  • String of hearts, or chain of hearts, or ceropegia woodii, whatever you want to call them, are one of my FAVORITE plants. This video walks through the basic care that this houseplant requires.

    This is SUCH a fun plant to propagate!..ive had mine for about 8 months and I've already been able to propagate it 3 times using the butterfly method in moss and in soil and I've also tried wrapping a strand around the top of the pot. They've all been successful so far! However, for some reason, it took a while longer to get new growth when I just wrapped it around the top. Maybe because there was less humidity doing it that way? I had the other props in ziplocks

      I agree! So rewarding! That’s so interesting about the varied rooting time, humidity would definitely play a part in that I think

    Thanks for this. I’m a beginner houseplant parent and purchased my first String of Heart yesterday. It’s Easter weekend and did you know another name for the plant is the Rosary Vine (source Dr Hessayon’ Houseplant Expert).

    I have a tiny 1.5” pot of string of hearts! It’s strings are getting so long, but there are only 3 of them hahaha. So I’m definitely going to try some propagations soon!

      Mine started out as only 3-4 strands! I’ve slowly started propagating it and it’s been so fun

    Hello! I realize that I made it to this video a bit late, but I'm captivated by the pot you have your string of hearts in! Is it anything you can link or by an artisan you can link?! Thanks!!

    I love string of hearts too! It's so fun to propagate them. Mine is growing super fast but I noticed that it's growing sideways (curving up) and not straight down. Not sure what I can do to fix it?

    • @thepetiteplant
      @thepetiteplant  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s probably reaching toward the light! If the light source is to the side of the plant, then the vines will grow toward that. It’s not too big of a deal though cause as the vines get longer the weight will start straightening them out

  • @allisonkaren7968

    I just got a plant today and I’ve noticed that the previous care taker allowed it to tangle and grow kind of in a knot. I carefully detangled each vine and I noticed that each vine has a central root system that’s pretty large and has a “pea”, but further down the vine there’s mini root systems from it growing in a knot. I’m assuming it sprouted roots in several area on the vine on its own. My question is, if I want each vine to dangle and I want to hang my plant up to enjoy the vines, would each vine die if the mini roots that grew on the vines aren’t in soil?

    • @thepetiteplant
      @thepetiteplant  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! The plant needs some roots in the soil for sure, I don’t think the plant would necessarily die if every single pea wasn’t in the soil but it would be able to get much more nutrients and grow much healthier if they were all in the soil!

    Thank you for this info, I have a problem with mine, I’ve got 4 pots in original nursery pot. I’ve watered once since I’ve purchased them about 3 weeks ago from top and noticed they still look dry. Wrinkled and soft. So I am trying bottom watering as we speak and the pots are floating and not retaining the water, I’ve only had them in about 5 mins so far though. So I think the soil is just so dry that it’s not soaking it up! 🤷🏻‍♀️ how long should I let them sit to know they are getting enough water? Help! 😩

    • @thepetiteplant
      @thepetiteplant  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! Sounds pretty confusing haha. I can't tell you for sure if they're still thirsty or not because I can't see the soil for myself. But if the soil is completely dry (like even at the bottom of the pot) then I would water! And if you're bottom watering (which I recommend with string of hearts) then you can let the pot sit in water for quite a while! I've left some of my plants in water for an hour to let them really soak it up. The soil may have issues absorbing water for several reasons. Some of the most common are that the soil is just THAT severely dry, or the soil may be really compact. In that case, I would use a chopstick or toothpick to aerate the soil. If your plant doesn't perk up after being watered, check the roots cause it may mean they've rotted. Hope this helps!

    My SOH leaves are very small and curling,I don't know what is the reason for that-water or light.I have placed in a terracotta pot with good drainage 😬Can anyone know what might be the reason

    Hi!
    Question, when I propagate in water, how long does it usualy takes to grow roots and how long should I wait to put it back in the pot?
    My best friend moved away for 6 months and she left her string of hearts for me to take care, the first days I wasn't aware of it so the plant died a little. When I got it it was already much smaller and dry. This video is actually very helpful! I am working on her now and praying it will get healthy and big again.
    Thanks!!

    • @thepetiteplant
      @thepetiteplant  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! It really varies plant to plant and also depending on what conditions the plant is in. In my experience, when I water prop string of hearts it takes around 2-4 weeks to start throwing roots out. I typically wait until the roots are about an inch long before potting them into soil.

    Do you think they would excelle with grow lights? I get some light in my apartment but im thinking maybe grow lights could help?

    • @thepetiteplant
      @thepetiteplant  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes definitely! I would have the grow lights facing the top of the pot so it doesn’t go bare but it should work well! Also don’t put the lights too close to the plant but you probably already know that
