I like the idea of Essendon aiming for a general defender late in the draft as you say. Angus Clarke, Jaxon Artemis and Harry Charleson are others I hope slide. Great summary lads!
With the way bid matching works, it's a no-brainer to trade away pick 9 & match a bid with a handful of beans. Even if there wasn't a bid, they'd be forced to pick him at #9 which is arguably overs?
I think the half back flank is precisely where the bombers need to recruit. Pretty much all the delistings and retirements came out of the backline this year. It opens up spots for players like Jaiden Nguyen.
We delisted spuds like Kelly & Weiderman. We have McKay, Reid & Hayes as key defenders. Ridley does intercept. McGrath, Redman, Saad & Roberts as you small & lockdown defenders. Redman & Saad can play as mid sized. We lack is the forward line, need Kako & another small pressure forward. Need another key forward as 2m is all over the place.
@ Kelly was definitely a spud, why do you think he retired as no other club wanted him. I don’t know what you were watching, Weiderman played the whole season in defence this year including his 1 appearance at AFL level. Depth it’s important, that doesn’t mean you want a bunch of spuds as your depth players as when they then inadvertently have to cover for an injury they’ll get smoked at AFL level. Look at what happened to our defence this year when Reid & Ridley were injured.
Been big on Johnson to Essendon. Played school footy with Caddy, Kako and Gresham’s younger brother. Lot of ties there and likely to fall in place where the dons picks are lot of versatility for their list as well.
Essendon already has the nuggety mid in Hobbs that can't get a game, and with Tsatas stuggling to get time also, it seems a waste (imo) to get another mid. Also didn't mention Ess received Melb future 1st which I personally would love to see be used to get back into the first round and grab Shanahan or Faull. Ess really need to fix that forward line. Get one of Shanahan or Faull to grow with Caddy, get rid of Wright next year, he's a disaster.
As a Bombers fan i totally expect us to trade back into the first round after the Kako bid. If Richmond take 7 first rounders in the same draft, it could really bite them in the backside come free agency time.
If I’m recruiting for the dons I’m trading back in & targeting cooper hynes I think he would be a great fit for us & can be a real gem/steal in this draft, I’d be keen on Shamaham obviously & Christian moraes but they seem less likely. Later in the draft I’d like to see us select jasper alger to partner kako & I’d also like Bailey McKenzie & Liam McMahon tiered the back of the draft. That’s my dream draft
Will they trade back in? I initially didn’t like trading out however gives flexibility in the 2024 draft, as the bombers have two first rounders in 2025. If someone slides I think they will.
@@DylanAlexanderFollowsDraftI think it very much depends on first where the bid for Kako comes. The next factor is who slides because they could very well end up giving up a first round selection for a second round r pick
Merrett needs help in the midfield imo, they need like Harvey Langford imo address the big bodied midfield once & for all. but they traded out so that's not good.
Essendon was right to trade 1st rd pick it's been a winning move big talk has been S.O.S was going to make a play on Kako plus it has improved our hand

@ Kelly wasn’t a spud and Weiderman wasn’t a defender. Kelly filled an important niche. Besides you need backups

Definitely mid/ def travalgia or a key defender Whitlock, Trainor, but if I’m Essendon I’m going for Berry as a well as Kako.
That would be my dream draft.
You can only get one
