35 years ( yes i am that old!) it took me about 10 years to build up the confidence to take an engine apart & put back together..in the right order!! but nothing seems to faze you, you took it apart & reassembled like you were building a lego set..keep up the good work

  • @harveysmith100
    @harveysmith100 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really good to see it running, nothing like the feeling of breathing life into a few lumps of metal.
    I was one of the veiwers dead against a breakers yard engine.
    You have learned so much more, built confidence and learned valuable lessons.
    I am pleased it didn't start straight away, two reasons, you learned to double check everything!
    Second, I know you really wanted to get it started but I can't tell you how important it is to get the oil pumped around, the delayed start could have well saved you from scratched bores or worse. By the time she started to run, the oil pressure was up, so no harm done..
    Nice to see the look of contentment after it was running well. Lot's learned which is fantastic.
    You could have done this and you could have done that. Yes. But it was your first time, it isn't a McLaren, it is an old Astra. That engine will outlast the car now. Job well done.
    You will go on to do many more.

  • @steve0680657
    @steve0680657 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Take it for a long gentle drive.... 50mph 4th gear..... that'll let metal surfaces in the engine bed back in (especially new rings/cylinder surfaces) and help cook out the oil in your exhaust
    Gentle throttle to keep the inlet manifold vacuum levels high (they go low the wider you open the throttle body) ......basically drive like you are running on fumes miles from a petrol station.

    Credit where its due, i watch ur astra vids from strip to rebuild and to be fair all i can say is well done. I like how when it reved up you sat down, had a think, checked all your work, fittings, connections, fluids etc and found a wee mistake which we all have made before. The reward for patience is an engine starting and running with no warning lamps on so again well done n keep up the work.
    Not many young people are hands on learning like u mate. I'll def be following your vids

    I am so happy that the Astra is running. Well done on getting it this far. I have had 2 Opels. The one was an Astra and the other a Corsa. I wouldn't worry about the sight missfire too much because both my Opels did it until the day I sold them. The missfire never ever affected my two Opels at all. I now have 2 Fords and love them both to death. I love watching your channel because you work on Ford and Opel which are the 2 Brands of cars that I love. Keep up the good work. I will be watching your awsome Videos.

    Great job mate!! Easy mistake to make when you leave a job and going back to it. The loose bolts on the manifold would cause a lean mix hence when it starts it revs like f**k, and sometimes won't start. Look forward to the next video

    Fab job 👍 rewarding result, a bit of a scare first off, those GM eco-tec engines sometimes have slight twitch on tick over almost like a slight misfire , but doesn’t usually cause any issue I think it’s the fuel delivery system that can cause it, sometimes a new fuel filter may help.

  • @centsam5947
    @centsam5947 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Nice job man, the misfire will probably just be because the o2 sensor is filled with oil, should sort it self out after a good dive

    Good job! always a good feeling after doing major work to an engine to hear it run again.
    oil will burn out the exhaust in no time give it a good run for a few days, just run it hard and get it hot.

  • @TK42138
    @TK42138 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good work, nice result. I felt your pain when it didn't fire up. Since an engine is essentially just a big air pump, the loose inlet manifold was allowing excess air upstream of the air mass sensor, this weakens idle mixture so ECU tried to compensate by adding fuel based on excess air going in using O2 sensor data. MAP signal would show higher pressure so assumed throttle was open which conflicted with actual throttle position sensor data.

  • @masterblaster20006
    @masterblaster20006 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seconds after hearing it shriek with revs I did honestly guess it was sucking in air from somewhere.
    I had a similar problem on a mk6 1.8i Ford escort. Headgasket blew, a mate and I rebuilt the top end and in the headgasket kit was an intake manifold gasket. Because it was in the kit for this engine we figured it was meant to be there. Turns out it wasn't. The rubber rings around the inlet ports on the manifold were sufficient

      Sorry I don't agree. The Astra J onwards has much better interior quality. Having said that, the 1.6 auto petrol is completely gutless (the wife has one). It really needs a turbo or maybe fewer gears as a six-speed box is too much for this setup.

    Suggest you get a parts washer, James. Seem you are doing a lot of dirty work of late and would be a worthwhile, long term investment. They aren't that expensive..Bigger is better but depends on what space you have(or don't have) in your man cave...Regard starting the car without turning it over.....well, not something I would do. You can turn the engine without starting by putting the throttle peddle to the floor. The puts the car in 'clear flood mode' so it shouldn't start...but you can build oil pressure up in just a couple of turns(the oil light will go out)...Your battery is probably shagged. It's not the voltage that matters but the Cold Cranking Amps available. Been there more than a few times. You can get a battery tester (Solar make a fairly cheap one) or a carbide battery tester which is a bit old school but puts the battery to a very stringent test. Either way, if you battery is below par it will NEVER return to its former glory. Well done on getting it running and your 'fix' seems to have worked very well. Shi7 happens sometimes regards bolts and stuff...Oil kills catalysts but you can buy one of those 'snake oil' products for cleaning your cat....worth a try or you can get an new one...they aren't that expensive these days..

    Reason why it reved was because of un calculated air and the map sensor and the ecu can’t calculate the amount of fuel to air ratio and she reved to try and counter act that and once u tightened the bolts no unwanted air was going into the manifold

    I wouldn't let it idle too long. You should really drive it and bed those new rings in, there's not enough load on them just at idle and they won't bed properly and once the rough hone has gone you will be left with glazed polished bores and back to square 1.

    Noticed that when you put the silicone seal on the sump you spread the beed around the outer side of the bolt hole rather than the inner side of the bolt hole, this may cause problems in the future as oil can pass through and drip down the bolt. Just thought i would let you know, it may not be a problem but i have seen it happen before.

      Just read previous comments and realised this has already been discussed. I was meant to say something as soon as i watched the video but forgot to.

    Way to go nice one.(:-)
    I thought the slight misfire could be a hole in the exhaust caused with the oil cleaning the exhaust inside drying up and then revealing a small hole where the rust has been inside.
    The odd engine vibration if near or on the airbox could be engine mounts worn or not aligned up correctly as the bolt has to be bang in the middle of the mount before you tighten them up.
    I thought you would be jumping up & down like mad when it started up and ran good.
    Well done.(:-)
