Hello from 2020! I just wanted to say that was a good joke right there.
The funniest thing is this is a more accurate portrayal of Jekyll and Hyde than any movie. In the book the serum didn't make him lose control of himself, it just physically altered his appearance radically enough that he could act out his base desires without fear of anyone knowing the respectable Dr. Jekyll was anything but a polite dignified gentleman. Mr. Hyde was just the name he made up.
Honestly for most of the book i was like “oh so mr. Hyde is just dr. Jekyll but short gay and angry” lmaooo

@@7superdaimajin haha, no I do not think killing small children is something gay men do often(also he didn’t stomp her to *death* , he just broke her arm and hand among other bones) but I do think there is some parts of the book that could be interpreted as gay subtext which would probably be too long and boring to type, but that’s just how I interpreted it lol

@@lewis3908 I know, its terribly entitled! Although, Movies and Films and Home Movies since the 1950's have been in color. In fact, since the 1940's, in fact also definitely since the 1930's. For example, 1936 Stowaway is cinecolor, starring a wonderfully elegant coupe and their darling meet up gal--shirley temple, fluent in Chinese. Those colorizations are gruesome, there about as real as making every car on a street in 1950, purple. Because thats literally all it is to begin with.

This is really clever.
People forget that Hyde isn't the Hulk--he chooses to take the formula and become Hyde BECAUSE he wants to give himself a separate identity that can do bad things and not tarnish his name. And it's not a "he took it and now he's forever changed and he regrets it" kind of thing; he voluntarily keeps taking it for a while.
Some argue that the potion doesn't even separate his pure side from his dark side...that it just gave his body a different form as a simple change of identity. Like him putting on a fake mustache to go do wicked things.
There's a pretty convincing case to be made that the book is a metaphor for substance abuse, as Dr Jekyll says at one point that he can be rid of Mr Hyde any time he wants (similar to an addict saying "I can stop any time I want") and RL Stevenson struggled with addiction to opiates and cocaine.

im about to create a manga about jekyll and hyde and this is my only info
I honestly love both takes of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Although, I will never accept them as being two separate personalities. Dr. Jekyll actually liked taking the serum because it removed any inhibitions that kept him from doing things he can't do as his respectable self. It pretty much just changed his appearance and made him want to actually act out his desires. I don't think the book stated what he desired, but honestly it was the Victorian era so he could have very well just been out partying with guys. Sure, the whole respectable doctor taking the serum and having to fight against Hyde the entire way until he put himself down for good to keep others safe is interesting and all, but they forgot the whole point of the original story. The stories are nice and enjoyable in their own separate ways, but Jekyll and Hyde are the same person except one is where Jekyll is freed from restraints of conscience. The stories are different takes, but it pains me to think of someone saying it's two separate people within one body like DID. It's not DID. It's the same person throughout. Jekyll is just a façade to hide his willingness to act out his temptations.
Honestly, I can see where the misconception about DID comes from, as it's something that's leaned into with adaptations and Jekyll starts referring to Hyde as a separate person in his final confession in the book to try and separate Hyde from himself, even if it's clear that he IS Hyde through and through. Also, the Victorians (and the modern day for that matter) have a reputation for portraying people with mental illnesses like DID as freakish scary monsters, so it's not unreasonable to assume that it came from the original text.
A more accurate reading of the book is likely a metaphor for substance abuse - RL Stevenson himself had an addiction to opiates and cocaine, and the serum takes away Jekyll's inhibitions similar to alcohol.

In the book, there is actually some indication that Utterson(who is the main and POV character) thinks that Hyde is Jekyll's lover and Hyde is blackmailing him with that fact.
He never specifically voices what he thinks Hyde has over Jekyll but from context, Utterson's opinion of Jekyll, and the cultural context of the time, the two most likely options that Jekyll would suspect is that Hyde is either Jekyll's illegitimate child or his lover. However, because of how Jekyll reacts after Hyde commits murder, in Utterson's mind it would be much more likely to be the latter because illegitimate children were relatively common among the upper class. If Hyde were just an illegitimate son blackmailing him, then while it would be a hit to his reputation, it wouldn't be as bad as covering for a murderer. A male lover on the other hand would either get him imprisoned or executed(depending on when the book takes place).
It is also a valid interpretation that Utterson himself has feelings for Jekyll or vice versa, especially as despite both of them having wealth and status, both of them have remained bachelors. And in Utterson's case, he omits information to the police and covers for Jekyll when he thinks he might be implicated while in Jekyll's case, Utterson is the one person he utterly refuses to face after the serum fails(and anyone who knows what happened in the book knows that was a euphemism).
To answer your question on when the book takes place, the book was published in 1886, very shortly after the Labouchere Amendment was passed in Parliament that cracked down on "buggery" (aka anal sex) in public and in private, so it's likely that it was on Stevenson's mind somewhat when he was writing it, so 1885-6 is a reasonable assumption. It was actually the Amendment that got Oscar Wilde tried and imprisoned.

Hyde was based on a few characters in Edinburgh who led double lives. One was a cabinet maker and member of high society who also stole from his clients. Another was also a member of high society who confessed to being a witch. No doubt, as in many conservative societies, there was a bit of this going on too...
