Today I am going to show you how to get the MS-DOS mode (or the command prompt only) mode back in Windows 10! It brings back the feel of a terminal and I like it. This project is still PoC, so don't mess with it too much.

At least you won't be able to play any DOS games as they are 16-bit applications and needs a full screen mode which isn't available since at least Windows 7 maybe it was droped already in Windows Vista.

For me, I recommend this mode. It runs very great on my HOST Computer and its running on version 1909.

If this continues to use as an MS-DOS mode, I think there will be less people to use Windows. But, they would look more like a professional than Windows today.

Very interesting! I used to play many games back when I had a working 98 machine. Don't have any more working PS/2 keyboards so I can't get past the corrupt CMOS screen! :(

That has nothing to do with MS-DOS mode. That is interrupting the Windows boot process at an early stage, but a) there is no underlying MS-DOS, b) the system is already in graphics mode and dping multitasking, c) SYSTEM priviledges can be easily obtained by running a single command of SysInternals tools while running your Windows system w/o any tricks that require rebooting.
A Windows Server installation without GUI would at least give a real console-only feeling. It is rarely used though, because not having the Windows GUI available makes management hard and most server applications just expect Windows to have a working GUI and are therefore incompatible with a Windows Server that (officially) does not have a GUI at all.
"That is interrupting the Windows boot process at an early stage" is a false statement. This is because the way it works is it makes windows think setup is in progress, and sets the cmdline to open cmd. The reason that a bootscreen appears is due to windows faking it to run setup, and due to setting the cmdline of setup, windows will open up a command prompt, so windows is already started up.
It IS interrupting the normal boot process, otherwise, Windows would continue to start normally and present the Desktop, Explorer and start all the background user tasks. This is quite similar to some installer / uninstaller routines, that need to run at an early moment for them to work. Even Windows Update has to run at such an early phase (Step 1: prepare Update, Step 2: early boot phase installation, Step 3: post-install tasks), it just presents a differnt screen to inform the user about the update progress.

Isnt this just same function as safe mode with only CMD? The only difference seems to be only making special menu as one click convenience without pushing Shift button with restart menu.
Or just running bcdedit /set {current} bootmenupolicy legacy and then pressing F8 at boot
it's mostly the same but using this, you will have to power of system which control all over the pc, you can delete your whole system with it-
for more realistic: turn off the animation, and enter the properties - set to run with maximize

Try to launch some aplications or processes (like explorer, logo UI etc.), while in MS-DOS mode
1) explorer is being launched for 3 seconds in ms dos mode. (look at dosexec)
2) Why would you try to run LogonUI? That would defeat the whole purpose of MS-DOS Mode

The Windows console is light years far from DOS. No 16 bit real address mode, that is not DOS. If you want to have DOS, you have to boot it. Or install and run a DOS emulator. www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1

Just did this on my host. Literally watching this in MS-DOS mode, was able to get Chrome working. Sound doesn't work tho :(
"Single user mode", like in Linux, is perhaps a better name, as the only thing it has it common with MS-DOS is a command prompt. (My pet peeve: when people call the Windows command prompt, or worse, PowerShell, "DOS". I've even heard Linux terminals being referred to as a "DOS window".)
Would it be possible to make "init 1", "init 5" and "init 6" work, as synonyms of "msdos", "win" and "reboot"? (Too bad "sudo" is impossible.)
well... during ms-dos era it was possible to replace the command.com with another "shell".
Popular replacement was 4DOS from JP Software or its 'cousin' the NDOS from Norton.
Thus calling PowerShell as "DOS" while indeed weird, its acceptable from historical perspective.
Many functions/features introduced by 4DOS do have its equivalents/replacement on PowerShell but not on standard NTVDM.
gsudo is an sudo alt for windows, and even accepts the sudo command
We now have sudo on Windows
So that's just classic old recovery mode (boot to command prompt) option, but with some handy scripts to boot into it

I couldn't open a .exe file on win xp, I fixed it by putting it in a zip/rar file and opening it from there

There is a weapon more powerful then this in theory and that is the recovery mode option as it is a ramdisk, more accurately located at recovery//winre.wim as this literally loads as ram disk, it allows access to anything in theory via the same shift+f11 trick and should be able to do anything to the system as it is operating on a offline system, this plus a USB pen with say 7zip on it, can be used to perform very specialised operations, such as resetting the registry via over writing system32/config with a version from a install.wim(You can access files in a wim file via 7z or other tools).
Again I don't advise anyone to dare do this without knowing exactly what they are doing as you can actually delete otherwise protected folders, heck even if one wanted to be a mad man in theory use it to replace windows with linux using windows.
This seems great. Could use it for some password (SAM) recovery.

Many, many thanks - I'm commissioning a new desktop machine fitted with a collection of 'obsolete' adapter cards so I can still have a parallel "printer" port and multiple RS232 ports. The new machine will naturally come with Win10. I can live with that [I'm finally moving on from WinXP] but I have various legacy software tools that will only operate properly in MS-DOS, and these tools are still very important to me.

If you type exit on ms-dos mode it will return you to the lock screen but network, sound is disabled so you might need to restart your computer

My grandma downloaded a ransom ware in my pc (host) and I knew I had this mode so I managed to destroy the ransomware with MS-DOS 10
You can also get CMD System32 privileges if you get CMD on the lock screen btw. If you change Utilman to CMD then you’ll be able to click the accessibility button and launch CMD
