I did the smartwatch thing for a few years, but came back home to Casio. I like having a watch I don't have to worry about charging every other day. I have this watch and it's my apocalypse watch. This watch is a beast.
This is the best g shock ever ( maybe alongside with gw 5000u but I would go with Rangeman). Timeless shape and look - its been over 10 years and this beast is looking as fresh as it used to be Great features Tough like rock Price is great
Just got the Rangeman over the weekend. Awesome looking watch! I was slightly annoyed the display was on the small side. Definitely not a deal breaker though. I did swap out the metal keeper for a scavenged rubber one off an older Casio. I bought the Mudman before this watch but the display was terrible to read for such a high $, so back it went. I feel like Casio always seems to fall just short of making the perfect G-Shock. Anyway, thank you for such a thorough detailed review!
One of my favorite watches in my collection, along with Mudmaster GWG-1000. I always carry it on the mountains as a backup, or better said as an alternative to my Garmin. I enjoyed your review.
Interesting take: I'd been thinking about this to replace both my DW-7900 and PRG-300-1ER: he only thing my Pro-Trek 300 lacks here is Multi Band 6, but a little personal research revealed the ProTrek kept fantastic time over a good two months…meaning that, assuming I was abducted and dropped into the Middle of Nowhere, I'd be more concerned about the compass and Barometer functions than whether the time function was within 15 seconds-or-less accuracy. (Assuming I'd get to see my watch…you know how Hollywood plots go.) Excellent review!
Thank for the compliment. I agree, most of this is splitting hairs. However, I like the simplicity of time changes for DST and daily updated time adjustments.
some months ago i went to a shop to buy a new gshock and they had the rangeman and the mudman. i tried them both and chose the mudman. i was surprised how the rangeman seemed small and cramped compared to the mudman. also i heard about the issue of the strap pins breaking in some occasions on the rangeman.. so yea, fantastic watch, but the mudman wins overall for me. also the shape of the bezel of the mudman makes it so water can just flow out of the screen, while the rangeman has more of a concave shape. and the mud resistance of course..
Agreed on the chunky feel of the Rangeman and the ability of the Mudman to shed water/mud off of the crystal. What did you think of the light on both models?
This watch is still legit. I am calling it the survival (outdoorsy) watch. Text not the largest but it packs many features and even better than the later GWG 1000 Ana-digi Mudmaster I own. Accessing the ABC is quick and easy without fiddling or cycling all the other functions, and it also has different sounds for each ABC mode. Since I don’t use it and not all the functions, I am still cannot master all the functions. It’s so good that I had 2 of them 😂
I have a comparison video upcoming between the Mudman and Rangeman so I won't spoil that conclusion...I really like the Rangeman. I totally agree on accessing the ABC functions...very straightforward. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi Tim. This is my first (and only) Master of G (aka The Zombie Apocalypse watch). Love this watch. The only issue I have is I prefer ani-digital watches, but that’s not a deal breaker. In my opinion it’s a timeless (no pun intended) piece. I’m keeping it forever. On a side note, if you want to drive your wife crazy 😉 with a light, try the Casio ProTrek PRG-650Y Night Safari. That thing lights up the room. 😳
At first, I wasn't at all interested...just needed to get through the review and by the end, I was hooked. I did a throw down between this model and the Mudman. Its was also a different outcome for reasons I wasn't anticipating. That vide will be coming out soon. I'm absolutely going to look into the PRG650Y. I always like a bright night light! Take Care!
This suits you bro! It looks rough and ready and like it could survive a fair amount of damage! Seems chunky but practical! The only thing that is a drawback is the display size as you mentioned! The real question is is it as good as your Pro-Trek and will it replace it as you go to ABC watch? Time will tell I guess!😅 Hope all is well in your neck of the woods! Take care and God bless Bro!
Very honest review. I pretty much agree with you. Casio g shock do really make staff that last. Not easy to read is spot on 100%. .. I have the same problem with GWG-1000 Mudmaster digital negative screen too but again great watches.
It's all a give and take with this complex watches! I have my Casio Square...which I've grown to accept the display size as the smallest I can go without reading glasses....and I'm hanging onto the Square. Have a great weekend!
About to purchase the Mudman 9500MEC model but I do wish the Rangeman (which I have) felt better on my wrist…since I have a small wrist I need the wings that the Mudman offers
@@Realidealgear I dont know if everyone prefers it. If it ever stops working though, i will def buy the same one. Its preference. You cant go wrong with any g shock i think.
Rangeman and Protrek are out of my self imposed budget of $100 per Watch, so it’s SGW-400 which has been serving my hiking needs (it has thermometer, barometer and altimeter).. BTW, what caught my attention was that fountain pen. Are you a fountain pen enthusiast too ? Accompanying my 60 or so Casios are my 60 or so fountain pens !!
The SGW-400 is an OUTSTANDING option. I did a review of the 500 and loved it, great value for an outdoor watch with a compass. My oldest son now has it. Thanks for watching
Had mine for 10 years and still godd but i have to give it to my nephew. Eyesight is getting worse. Numbers are too small for me to read. This rangeman is the longest g shock that i owned.
I don’t have the best eyesight and I agree, the display of the numbers may remove guys like you and I from hanging onto the watch. Have a great weekend.
Hey I bought a rangeman yesterday and it was brand new so the battery was only on medium. Now I noticed that the light is quite dimm when activated, do you think the watch needs a proper charge?
@@Realidealgear I dont think I can return it, bought it from ebay. It's not that I can't read the display but its unexpectedly dim. On camera it looks bright but thats how the camera perceives it
They can be set and should be set according to magnetic declination....always. I've found them not needing to be adjusted...I've only them for a relatively short period of time. Thanks for watching.
Hi Tim! Hier ist mal wieder Uwe aus Ludwigshafen Deutschland Rheinland Pfalz. Hoffentlich kannst du dich, an mich erinnern? Ich habe dich mit deinen Super Video's immer auf dem Schirm. Daher viele liebe Grüße aus Germany 👍. Was Super wäre!
I've worn this black one for a couple years, possibly my favorite watch. I got the olive green one for my aunt as she does medical missions, i thought it was cool with the Master Chief look and being used by Chris Hemsworth in Extraction. However, the blackout screen makes the green one very illegible and unusable in many lighting environments.
Negative displays are finicky. I have a GD350 and it’s awesome. I put together a video of some cheaper Casios and they were terrible. Seems to be hit n miss.
I got bored with GW9400 after a couple years and got myself the G-Monster (GPR-B1000) Hoping that it would be the high-tech beast. Boy was I wrong. GW9400 is the PERFECT Rangeman.
Good point. Imperfections in performance must equate to incapacity. How many deficiencies around the world America has addressed. Whole countries must be incapable. Moronic logic.

It’s a classic.

Couldn’t agree more on the smart watch tether called a charging cord. I much prefer as you’ve pointed out, minimal intrusion.
@darrylwoodbury your description is spot on, I call it my walking dead watch.
THE best, fairest and detailed review I've seen so far on this timeless apocolypse-ready beast of a watch. Thanks man!!!

The watch doesnt look tough. It is tough. I wear it daily from 2015. I have only changed a ztrap two times. Thats all it needed.
I stand corrected. I haven’t owned it as long as you have and from what I gather, this model is preferred over that Mudman GW9500

if frogman meant for the left hand , this watch probably for the right side , one might accidentally pressed the sensor pushers on the left wrist😅
