One little detail was that if you draw a mod card that cancels your attack, any status effect from that attack will still take effect on the enemy. Great guide!
Wonderful starter guide. I kinda realized a lot of my channel's uploads kinda goes deep into the crunch without too many essential/early stuff. This video is super helpful for getting into such a wonderful game. Thanks!
I see this game at the top of the BGG boards, but it sounds so complicated. I'm looking forward to Jaws of the Lion later this year as an easier introduction.
Wow- that's a great job. I recommend viewing this video before trying the game and once again after your first session. You'll likely catch a few things that you missed.
This video was great for me as I have just got the game and maybe know 75ish percent of the rules so already had a fairly good handle on things. Maybe if you are 100% new add this to your list of videos after you have read the rules. It helped me, especially as it covered some of the rules that don’t come up so often such as poison etc.
Thank you SO much for this video. It was crazy difficult to play a first scenario since there’s no good “quick start guide” with this game. This video fixes that!
really helpful thank you! played a few scenarios a year ago and totally forgot how it worked. heading back for another round today and now I'm ready! Love this game.
I disagree with one of the first things he starts this video off with: the idea that you'll probably want a static group to play this with. I mean, we play out of a VERY loosely formed group of 8 depending highly on who can show up on a given night. The game dynamically scales based on the number and level of the present players, so there's really no reason at all to limit to a static group of 2, 3, or 4. We just do the quick math on the dungeon level and set up the scenario based on the correct number of players. Since I own the game and I"m always there, I quickly get everyone up to speed on the events that occurred in the world since last we met. We actually started a 2nd party in the same world and that has been interesting too. I think Gloomhaven works really well however you want to play -- the only catch is you can't have more than 1 copy of a single class playing in a single session so a couple of people are playing the same class at different times. But it hasnt' been a big deal and very fun and cool concept that works well.
Yeah, I cringed at this as well! GH is designed for boardgamers, who may not have the schedule or ability to commit to a regular campaign game, like you would with an RPG or some campaign boardgames (eg. Descent). It's a great design feature that finally notices that boardgamers have other things they have to do with their lives! :D
@@kjetildg Best thing to do is track the items you own on your character card and return the items to the store. It sucks, but is how we usually handle it.
spot on and allot of questions after our first game yesterday are solved, like the money that drops when you killed a enemy and the auto loot if you stop your movement at the end of your turn! thanks allot
GH is actually designed so that players can drop in and out of the game. Most other campaign games, including D&D, fizzle out because of player schedule conflicts. GH can also play with as few as two players. Many RPGs assume four or more players, and one has to be the DM. Many RPG sessions can be unentertaining with system, personality, or gaming style conflicts. Despite its popularity, GH is limited to Ameritrash gamers who are interested in hand management and tactics, which limits its audience, so players are all on the same page with expectations. I have some gaming friends who will try out a new boardgame, but they're impossible to play with on a regular schedule, so we can't play campaign games, including RPGs.
Ok, great, thanks so much. One question, though...what was step one again? Oh sweet baby Jesus, never will figure this out. Back to Catan...or solitaire.
Yeah I was thinking of getting this. As of 11/17/2020 the game is on sale on Amazon for 85 bucks. That's a nice price. Way too much going on in this game. Its easier to play an actual pencil and paper Role Playing Game
Breath any? Maybe you could slow it down for us "special" people..particularly when you reference information without highlighting it on the video. However I do appreciate the video.
This game looks bad ass and all but wouldn't it just be so much simpler to just play D&D or any fantasy RPG for that matter? I mean D&D has infinite content, whatever you think ok becomes a dungeon or an adventure. Even the most die hard Gloom Haven players with an equally dedicated game group will blow through the box of stuff then all you have is a 200 dollar box of fancy card board. That's just be but call me crazy I guess.
Some groups don't have a DM that could really make that experience come to life, or players that can get into the right mindset. I mean, anyone can try to DM or play DnD but I think it can be a bit intimidating for the uninitiated. Gloomhaven tells the story, gives you a dungeon and some mobs, creates a balanced tactical combat scenario, and dishes out loot. It's kinda like D&D on rails, and for us that's been a welcome relief after trying to get D&D off the ground a couple of times somewhat unsuccessfully. Maybe after our Gloomhaven campaign we'll have enough ideas to run a DnD campaign but for now this is giving us months of content and we're very happy with the purchase.
Most gamers like to mix things up and play a variety of games. Also, this is far more streamlined than playing a DnD campaign and you do not need a GM and a dozen rule books. Anyways....Pathfinder is superior. lol
My wife won't play D&D but wants to try Gloomhaven. She likes the appeal of playing bite-sized scenarios versus the extended gaming sessions of my D&D group (which for us tend more toward a 6-8 hour window). If I have to buy and learn a new game so that my wife will play some RPG with me and my son, that's fine by me.
This video is great for REFRESHING MEMORY. It is terrible for teaching beginners. Impossible to Learn to Play ANYTHING when the content is taught at 5x speed.
I need two people. One who can watch my kids all day everyday for the coming months and another to go to work for me.

there are some drawbacks though, e.g. the shop. Since items are owned by players, shop store is quite limited with many characters.

What an incredible game.
amazing review. quick and too the point, yet clear.
Using this for the PC version as I have never played. Thanks!
Have you guys ever played or talked about Kingdom Death on your channel ?
CANADIAN CONTAMINATION In what way does it look evil ?
CANADIAN CONTAMINATION Haha cool ! Yeah, the sexual horror elements entwined with satanic imagery is pretty evil too !
Great video, don't understand why people don't just play DnD. Has all of the fun of this and much much more.
James Molyneux Because it’s not in one neat package like this. You have to keep buying more and more of “booster packs” to keep up your game.

@@VedanthB9 Serious question, since when?? You just need a few books and a creative DM.
Jimmy 2 Shoes game is pretty much dnd and could be played that way in all reality.
Thanks for making such an efficient video! Fantastic overview!

Make Gloomhaven Great Again!
You’re wrong about monster movement, they will trigger traps if it means they can attack, their stupid that way. Unfortunately.

(: Well, there are the 2 hour videos teaching GH...!
nice video.
