Really good "how to" video. The walk through on trouble shooting was excellent....... Couple of tips though, and I'm not a "marine mechanic" either, I am however a hydraulic mechanic. The line hooked up at the back to only one side is of absolutely no value to the process. You could likely swap the steering hose with the bleeder so that the bleeders are both inboard. I don't really know if it's worth the trouble though. Definitely start the process with the outboard to one side or the other and slowly turn to the opposite side. If your cylinder or your helm unit is leaking you are far better off taking it to a professional for repair than doing it on your own. No offense to any "diy" guys out there, it's just that sometimes special tools are required.

I just filled my boat's Sea Star steering unit and got it working again. I didn't have the hose for the cylinder and it appears to have released all of the air without it. It took a pint of oil to fill it up. My boat is a 98 Boston Whaler Ventura 18'. The oil bottle when I relaxed my hand compression helped vacuum the air out of the system.

I'm sure you know that tygon tubing is available at places like Home Depot and you can replace the tube on that cylinder bleed line with a longer tube.

I know this is an old video hopefully I get a response. If I turn slow the motor won’t move. As soon as I put some speed in turning it starts to turn. I’m hoping bleeding will help. Any suggestions? It’s only when turning starboard side btw

I think bleeding will definitely help. There's a chance either there's air in the starboard hose or perhaps something with the cylinder

Maybe better to buy a longer piece of hose so you can attach both ends of the hose to the ram.

Yeah that would help to ensure all air is completely out of the system!

As you only did one side at a time , wasn’t fluid coming out of the tube connected to the bleeder on the cylinder

No fluid was coming out of the tube, but it's very possible because I did only one side at a time the system wasn't fully contained which allowed air to get into it still...
