  • Ring-Necked Snakes and Redbellied Snakes can look very similar. Both snakes share similar habitats and can often be found under rocks, logs and pieces of wood while herping for snakes and reptiles. Neither snake grows to be very large and are harmless animals. Both snakes have brightly colored bellies that can range from bright yellow to bright scarlet or red, depending on the species and region. There is one easy way to tell wether it's a Redbelly snake or a Ring-neck. The Ring-necked snake has a complete, full ring around it's neck at the base of it's head, while the Redbellied snake has a broken or incomplete ring around it's neck at the base of it's head. These reptiles are fun to find and are common snakes. #nature #animals #wildlife

Good comparison. Guess I never thought about rings being confused with other snakes, but that was me looking through the CO/AZ lens.

I just came across a ring neck snake and a queen snake the other day, they look so much alike besides the obvious ring.

They are actually venomous believe it or not, but they bite so rarely and their venom is so mild that they are still quite harmless.

I have caught lots of red bellied or ring necked snakes in the redwood forests above Santa Cruz. I’m not sure which ones.

If the ring is complete, it's a good sign it is a Ring neck. Must be amazing there!
