Very true, banking on a single competitive exam which is based elimination is a disaster as 95% of the aspirants will never have their dreams fulfilled. It's better to skill up during our undergrad days and start applying abroad with scholarship entries. Competion is competion, it's not made for masses or bulk, that's the truth.
This is also true for IAS preparation, It is also true for most of the toughest exams in the world. Finally a reasonable amount of students have to be eliminated from the competition. So, better to choose a secure life.
You are correct, I m from a civil engineering background and I took the Gate exam in 2021 but failed miserably. But then I applied for a geoinformatics course in symbiosis and passed the PIWAT.
Well I currently published 2 research paper preprints I tried my best as a music producer for 8+ years still I am nowhere near success. This has taught me that world works on luck not hardwork/smart work. I applied for gate exam for 4 times. I barely qualified two times. Well qualifying is not enough. You have to score 70 + to get into top 100. I am jobless now. I regret choosing only gate for getting a job. Now I realise i should have had plan B or C. Gate is a risky exam especially for a chemical engineer.

Only thing I can say is that if you are doing plain BSc you are fu%ked. Learn coding asap. Else do MSc, Phd, postdoc by which time you will be 32-33. Else go for government job preparation from today itself. Because going to college for BSc is a waste of time. The course is backdated to the power infinity. This is coming from someone who did his BSc from a college whose current NIRF ranking is all India 5 and did MSc from IIT Kharagpur.

I'd say no reward, psus aren't lucrative like a top tier mnc job and hardly handful of students get good mtechs which pay you well. It's basically a simple section test which we treat like upsc or some other govt job exam. Heck gate doesn't even compare to its predecessor the jee advance, jee toppers are way beyond any gate topper. They even get direct admission in universities like Stanford, Harvard, mit etc. Gate topper join psu where as jee toppers get mit, that's a really big chasm which we can never fill.
you can get into foreign universities directly through your gate score iit m tech(the problem is the requirement of the branch not in iits...if you wish you can go to different branch through gate psus even iims accept gate score for their fellowship program

ALERT!!!, (( CURRENT SCENARIO of GATE EXAM )) if you want to go only for PSUS then i suggest , dont go for GATE EXAM, bcz there is no surity of PSU JOB. PSU VACANCIES comes less than 100 including multiple branches required in respective PSU. unless u dont have a PLAN B ( M.tech/ MS), GATE is not at all useful, as there is no age limit for GATE, even lectures also writing exam, in CIVIL BRANCH , many students are scoring more than 90 marks, ( SATURATED COMPETITION ) meanwhile GATE is so dangerous that, now a days, difficulty level is increasing and NAT , MSQ are increasing , if u do small mistake u will not be awarded marks, finally ends with BAD RANK. GATE is VERY HIGH RISK EXAM

Do you know the job nature in IT sector and core job after mtech ? Do you know the humungous difference in salary growth between IT ( way higher ) and Core civil jobs ? Without these awareness dnt go n take mtech . U already did a mistake of choosing civil engg firstly . Dnt try to overdo that mistake by taking an mtech also . In indian job market these fields are not valued . If u r really really passionate abt civil , take a risk by paying money and doing MS abroad . It may pay off . Or else study coding . Research well with seniors and develop domain specific skills in a domain which is in demand in India ( Data science , software development , AI / ML .... ) . Companies dont care abt ur civil background as long as u have relevant skills ! Do well😊
