What I like about Vilgefortz is that most of these type of villains: scheming, plotting, controlling things behind the scenes, are writen as push-overs dependend on their schemes and powerful allies to compensate their lack of strength. Vilgefortz is an all out menace: he has the strength to back up his arrogance and the brain to fabricate great ambitions. Truly a magnificent villain and the perfect opposite to the relatively "simple" Geralt who just wants to live, drink and fuck after killing monsters.
I also agree but one thing I like about the books is Vilgefortz uses absolutely no magic in the fight-other than creating the staff. He just plain outfights Geralt.
I loved how they portrayed Vilgefortz in the show. Despite the show writers other failings, this was well done. I’ve read all the books at least 4 times. I didn’t have any complaints about this fight. Vilgefortz eventually became a twisted and disfigured madman. But here, he was as he was intended to be

In the book, in the first battle of Velgifortz and Geralt, the use of magic is not directly mentioned, as it is done in the series. His combat past is also revealed. And Geralt is thinking about it. I think the author is either hinting that Velgifortz really had the skill to do this, or he wanted to intrigue readers.
I love how despite Vilgefortz easily handling the staff they ensure to show that it is indeed made of solid steel like at 2:23 and 2:54, or based on the sounds it makes. It explains how it can easily break even Geralt's bones who is more resilient than average humans. It shows Vilgefortz magically amplifies his strength and speed to be able to handle such a weapon.

Didnt read the books, but Some people told that Vilg is using magic to enhace himself. In the books Geralt had 4 opportunities as he saw holes in his defence before geralt could strike him down Vilgefortz Blocked in the last second always.
There is no direct reference in the book to the use of magic in the first fight with Geralt. Which looks even cooler. Since the thought is admitted that Welgefortz is so skillful that he may have defeated him without magic. At the same time, before that, Velgeforts himself talks about his past and says that he was a mercenary. Which puts a seed of doubt in your brain even more. The series has simplified everything. And showed the direct use of magic. So the scene loses its charm. Although given how frail and useless they showed the rest of the magicians. Probably someone will be impressed by the shown power of Welgefortz in this scene.

Depends entirely on the circumstance and the training of the wielder. On the battlefield, I'd rather have a two handed longsword or greatsword. In a one on one duel like this, the quarterstaff is an excellant defensive and offensive weapon. You can attack and defend with the whole staff, if you strike with the end it gives you longer reach than your opponent, and the blunt force could make it more effective against plate armour than a sword. The staff is also a two handed weapon, in group combat especially you really want a shield, so you couldn't use the staff.

In a straight 1v1 Geralt gets absolutely rocked by Vilgefortz (book spoilers ahead) in the books when he finally takes Vilgefortz down it takes Yennefer, Geralt, and Regis at the same time, and Regis fucking dies (well as much as a higher vampire can die, he could theoretically regenerate but it would take aeons so he is dead as far as the rest of the books are concerned)
It's just a dumb show decision, Vilgefortz was supposed to be the hero of Battle of Sodden. Which gave him enourmous prestige and political power in the magician world. He was relatively young, and very powerful. They wanted to make Yen the hero. So they completely misused Vilgefortz. They even gave Yennefer the famous Fourteenth of the Hill title, which belongs to Triss Merigold in the books
Geralt is the better swordsman and has much higher skill than Vilgefortz. If you watch carefully Geralt disarms Vilgefortz two times in the beginning of the fight. But Vilgefortz uses magic and brings back the staff. Vilgefortz also says you like my staff when Geralt catches it the first time. Then he does it again right after that. I just love the detail put into this fight.

I think you're understating how strong Geralt actually is, he is famous for a reason Yes it isn't really implicitly stated that Vilgefortz beat him only because of magic it could quite possibly be that he was just more skilled in melee combat than Geralt but I don't except that, I believe his staff was enchanted and will argue the information in the books lean more towards Vilgefortz using an enchanted staff to beat Geralt than it being just a pure skill difference but that's just my opinion

@@SEVNC3 That says absolutely nothing, in the book it has not been specified that he used magic, yes, he had a magic staff but he did not use any spell in combat, in fact Geralt is not as strong as people believe, Bonhart and Cahir were able to give him a lot of fighting, and they were both normal humans.
@@ThePalebloodHunter Geralt never fought Bonhart, and the only fight Geralt had with Cahir was a fistfight when he still had a bad knee and was off of his Elixirs.
There's a massive parallel between Early Geralt's fighting which was basically unbeatable with regards to 1 on 1 swordsmanship in the books compared to his fighting after the events on Thanedd when he was injured, I mean he beat the Michelet brothers, he beat the Professor & his gang, he beat Cicada, he slaughtered a whole commando of Scoia'tael, He killed Renfri and her crew, it's implied he would of slaughtered the Crinfrid Reavers too... all of these groups vastly outnumber him and are renouned for their skill with arms and Geralt beat them all with relative ease and to add to it Brehen the Cat of Iello even cowered down from him the minute Geralt was armed.
I think you're understating how strong Geralt actually is, he is famous for a reason
Yes it isn't really implicitly stated that Vilgefortz beat him only because of magic it could quite possibly be that he was just more skilled in melee combat than Geralt but I don't except that, I believe his staff was enchanted and will argue the information in the books lean more towards Vilgefortz using an enchanted staff to beat Geralt than it being just a pure skill difference but that's just my opinion
