    Hey Paul, thanks a lot for doing this video series for Gloomhaven. The manual is already really good, but reading it while watching your videos just make the whole learning experience a complete joy.

      Thanks. I find combination of rulebook and video is good. And yeah, 1st printing of GH was a pretty good rulebook, and the tweaks made for 2nd printing made it a lot better :)

    Hi Paul, I was really glad to hear some months ago that you'd be making the rules videos for Gloomhaven. Your concise presentation will surely help alleviate my rules book dread! I was also pleased to find out you were tasked with rewriting the Robinson Crusoe rules book from scratch, which makes it far more likely I'll invest in the updated edition of that game. These efforts are appreciated!

    • @GamingRulesVideos
      @GamingRulesVideos  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not quite. The "structure" of the new Robinson Crusoe rulebook was taken from the German version, translated into English and then given to me to edit. It still needed an awful lot of work though, and the German version did have some different rules in there which needed changing. But thanks for the appreciation :)

    Great videos (as always.) The one thing that seems to be missing from the rules is a succinct way to sort all the components to get started (without spoiling everything.) I think the information is there somewhere, but it's sort of spread out across the rules. For instance, I thought the attack modifier decks in the character envelopes were the starting attack modifier decks and was so confused why they were all different sizes. I know it says in the rules that the attack modifier cards with the class symbol are added later, but it didn't quite click. I needed your video to clarify that every character starts with the same 20 card attack modifier deck, so I went searching for them in the box and only then realized that the M is for monster, and the 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent the players. The rules are great and easy to read, but this much information is tough to organize for all readers. One of the many reasons your videos are so helpful. Thanks!

    Late to the game but very excited to start this quest. Had a question that I can’t find an answer to anywhere. If the monster stat card has a range of “-“ but the ability card has “range +X” is the range applied due to the ability or not applied because there was no range to begin with? TIA

    • @GamingRulesVideos
      @GamingRulesVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The range +X is not applied unless the enemy has a range stat. However, note that even sometimes, enemies without a range stat (guards) still can do a ranged attack. If you look through their attack modifier cards, you will see at one point, they do an attack with range 2. I think this represents them drawing a spare dagger and throwing it at you :)

    Question - when would you go back and add in the X cards? As you'd said to leave them out to start off with - are you able to freely switch cards around in your deck when not doing a scenario?

    • @GamingRulesVideos
      @GamingRulesVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for the delay. Your X cards are always available. Think of them as level 1 cards, but they are a little bit more complex and you should only start using them when you are comfortable with the rules.
      And yes, before a scenario, you can freely build your hand of cards from any that you have access to (which at level 1 is all your level 1 cards and your level X cards).
      Hope that helps.

    Can you talk a little about the rate of xp gain and leveling up? I think you mentioned on BGG that you were about five scenarios in and the characters were level 3. That surprised me a little. It looks from one of the character sheets that characters need to gain 95 xp to reach level 3. I've played the intro scenario, and it seemed like the person who gained the most xp only reached 10 or 12, so I wouldn't have expected any characters to reach level 3 after a handful of scenarios. Similarly, how likely do you think it is that characters will reach level 9 before retiring?

    • @GamingRulesVideos
      @GamingRulesVideos  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your first characters should definitely retire before reaching level 9. I estimate that my character will be level 6. We each gain around 15xp per scenario at the start, so it took us 3-4 scenarios to level up to level 2. Remember that you get a certain amount of xp for successfully completing the scenario, so our characters were generating 8-12 each and then a bonus of 6.
      Our Scoundrel seems to gain xp faster - she was level 3 after 5 scenarios. However, we are now 7 scenarios in, and all of us are now level 3!
      Progression of characters feels about right.

    When leveling up, you only choose one new card to add to your character abilities deck, yes? In the video you say you have access to all cards at your level or lower, but I could have sworn you only choose one new card to add.

    • @GamingRulesVideos
      @GamingRulesVideos  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are correct. When you hit level 2, you add one new card to your pool (chosen from the level 2 cards). And you can only take cards with you from your pool in each scenario.

    Hi great review, I have my copy on the way just wanted to ask about solo starting characters. I have played games before where is difficult to juggle multiple characters in solo gameplay. What would you recommend for solo play is it possible to play one character or am I a missing out by not using multiple?

    • @GamingRulesVideos
      @GamingRulesVideos  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. There is no actual solo mode in the game unless you count the solo scenarios, which I would definitely not start with. You need to play with a minimum of two characters, but you can play them both yourself if you want to. I'm not personally a fan of playing solo games, but I know many others who enjoy playing it this way. I'd advise not taking two "weak" characters together though. Maybe include the cragheart or brute at least.

    Hi Paul. Thank you for these videos! One question, do you have to write on the map and stick stickers? If so, how can this affect to Replayability? Thanks in advance!

    • @GamingRulesVideos
      @GamingRulesVideos  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, the replayability is an interesting thing. Put the campaign map aside for a minute. You have 95 scenarios, all of which are totally replayable with 2-4 characters of any level. Thats more replayability than any other game I've ever seen.
      Now... take the campaign... All the map does is to track which scenarios are unlocked. So, theoretically, once you have "finished" the campaign (which will take you about 200-300 hours of gameplay), and you did want to start again, you could just track which ones have been unlocked on a piece of paper in the same way.
      So yeah, its definitely replayable should you run out of content.

      Gaming Rules! Wow! Thank you! And what about stickers on cards? I've heard some stickers modify cards. Which cards? Abilities? Encounters?

    • @GamingRulesVideos
      @GamingRulesVideos  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The only cards which have stickers put on them are the ability cards. They are small stickers. There are a few options:
      a) dont worry about it. When a card gets a sticker, just keep the card improved forever. Even if you reset everything, just leave the cards stickered, they dont make a big difference.
      b) buy the "reusable sticker" pack available from a 3rd party
      c) sleeve the cards and put the sticker onto the sleeve itself

    Why cant just use tokens, instead of stickers? Now when im done with the campaign, i can throw it out the game? Arghhhhh........this legacy shit again.....i hate it.......damn. I wait it this game so much....now im not sure about it.

      The stickers on the map are not really a big deal, and you can easily just play again afterwards if you wanted by keeping note of which scenarios are unlocked. Tokens would be impractical as you'd need to keep putting them on the board each time - and you dont really need them - you look at the map to decide where to go, and then put hte map away and play the game.
      Also, the full campaign will take you probably a couple of hundred hours to play :)

      It would take quite some additional work, but what you could try is glueing a small magnet next to every spot on the map, then another magnet and a backing board to each sticker. Whether this works or not will depend on if the map is tough enough, and if not, consider getting it laminated.

      Yeah , thats what i had in mind to get laminated. But it can be done if the board is folding?

      Perhaps not.
      One thing that may possibly work, or might just fuck up the board completely (I don't know how it would react) could be to drill a set of holes into it to glue cylindrical magnets into, then they wouldn't be sticking out sticking out and keeping it from folding up fully. But that may be far too extreme a measure just for the sake of having removable stickers.

      I’m very sorry for being British. If I could do something about it, I would but I was born here, and live here.

      I have nothing against british people, this accent just drove me crazy. Nothing personal :)

      His accent threw you??? It is not thick. If that was hard for you to listen to, avoid people from Ireland, Scotland, Mississippi, Georgia, or Louisiana, cause they have THICK accents.
