Replicating such an iconic tone from Rust in Peace was harder than I thought it was going to be. It had to be aggressive and articulate without losing the mid focussed snarl. I actually just got the remastered album on vinyl last week and I'm hearing elements of the guitars that I've never heard before. It seems to have clearer separation between the instruments and all in all sounds much better than I've ever heard it. I was hoping the book would have more nerd info in it about the recording sessions but it was more to do with the personal struggles that Megadeth had to go through making the album. It wasn't just Dave's story, it was like a group discussion with everyone involved having input throughout. It was definitely appreciated and I'm glad Dave took the time for the fans...

Developed a skin condition a few years ago and can barely play anymore. Loved this album to death and watching you play brought back some good memories. One thing I did not see was in your playing style. Mustaine used a technique called spider fingering which enables him to play those E to F or F# changes lightning fast. Spot on tone amazing, this is the best video on the RIP tone. This album is my all time favourite album not just favorite metal album.
FWIW Megadeth used Hafler triple giant and Bogner Fish preamps through VHT 2150 during this era but I’m not sure this is what they used in the studio.
Like you said the yellow Tortex pick helps to get that bitey, scratchy and aggressive pick attack, something the thicker picks fail to provide.
The usage of thicker strings is also a very nice match to the relatively flexible pick. Like George Benson once said thin pick for thick strings and thick pick for thin strings.

I've been using the Dunlop 0.73 picks for years. I've found them to be the most comfortable and versatile thrash pick out there.
I occasionally have a delve with the 2.0 metal TeckPick or the 1.0 Pickboy gripped plectrum. Another one that gives quite an interesting sound (for Big Jim Faith No More stuff) is the Dunlop Big Stubby 3.0mm, you can get some really good pick noise from them, from general picking, harmonics and even muting with the pick itself.
Thanks for the great video mate, really appreciate your work on this. I've just finished putting my old Jackson Randy Rhoads JRR-94 back together after 6 years apart. New SS frets, EMG 89 in the bridge and EMG 85 in the neck, knocking out some Megadeth is pretty high on my list of things to do right now. Happy New Year mate

Excellent job as always! My DSL20H is so fizzy on lower volumes. It has very annoying high and mid high frequencies that I couldn't handle even with a 10 EQ pedal. I bought a Harley Benton power attenuator, set amp volume on 4, high power mode on, changed EQ a bit and now it sounds great.

Sir, you got my full respect. This is close to being identical to great Dave's tone. Kudos.

Love that album, the rust in peace riff is a ton of fun to play :)

That sounds awesome. Dave usually had such an aggressive rhythm tone compared to the other metal bands of the era.

I seem to remember reading that he used an ADA preamp through an EL34 Marshall power unit, but it's been so long, that I can't say for sure. Good job on the video.

Great video! Love the way your tracking sounded on lucretia and polaris. Neither get anywhere close to enough recognition.
