Wow, Mass Effect is actually pretty modest compared to the other sci-fi franchises. Start Trek, Star Wars, and Halo all like to make their stuff BIG (especially Halo - freaking Forerunners). Mass Effect keeps it all rather small. I like that. It's refreshing.
Raving Rando they are small yes but if mass effect and halo went head to head in a fight, halo would destroy mass effect not because the ships are bigger, but because of just how much better the technology in halo is. plus with how much larger halo ships are they obviously house more weapons than mass effect ships do.
I think Warhammer 40k, Star Wars and Halo seem to set the standard that "bigger starship = better starship" when in reality it's the other way around when you talk about combat vessels. Because bigger mean it's can be easily detect, easy to hit, and costly to build while the armor and shield would offer worse protection than smaller ship due to Square Cube Law. Take Real Life Soviet T-54 and T-10 for example; T-54 is an MBT weighting 34 tons while T-10 is a Heavy Tank weighting 54 tons, but when it come to armor thickness T-54 has better armor than T-10! thanks to smaller profile and thus, area needed to armor. The only case where "bigger starship = better starship" apply is when you talk about interstellar passenger or cargo ship. As that reduce the cost of transport per number/weight of goods/passenger.

ME ship didn't have much impressive speed either. They rely on network of Mass Relay to go that fast, even the Reapers can only managed 30 light year per day without Relay from Canon source material (not sure if Reapers built it or it's the Leviathan, but consider that Citadel must be made by Leviathan... well...). Big size is overrated in Space Opera nowadays too when it's actually the smaller starship that's the better one, especially when it come to warship. After all, smaller mean it's much harder to detect on someone's sensor, much harder to hit, and the most important of all; cheaper to build and maintain (refuel, crews and otherwise). Take a comparison between Death Star from Star Wars and Andromeda Class Battleship from Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato for example; both are planet buster, but Andromeda is definitely the better one when it comes to *practical application* - for the amount of resource/manpower you needed to build and maintain one Death Star (160 km. spherical space station), you can build and maintain like what? thousands, if not ten thousands of Andromeda Class Battleship (it's a 400 meter length space warship, barely bigger than today's Nimitz Class Carrier)
In terms of planet busters that is a fairly fair assessment. What I was more talking about speed wise was actually Mess Effect ships sub-light speed (although point to point the relays are one of the fastest methods of FTl in science fiction: instantaneously transporting a craft across a whole galaxy. However I do agree that in terms of Drive Core technology for individual ships going within a system ME ships are a lot slower, including the reapers. However in terms of sub-light speed we can see a ME ship cross a solar system in a few minuets, and unlike other science fiction universes they do not need to leave the gravity well of a planet to operate (I say some of the bigger ones: but not all.) Still sub-light speed for ME does seem to be insanely fast (if only due to narrative oversight).
