      Indeed. Though that was a low joke from the perpetrator, undeserving of even an ounce of recognition.

      I laughed out so loud though, when I saw the comment and went back to the video.
      Additionally, this is the second time he recorded this video. Maybe, just maybe, he chuckled the first time around 😂.

    For some time, I most enjoyed the magic of Tal, but more and more I am starting to even appreciate more the poetry of Morphy.
    Tal seemed to create positions that one would think never have and never will be played again, whereas Morphy seems to play every game as if he knows even before the first move what all of the following positions will be.
    Well, unless he is tired.

    Paul Morphy was definitely a great Chess player but an underrated aspect of his character was his ability to get inside his opponents head. It's incredible that his demeanor could stay so calm and his sense of confidence could be felt by anyone in the room when he played. Does it sound familiar? It should because Magnus Carlsen excudes a very similar energy.

    • @flavio5046
      @flavio5046 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think, actually, that Kasparov did that. Never saw Magnus like this.
      But the quality of the player also creates a reputation and affects the psychological of the opponents.

    I once read a biography on Morphy that described Harrwitz as an "opprobrious braggart." After his second defeat of Morphy, they shook hands and Harrwitz proclaimed to all present, "“See! His heart is hardly beating faster than if he had won!” Morphy was so deeply stung by this insult that he swore Harrwitz had won his last game. And of course he was right. The only reason Harrwitz is remembered today is the sound thrashing he received at the hands of Paul Morphy.

      That was brutal the way that pieces were traded off so quickly. Harrwitz likely was in near shock.
      To revert to an olde tyme politically incorrect americanism, Morphy scalped Harrwitz. Or with less vivid modern phrasing, Morphy counted coup on Harrwitz.

    Harrwitz, and it seems many people like him as well, try their best to act like "gentlemen". But first they won't play Morphy cuz they are afraid to lose. Then they won't play him cuz they don't have time. They are also mad that he just showed up and expected to get a match with them. They don't act like "gentlemen" is my point. Basically, it's the arrogant old Aristocracy that Europe, and especially Britain and France, has been famous for since Charlemagne. In the same way that it was nice to see Fisher crush the Soviets. But even though they are both very odd ducks, Morphy is the MUCH more likable of the two. and watching him beat these arrogant jerk-ovs is truly a pleasure.

    For all we remember Morphy as being a blitzing, smashing hero like in the Opera game, we might forget that in one of the most serious matches he ever played, he happily went into an endgame 15 moves in, confident in his small edges (B vs N, 3 pawn islands vs 2). Had he either the inclination or the challenge, and had he been born in the time of chess clocks (fuck you, Louis Paulsen), he'd rightly be remembered as much for his genius as his romantic memories :)

    It just strikes me how different Chess must’ve been played in this pre engine era like for instance where Morohy’s opponent had the choice between taking the pawn with his king or recapturing with his own pawn and as you stated it would’ve been better to capture with the pawn strengthening that middle pawn island and not becoming a weakness that Morphy’s opponent would have to babysit Players nowadays have a huge advantage over these players of yesteryears and still those players back than were very talented Thanks Agadmator

    You got caught in the MS update. I use windows for my HTPC and it pisses me off to no end that so many updates mess with my audio settings and I have had to go back and sort out the mess many times. The telltale sign is when it is Wednesday and I have no sound, instant clue that MS update which goes out Tuesday night has clobbered it yet again. The other one I get is MS continually changing my home pages to Bing.

      Although Staunton was in fact not the final boss.
      Firstly, he was already way past his prime and secondly he had actually never been that impressive in the first place.
      The world's strongest player before and after Morphy was really Adolf Anderssen.

      @@priyasardesai9119 No, sorry to say but you're spreading fake news here, mate, not sure where you got this idea from but it's wrong.
      It's actually the other way round, Anderssen eliminated Staunton from the 1851 London International tournament and won the event; He beat Staunton 4:1, which is quite decisive. Anderssen is widely regarded as the inofficial World Champion from 1851 until Steinitz claimed the official WCT, only interrupted by the (sadly) short reign of Morphy.

    Morphy vs Harrwitz was like Gandalf vs Saruman , once Gandalf was grey ,it was all about maybe equal , but when he turns white ,the gap between them is enormous !

    I would've liked some thoughts from Agadmator as to why Morphy chose to castle queenside instead of kingside, since he had the option to do either one immediately.

    • @tenshou2791
      @tenshou2791 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the reasoning behind was maybe because Harrwitz castled kingside, and in the opening Morphy already started to slam attacks against the black king so most likely opposite castling to throw those pawns at the black kingside and a fun game was what Morphy was going for

    • @Crustee0

      Harwitz give up the bishop for the knight early on. And since the board is alr empty (of pawn) in the middle, maybe he want to trade down quickly to the position where he have bishop vs knight. And being aggresive is one way to get trades quickly

    I wouldve taken with the king which shows how ungreat my knowledge is lmao. I felt a wee bit uncomfortable opening a file up whilst the opposite colour still had a rook on that file meaning that black had 2 vs 3 pawns on the King side and wouldn't have been able to defend against those. #1000ratingEndgametactics
