Who cares if its not more power , just saying my beetle is supercharged is 100% COOL ,it looks great!

I installed a few of these back in the day. Under light cruising and idle there is little difference. You need to full throttle to feel a major difference.
Back in the day's this was cool! And yes Sir It still is... I like the original look! 👍🇧🇪

It seems like the better way! The linear nature of the supercharger seems to better mimic the normal flow of intake air throughout the RPM range, putting less momentary stress on the combustion chamber. A turbo seems (to me) to spool up at an exponential rate, pushing an efficient boost to rev ratio only at a certain RPM point in the power band.
Supercharging has always made more sense to me than turbo for the reasons you describe.

In all my years of owning many VW’s, I’ve had way more problems with 1600’s than I ever have with 36 and 40 horse motors. 36 was always the most reliable, ime.

Good job on the installation boys ! She's a very clean machine . A buddy gave me a Judson supercharger years ago for my bug , but I went for dual carbs , maybe I should find that beast 😂

Chris I have one of these rebuilt to brand new and powder coated complete with Gauge, bracket that bolts to steering column and oiling system from Fram interested? All packaged up in the Box. I was going to install it on my original 58 convertible but out here in Arizona it'll run hot and for the extra couple of horsepower I don't need it to be doing that. Thanks for doing the video I know what mine would look like and sound like now
In the near future, I will be restoring a 1960 beetle. I am keeping the 36 hp. engine. I already have acquired a Bosch 010 distributor and small diameter 12 volt generator (Bosch GR26X?). I would love to get my hands on one of these superchargers.
If I were adding a blower to my bug I'd want to feel the difference very noticeably. While it's got period-correct cool-factor, I'm betting an Okrasa-style upgrade would provide more noticeable performance gain. Add straight-cut gears and it would give a blower sound!

It will make a big difference pulling up a steep incline rather than more raw speed.
Yes I tested that out yesterday actually, held good at 65mph up a hill.
I had this same setup on VW woods buggy, not noticeably better than a stock 40 hp.

where did you get the belt tensioner setup? thats a slick upgrade. We can tell the car pulls nice in upper 3rd gear and 4th 65mph+ where the stock falls on its face. thanks for the ride along!
i think they had the Judson supercharger for the 40 horse motor too. Had u made any videos on the 1968 beetle and the changes and options for the model year. as 68 is the last year for the swingaxle rear suspension and early heater channels as 68 on was for the safety standards then.
Yes you are right! They had the judson for the 40hp as well. And yes, I need to do a video on the 68 as well. Stay tuned.

Chris, Nice work. I think you'll find the best boost in HP while in the upper RPM's say around 3K and beyond. I'm interested in what it'll be like on the parkway going up longer hills. What was Mr. S looking for when he was adjusting the MM oiler at the top of the vid? thanks

That is super cool! I remember hearing about the Judson supercharger back in the days when I was really into the bugs. Where did you find the supercharger? Didn't they also make these for the 40 horse too?

It boosts it a little, maybe 15-20% more, more on the higher gear. Great for hills.

@Chris Vallone one of the original Herbies, a 62 or 63 Ragtop Bug had a Judson Supercharger, it was the backup for the Porsche Engined Herbie. How fast would a 63 Bug go if it had a Judson Supercharger in it? The Judson Supercharger Herbie also exists

Yes evergreen metallic, a subaru color. It mimics Almond Green from the 50s VWs.

Its a period correct accessory, and a very cool one at that. And any power increase helps!
yeah lil power increase on highways.
Chris, do you bench run your motors before you put them in a car? Or do you build complete and fire up and break it in for the first time after it's installed?
Oh yes always! Bench test then 300-500 mile break in period once installed.

I dont think u get a big increase in power in a small engine like this but i think maybe 40-45hp but better than nothing and its one of the best engine ever and so simple and reliable engine👍
So sad that grandpa was shifting like an old man and we couldn't get real test on the supper charger...sad...wheel chair sad

Paul Oliver First start so probably no fuel in the float bowl. Mine takes about 20 seconds of cranking when it’s empty.
