Ringneck Snake Bioactive Enclosure & Setup

  • Keeping ring-neck snakes is relatively simple. A ten gallon tank will be suffice for 1 to 3 of them. They can eat worms, small frogs, and more. However it is best to give them a naturalistic enclosure with healthy soil and plants, and get a 30 pack of red wigglers. Put all of the 30 worms in the tanks dirt and let them hunt for themselves for a month/months. You wont have to do anything besides misting the enclosure and filling the water bowl until the worms start running out (which will take a while), but make sure to monitor how many worms are in the tank by sifting through the soil on occasion. Make sure to have plenty of hides and burrowing room. They don't need UVB. It helps to have isopods or earwig bugs to help with cleanup.

2:47 I believe it was eating a Worm Snake right there.
Besides that, you have the best Ringneck setup I've seen. Proper lighting and heat, humidity, lots of natural plants and foliage, dirt, places for them to hide. Most kids will just throw some dirt and dry leaves in a old fish tank and call it an enclosure, but you've done this one right for sure! Plus a correct varied diet! Awesome to see, and beautiful little snakes!

Thanks so much for this vid! Just rescued a baby from my construction site last week & didn't have any clue about them. He's doing great now because of your vid & other info. Very active, eating, basking, burrowing, staring at me. Not too shy either. Lol Much appreciated.
So no heat pad needed or anything? I'm in Fla, & my place stays about 76-77 inside. His tank reads about 80 in the shade no lamp, no pad yet. Wanted a night viewing light tho.

I know this was posted a while ago but thank you so much for this video like oh my god!!! I just rescued a baby snake from my friend's AC and attempted to feed her in an enclosure with minimal hiding but she was too anxious to eat. This video is way more simplified yet informational than anything I have found online. I feel more confident in what to supply her with so thank you so so much, I really want to keep her since this is the first snake I would be raising besides my childhood cornsnake.

My daughter and I found one under our trash can and have kept it in a ten gallon tank with soil, moss and a bark piece for hiding. We’ve had Buttercup for a couple months now. ☺️ We just found another the yesterday under the same trash can and decided to name it Noodle and put it in the same tank. They’re basically the same size so I’m hoping they’ll be nice! They’re so cute and fun to watch. Noodle is still in hide mode of course but Buttercup is comfortable enough to slither all around the tank during the day.

Id say I had these snakes for about 5-6 months. Now I just have a kenyan sand boa from a reptile expo. I'm thinking of keeping ringnecks again though :)

when they are in an enclosure like this and they hunt food inside it on their own no they will be stressed when handled, because the most part they feel wild. but one time I had a setup where I only had one (the one in the video I had the longest) where it was a more simple tank. I didn't handle him too often but I did hand feed. it would follow my fingers when i came by the tank and associated me with food.

It still doesn’t ever get to you know like, slither around. Do a little jog or sprint. Because you know, you have it like a really nice and luxurious yet tiny prison, that feeds it a good variety of food I guess. Still, that can’t be healthy mentally or physically for the animal to stay in one spot. I don’t like putting birds in cages, or fish in tanks, or have any animal caged up for that matter.

this thread is ancient but it’s worth mentioning, in case you didn’t read the other questions, that he keeps for a while, releases, repeat.
i agree with the spirit of your comment but i’m not sure (literally, i haven’t made up my mind) if i agree. we find them in our house all the time and i just kept one. We have a property with creeks and forrest- the works.
we just created a smal enclosure for the night that has a decent replication of its exact environment. we caught some red salamanders and some tadpoles and little lizards, etc. we have different humidities, hiding spots, native plants. i know not everyone has these resources but because i do i am quite happy to keep the little guys until it doesn’t feel right or it isnt thriving. be it 2 weeks or 6 months if you learn about the animal and provide a truly adequate environment then why not?
he’s using earthworms because they are available and that’s the info provided on the internet. it’s easier for us to scoop up some tadpoles from our pond.
