  • It's time for a long overdue cottage garden tour. Now that we are in Autumn it's time to tidy away the summer plants in the polytunnel, and to get those Spring bulbs in the ground. Here is a look at my bulb planting process, and a walk around the garden. Things are a bit messy and honest this time around. Thanks for watching!

Im always surprised when people say they dont like autumn, as thats always been my own favourite season! Autumn is the coziest time of yeah! It brings cooler weather (yey, no more sweaty, humid, gross UK summer, lol), lit fireplaces and candles, cozy knitted hats and sweaters, lots of tea and hearty autumn foods, beautiful foliage colours, dark cozy evenings, and lots of free mulch once those leafs fall. :)

I’ve never bothered with the garden in autumn/winter I leave it all for tue bugs and wildlife to enjoy and come spring when the perennials and shrubs start to show new growth I cut back accordingly. Autumn is always about enjoying the leaf colours and a good chance to repair fences sheds greenhouses pathways etc.

Before I became a gardener fall was my favorite season, now it's taken me years to find beauty in the "mess" of fall. I tell myself fallen leaves are confetti and this time is something to celebrate. ❤ Sending peace to you in your garden.

I’m a gardener too, are you one for cutting back come autumn or prefer to leave perennials to die back and over winter and attack what’s left in spring? I’ve found a lot of my clients want a major clean up but I’ve managed over the years to convince them that leaving some areas to die back naturally will be good for wildlife and will do the soil some good. Regarding leaves I spend a lot of time leaf blowing and have even mowed over them to either create leaf mould or mulched around large shrubs. What a great job we have though 😊

Do you enjoy watching birds? I love the little winter birds that come in. I have several feeders outside my kitchen window. The LBBs (little brown birds - sparrows, finches and juncos) are my favorites, but i also have cardinals, titmice and wrens with occasional doves and jays.

I am feeling a bit overwhelmed as well as there is so much work to accomplish and clean up, then there are the bulbs to plant! The frustration is that I fractured and tore the ligament off my pinky on my right hand and have to be in a splint for 10 weeks. 😢. I realize I have to take things slow but yes, I’m feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. Trying to be positive.

Autumn has been my favourite season my whole life, but not anymore, I feel a little unsettles and weary this time as we have a ton of exterior reppair to our cottage with leaks and bad windows and chimney being cracked and tiles missing oh its a hand full, but the garden has been keeping me with one foot in front of the other and soothes the nerves. Since first seeing your crocus lawn I have started to enjoy spring, I never did before in fact spring was my worst season but now I have my own sea of crocus and daffodils, I never knew how magical it could be to garden.

This makes me feel emotional, totally relate to those feelings. Best of luck with your cottage repairs. We have been trying to fix a leaky roof here too and worrying it’s a bigger job than we anticipated. Really glad you find comfort in spring now ❤

    • @hollywood7702
      @hollywood7702 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Oh, thank you, the roof is a scary task, not exactly a DIY kind of project, and so costly too, I found myself up there amongst the tiles repairing the 'under' roof made from wood shavings that must be 200 years old, I do not recommend that@@monalogue I so hope yours wont be extensive and that you can breathe out come bad weather. Old homes are full of surprises . You wont even imagine what our cottage looked like last year, had it been anyone else but us I swear they would have asked for a bulldozer to come and nock it all down. Slowly slowly.

0:49 And thousands of subterrainian bulbs, patiently waiting for springtime to come! 0:55 I also do not like autumn. The only thing good that can be said about it is that it is a fruitful time of year. 1:08 Yes, with my 50 foot wide, by 300 foot long vegetable garden as densely planted as possible and my cottage flower garden, summer garned activity is like afire hose opened full blast, a torrent of things to keep up with all demanding attention at the same sime, and I can hundreds of quarts of vegetables and fruit per year. Impossible to keep up with everything.
2:00 Yes, here in Ohio, February and March are the months that ice storms occur causing branches to come crashing down and electric to go off for a week at a time.
10:50 , yes, today 6 tulip bulbs arrived that I paid $80 US dollars for because they are near impossible to find to buy. One variety is named Insulinde, the other is named The Lizard. They are both Victorian era tulips. I want basically 4 classes of tulips, I want old Victorians and parrots and what I call "Easter Egg" tulips which is a blend of Purple Prince, Candy Prince and Yellow Prince and they have the Easter Egg colors and shape and they do bloom at Easter time.

I am noticing the rambling rector is hanging off the plum tree a bit too much. It needs to be tied up to the tree a bit.
With such a lovely, but small garden could you not pick the caterpillars of the box shrubs? Have your tried Neem oil?
I know it will be a bit of a project, but perhaps your husband could help you create some simple chicken wire baskets to plant your Jerusalem artichokes in to keep the badgers from eating them.
Hope you are well. Noticed the bandage on your arm....

Great idea with the chicken wire! Thank you

I'm hoping that opening up the canopy with your tree trimming will give the R.Rector more light so it really takes off in the spring and I hope you get some blooms.
Apple harvest time is here, and I'm wondering what you do with all your apples. I don't know if you like apple butter or not, but I don't peel my apples. I just put my slices in a blender and then strain the juice through a cheese cloth and use the juice for making jelly or cider. All the pulp I put on the stove with a stick of butter, brown sugar, and spices on the lowest heat and give a stir every once in a while as it cooks for hours till it's nice and thick, then place in jars. It also freezes well.
