Opening preparation now: I will use this sideline that the computer found after a 15- hour thinking, because it gives me a slight edge after move 27.
Opening preparation back then: That guy won me the other day,I will play the same opening. But there is a problem,he played black and now I play white, what shall I do?? I found it,I will play a silly move in move one, and then it will be as if I have black!!! Genius me!!!

I once had a chess teacher that actually taught us: "1. a3 is the best move, because that way white can play as if it were black, which is better."
He played it back then (when he was 2000+) and he played it in the 2019 World Senior Championship.
Just to be clear: I had forgotten his name, but I found him because of his opening - he plays every single game with white that way.

4:10 I'm probably missing something but it doesn't feel like exf3 en passant and Bxf3 works. Bxf3 allows Qh4+, either breaking the castle, or forcing white to go g3 Bxg3+ etc. Maybe Nxf3 is the line Agad meant to go through, it stops Qh4+.

Great game!. Although 1 a3!? is indeed a very non-enterprising move for White (basically is trying to play as black with an extra tempo), it can yield, nonetheless, a playable game, and white will have less trouble equalizing. Later on in the match (spoiler alert), Anderssen managed to win a beautiful game after equalizing and stopping a mating attack by Morphy, getting a superior endgame. Of course, almost nobody plays this as white these days, but it indeed yielded an interesting game in this case, with winning chances for both sides, but, sadly for Anderssen, he didn't have the push to find the winning or drawing ideas in the critical moments of the game. What this game shows is that if you let Morphy slide, he WILL crush you.
    Thanks for the video, Antonio!.

Hi agad. Thanks for the videos. Could you please show players' exchanged pieces in the video as well? (maybe above and down the board) #suggestion

"Marmaduke" is his first name - so it should be "Marmaduke Wyvill" not the other way around . Marmaduke was a common first name in 19th Century England. Nowadays you would get laughed at if you told people that that is your name . Adolf used to be quite a common first name for men too .....

It seems that Morphy and his great chess prowess cannot match Ivanchuk and his ability to walk the king up the board in the middle game and keep him safe.
