I purchased this old mid-century buffet or partial hutch for $25. It had been painted yellow by the previous owner. In this video, I will remove the old paint with the carbide scraper, detailed scrapers, and dental tools. I enjoy sharing my furniture restoration journey, and whether it's a full restoration or just a refinishing, I trust you will enjoy what I have to share. Thank you for all your support. Barry

A great big thank you for the referral to Birch Living. I've wanted a new mattress for a long time, but couldn't find anything that match the quality of what I had. I am grateful because I need the support of a good mattress. Also,❤the added information at the end!!!

I watch both furniture restorations and furniture make-overs, and it's always funny to me to see made-over, painted pieces end up in the hands of restorers. You can usually tell which pieces have been painted by a pro vs. a bored houseparent/housespouse with a free weekend. Making it over (nicely) can be really time consuming, so every time I see what I think is a recently made-over piece, I imagine it's only been in one person's possession for a couple of years, so all the effort that went into a well-made-over piece is then undone (almost always rightly so) and the piece is restored to its natural state (or restored up, meaning looking better than it originally did). It's just another funny way to see part of the circle of life, and the cycle of life... The things we do with our life's time and how others experience that outcome, and then how they in turn have someone else's circle interact with theirs. As well as the physical things we cycle through in our lifetimes.

I love this piece and of course you refinished it to perfection. I have a vintage Duncan Fife dining room table and a Duncan Fife sofa that I inherited from my grandmother. This buffet looks like the same era…so maybe it’s a Duncan Fife style? In any case you definitely gave it back it’s dignity. Before it looked like it had been hit by a school bus.

You might find it interesting that, around 15:15, that inverted ''v'' shape at the base of the tree could well have been caused by a lightning strike many years ago. The movie was too easy, I got the wood right, and only saw the goat once. I love your little games.

If I hadn't watched you work on the project, I never would have thought that fantastic piece of walnut furniture was the same one. You created a magical piece! I found my spray-on stripper and think I will try to do some magic on a small cabinet: 20 inches x 24 inches x 4 inches deep. It may have been a medicine cabinet. Someone had painted it dirty white and then 'distressed' it by sanding the paint off with no rhythm or reason. I can see where the screws were for a door. I plan to paint it Chinese red for some of my rocks and mineral collection. (Retired science teacher!)

The buffet reminds me of much of the furniture we had inside military housing 40 years ago. It was old and the thick shellac coating was darkened. I wish I had been educated enough then to know what was underneath all of that dark shellac. It was tuff stuff and I imagine in larger cities anywhere near military bases it is still around. I have a Tiger oak dresser with mirror I rescued from my moms basement that was made by a furniture company in Seattle in the 1920’s. I love it and I love your channel. Beautiful work on the buffet and I appreciated the info at the end about tiger oak because in just the last couple of days I ran across a home tour video of a vintage home with oak trim and the host went on and on about how tiger oak is so special because "they don't make it anymore". Since there are still oak trees all over in the upper Midwest and there are a lot of independent sawmills I could not believe what she was saying. She was from the South, so perhaps it's a regional thing but in MN anyone can still get quarter sawn oak.
Anyway, thank you for freeing that buffet from a trendy paint treatment and truly restoring it to its intended timeless appeal :)

Loved the piece, loved the video. At the end, when you were describing what tiger oak was, I felt as if I were back in Botany class. Your videos are always interesting, educational and philosophical. Thank you.

My father introduced me to Bar Keeper’s Friend when I began collecting antique perfume bottles, some of which could be quite filmy from water or chemicals. Handy item to have around the house/shop!

Love it. The walnut is so much prettier than the mahogany that similar pieces (including some that I own) are made from.

    Excellent work!
First, the Hinges are Stanley Sweetheart marked, which dates them from
    1920-1935. .
Next, the wood is NOT Walnut. It is Cuban Mahogany. Very rare, and
now practically extinct. These types of beautiful Mahogany pieces are
the special targets of the Shabby Chic Bitches and their paintbrushes!
Thank you for saving this piece and restoring it to it's former glory.

Wish you could do my credenza that I inherited from my grandmother. It has a deeper cherry looking stain and similar hardware. Over my lifetime, many moves and my cats have not been kind to it. This was a vicarious thrill. 💜💜💜

Back when I was a teenager that type of finish was called “antiquing”. It is the equivalent (in my opinion) to chalk-painting; ill-advised! However, to each their own idea of beauty and up-scaling. Whatever keeps furniture out of landfills. ❤
