The coolest part of these is how achievable they all are. I personally keep mine on the fancy-ass, countless hours of work with thin glazes and volumetrics but I always come back to these videos. Juan's ability to replicate color is amazing and, honestly, a lot of combinations and techniques can always be reapplied to something else, plus his personality is great. Personally, I mostly stay away from Contrast because I find they don't dry very smoothly.
THAT ! That is what i consider " TMM " ! It's still real metallic colours , but there are variations in the tints , shadows and highlights and everything . Thanks for that tutorial :D
Another awesome video Juan. I might try your recipe for the gold as I'm still using Agrax and Reikland gloss mixes. I've found cutting Contrast with Pledge floor polish is like a gloss version of Contrast medium :D. Its a bit too glossy for most applications though so I often do a 50/50 mix of CM and Pledge for a more satin mixing medium ;). Beautiful work as always sir and I love the fact you are now working on AoS miniatures. I do enjoy a chunky Eternal scheme...perhaps you could do a few Stormcast Warhosts, Celestial Vindicators are crying out for some Juan loving :).

You can use those blues, but they are EXTREMELY desaturated, Kantor is ok as a basecoat but if you want an intense contrast using teals to highlight is the way to go as they have yellow in them, that's why they are the best blues

I just have two necrons in my desk right now.... As for varnish, for gaming I use Munitorium Spray and for display AK Interactive Ultra Matte over anything that's not metallic

I wonder how you would approach painting the white/cream tabards of those guys using these awesome techniques, as I've struggled to make them look nice and smooth. You make contrast paints and medium look like essential kit :)

Munitorium is satin, so it's a good compromise for all textures. I use Raphael 8404 yes, but lately my favourite Brushes are Rosemary and Co Series 33. Regarding Contrast Paints application I have a video on my Patreon with my process as my Patreons asked for it. That more or less answers the question about exclusive content, I have a few exclusive videos about subjects that I don't think make for good TH-cam videos, paint dilution, working with Contrast, model building, etc. That being said I plan to make a compilation video with all that for the channel once I have enough content. And sorry, but I have no interest in making a video about how I record my videos, sorry. I have no interest in that type of content but I am happy to answer any technical questions and provide pictures and that sort of thing in my Patreon Discord server. Thanks for watching!
Tried this method the other day, but struggled with getting a smooth layer on the pauldrons without getting it on the gold trim. Do you have any advice for how to approach this part of the model? Thanks for all your content, Juan!
This has been super useful for me as I paint up my SCE. I was wanting to invest a little bit more in the method, so wanted to go down the contrast route for my sequitors. Do you think it would work if I substituted Teclis Blue for the Alaitoc Blue as the base for the Leviadon/Talassar contrast layer, then use Teclis again for the first level of highlights? I guess it would work, but then I might need to use a higher ratio of Talassar blue when it comes to doing the contrast layer over cloaks, paudrons, etc. Thanks again for making this video - the results are just stunning.

Citadel without a doubt. It's my favourite brand and its the one I use 95% of the time. That being said, I have some Vallejo and it's slowly growing and I really like Scale75 metallics for Highlighting metals.

Es difícil saberlo, has visto el vídeo de cómo aplicar las Contrast bien? A veces es cuestión de técnica más que de la pintura en sí. Mira el vídeo y luego le dices. De todas formas siempre puedes añadir más medium para que fluya mejor en caso de que tengas dificultades

Tendrías que usar Reikland puro o quizás para acercarte más 1:1 de Reikland normal con Reikland Gloss. Pero aún así, Reikland no te va a dar un buen contraste, ese es mi principal problema con. Reikland, en las sombras se queda súper plano en vez de tener una buena profundidad e intensidad, por eso yo ya no lo uso más que para peanas y cosas asi.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures entiendo me hare con un bote entonces de guilliman flesh, me imagino que se puede aplicar con aerografo por toda la figura y luego y dar las luces que haces con silver-retributor igual con aero, me encanta el acagado del dorado.
Con aero lo que pasa es que te queda como un filtro uniforme, no como un lavado. No se va a acumular en las hendiduras ni en los huecos. Eso sí, si controlas la posición y la intensidad con el Aero, te puede quedar un resultado genial, pero si lo haces te recomiendo que con en pincel le insistas en las zonas de la sombra luego para aumentar el contraste y dejar los volúmenes más definidos

That depends on how thick the paint on them is. If it's thin you can re spray for sure but be careful and go light on it. If the paint is a bit thick then I recommend a quick stripping with Isopropanol
Where do you buy stuff from Any Manufacturer? I've been looking for their paints, and all I get in search results are mostly Vallejo, Citadel and Scale 75.
Any manufacturer means exactly that, ANY brand you can find. It doesn't matter what you buy, all will be the same or very similar, pick the one you like the most.
10:52 A happy little mistake. He's just showing us that stuff can be fixed and there is no need to despair, as there are worse colors than blue. Like Purple for example.
In the past, whenever I've tried to glaze over metallics with non metallics, it really mattes down the metal. Someone said to go over the matted down places with a gloss varnish, but it's uneven and you have to do the entire metallic area to ensure a uniform finish, which just turns it into a glossy model. Any tips?
Hey Juan, warning a question about blue 🙈. I'm following along to this and your Alaitoc blue looks so much lighter than mine. 🤔 Almost more like lothern blue. I'm guessing it's just how it appears on the video?
Trust the name, not the appearance on the video. Cameras and studio lights can distort the appearance of a colour. Alaitoc Blue is the right paint and Citadel is extremely consistent on their colours over different lots
Was this sprayed black or white before the retributor spray? I sprayed the retributor straight onto a blue plastic shadespire mini and my mini seems darker at the start

Not really. I have a video doing that on my Patreon, to me it's not worth releasing that on its own so I'm waiting till I have a series of those short tips videos to make a larger video to release on TH-cam. So it will be one at some point but not soon. If you REALLY want to see it it's on Patreon and the basic 2 dollar tier will open it, but I already tell you I don't think it's anything useful in there 😂, to me those videos are not useful but if you like them feel free to check it out. To be fair, the access (lifetime) to the amazing discord server is worth the money so I guess that video is a nice extra if you want to watch it. I never understood what people get from seeing the wet palette, specially sonce I don't do progressive mixing, I just load the brush and paint.
Sorry I don't mean to sound angry or disrespectful, but why? It's literally the same and I never repeat videos, sorry. If I paint one, it will be a different Stormhost and again, I'm just being honest and straightforward. Thanks for watching
Not different at all I'm afraid, this works very well up to "Dreadnought" sized minis in armour, not that I will ever paint something that big because I hate painting large models. Again, sorry if I came out as a bit of a dick there but I personally prefer to say things openly and not give you a cookie cutter answer that means nothing like: "Thanks for your suggestion, I will have it in mind for future videos" I personally appreciate honesty and give honesty back.

No, the spray is a primer itself. I know people say it isn't but for our purposes and specially in plastic, it is a primer.

It was dull, but as I say in the video i did a layer of the base paint over it to make it as bright as possible

Tried this method the other day, but struggled with getting a smooth layer on the pauldrons without getting it on the gold trim. Do you have any advice for how to approach this part of the model? Thanks for all your content, Juan!

This has been super useful for me as I paint up my SCE. I was wanting to invest a little bit more in the method, so wanted to go down the contrast route for my sequitors. Do you think it would work if I substituted Teclis Blue for the Alaitoc Blue as the base for the Leviadon/Talassar contrast layer, then use Teclis again for the first level of highlights? I guess it would work, but then I might need to use a higher ratio of Talassar blue when it comes to doing the contrast layer over cloaks, paudrons, etc. Thanks again for making this video - the results are just stunning.

Citadel without a doubt. It's my favourite brand and its the one I use 95% of the time.
That being said, I have some Vallejo and it's slowly growing and I really like Scale75 metallics for Highlighting metals.

Es difícil saberlo, has visto el vídeo de cómo aplicar las Contrast bien? A veces es cuestión de técnica más que de la pintura en sí.
Mira el vídeo y luego le dices. De todas formas siempre puedes añadir más medium para que fluya mejor en caso de que tengas dificultades

que guapo, se podria conseguir lo mismo con reikland shade y medium que con el guilliman y medium?
Tendrías que usar Reikland puro o quizás para acercarte más 1:1 de Reikland normal con Reikland Gloss.
Pero aún así, Reikland no te va a dar un buen contraste, ese es mi principal problema con. Reikland, en las sombras se queda súper plano en vez de tener una buena profundidad e intensidad, por eso yo ya no lo uso más que para peanas y cosas asi.

entiendo me hare con un bote entonces de guilliman flesh, me imagino que se puede aplicar con aerografo por toda la figura y luego y dar las luces que haces con silver-retributor igual con aero, me encanta el acagado del dorado.
Con aero lo que pasa es que te queda como un filtro uniforme, no como un lavado. No se va a acumular en las hendiduras ni en los huecos.
Eso sí, si controlas la posición y la intensidad con el Aero, te puede quedar un resultado genial, pero si lo haces te recomiendo que con en pincel le insistas en las zonas de la sombra luego para aumentar el contraste y dejar los volúmenes más definidos

That depends on how thick the paint on them is. If it's thin you can re spray for sure but be careful and go light on it.
If the paint is a bit thick then I recommend a quick stripping with Isopropanol

Where do you buy stuff from Any Manufacturer? I've been looking for their paints, and all I get in search results are mostly Vallejo, Citadel and Scale 75.
Any manufacturer means exactly that, ANY brand you can find.
It doesn't matter what you buy, all will be the same or very similar, pick the one you like the most.

What do you use to thin your metal paints when doing the stormhost+retributor glaze during 6:00?

In the past, whenever I've tried to glaze over metallics with non metallics, it really mattes down the metal. Someone said to go over the matted down places with a gloss varnish, but it's uneven and you have to do the entire metallic area to ensure a uniform finish, which just turns it into a glossy model. Any tips?
That's the beauty of Contra Paints for me, the finish over metallics is beautiful. I don't do any clear coats and it looks great

Hey Juan, warning a question about blue 🙈. I'm following along to this and your Alaitoc blue looks so much lighter than mine. 🤔 Almost more like lothern blue. I'm guessing it's just how it appears on the video?
Trust the name, not the appearance on the video. Cameras and studio lights can distort the appearance of a colour.
Alaitoc Blue is the right paint and Citadel is extremely consistent on their colours over different lots

Was this sprayed black or white before the retributor spray? I sprayed the retributor straight onto a blue plastic shadespire mini and my mini seems darker at the start
No, just over the bare plastic. Try and do a quick later with the Retributor base paint on top of the spray

Not really. I have a video doing that on my Patreon, to me it's not worth releasing that on its own so I'm waiting till I have a series of those short tips videos to make a larger video to release on TH-cam.
So it will be one at some point but not soon. If you REALLY want to see it it's on Patreon and the basic 2 dollar tier will open it, but I already tell you I don't think it's anything useful in there 😂, to me those videos are not useful but if you like them feel free to check it out.
To be fair, the access (lifetime) to the amazing discord server is worth the money so I guess that video is a nice extra if you want to watch it.
I never understood what people get from seeing the wet palette, specially sonce I don't do progressive mixing, I just load the brush and paint.

Not different at all I'm afraid, this works very well up to "Dreadnought" sized minis in armour, not that I will ever paint something that big because I hate painting large models.
Again, sorry if I came out as a bit of a dick there but I personally prefer to say things openly and not give you a cookie cutter answer that means nothing like:
"Thanks for your suggestion, I will have it in mind for future videos"
